RE: NC State to fire Gottfired at end of season
Sorry to tell you, but last I checked NC State was still a member of the ACC, which automatically makes them a HELLUVA lot more relevant than UNCW is in the CAA. Anyone who thinks Keatts would say no if he was offered that job is smoking a LOT of crack!

RE: NC State to fire Gottfired at end of season
I hate to say this, but I agree with Mullet.

NC State has a great fan base, and huge potential to be back to their former glory. Before UNC and Duke were anything, NC State was "the" best basketball program in North Carolina. It may have been awhile, but just as everyone on these boards understands, a few winning seasons and you quickly forget about the terrible years.

People complain about their fan base, but you have to understand. They went from one of the greatest basketball programs in the country, then the corrupt NCAA with their BS allegations tarnishes the program and throws one of the greatest basketball coaches Jim Valvano under the bus. NC State still hasn't fully recovered.

The fake classes and countless violations that the NCAA has swept under the rug for their money printing machine UNC is laughable. You can't blame their fans for being pissed and hungry for basketball relevance again.

Conference affiliation alone doesn't do much if you're not making much of it. Just look at Brad Brownell at Clemson. He's been there 7 years and Keatts has as many NCAA Tournament appearances as he has.

NC State ran off Sendek after he had a really good run of success there, including 5 straight tournament appearances and a Sweet 16 run. Now they're running off Gottfried after he's reached 4 straight tournaments and had 2 Sweet 16 runs. The expectations there are absurd.

Basically, if Keatts were hired by NC State, he'd have to win some key games against UNC and Duke AND get to an Elite 8 to keep his job.

Keatts could go to NC State and make more money in four years there than he could in 16 years here. That is all......

That's true for a lot of places, and I don't think anyone is delusional enough to think he won't eventually go somewhere else.

But that doesn't mean he takes the first job that comes around and pays him. He's going to look for the right fit. If it's State, it's State, but let's stop acting like it's a foregone conclusion that he'll go there if they offer it to him. No one knows what he considers to be the "right job" for him.

I don't think you have to beat Duke and UNC or make the Elite 8 every year but you better be able to compete to keep the job at NCSU and that is how it should be. I think Keatts would be great for them but I think Miller is an even better fit. Really no debate about it being a job with a huge upside and big time pressure to win. I don't think Keatts will be the next coach there-no basis for that, just a hunch. UNCW should be flattered that someone from the ACC is considering Keatts as a coach, gotta be doing something right!
Not long ago UNCW was sending coaches out the door and paying them for years to not coach.

Miller is better prepared for State, and his personality is geared in the direction "don't tell me I can't do it". He is a tougher nut than his brother Sean, he could handle the mental aspect of the job. As opposed to being intimidated with the circumstances he absolutely would accept it as a challenge.
Unfortunately Keatts will likely be gone, where is the question.

We shouldn't be concerned about Keatts leaving as we should be about the coaching tree.

If you go back to the beginning, that was my whole point. UNCW was a stepping stone for Keatts and we all know it. So, yes, next in line is the key. However, the interest in Keatts THIS YEAR should put the "coaching tree" front and center for Jimmy.

This is a no brainer to me. We have got to bring in a Keatts style coach who has experience running our pressing defense and high tempo offense. Our recruits came here for it, we have players designed for it, we've been highly successful with it, and it's a proven philosophy for mid majors to compete at level beyond their talent.

No idea who it would be, only that the coach should continue down the path we're on.

RE: NC State to fire Gottfired at end of season
The idea that NCSU is a 'great' job is laughable, and why their coaching searches provide so much entertainment. Based on their history, are they historically a top 30 school? Yes, of course. But, it's painfully obvious to anyone outside of their fan base that they're not a prestigious job. In the last 12 years they been turned down by an unemployed coach, as well as the coaches at Texas, Memphis, West Virginia, LSU, VCU, and Wichita State. None of those schools are historically close to State, but it supports the opinion among coaches that the challenges exceed the opportunity. They are historically a top 30 program, ahead the University of San Francisco and trying to catch the University of Cincinnati.

Debbie can't even fire a coach with any semblance of professionalism, I'm not sure why anyone thinks she'll get this decision right. If it's not Archie, it's going to be another fun expedition in Raleigh.

Darrin Horn is an intriguing name to me. Runs a similar style, has had mid-major success, taking WKU to the S16. He failed at South Carolina, but wants to be a head coach again. He accepted a job with Shaka Smart this season, but I think he could be a great fit and a guy that's not looking for a stepping stone.

Sources say Archie Miller is likely to turn down the job, per a source cited in the latest ESPN article on Gottfried's potential firing.

That's another gut punch for the "NC State is a great coaching opportunity" crowd and NC State fans.

I'm just shocked he's not even using his high profile expectation to the job to angle for a better paycheck. That speaks volumes to a coach's desire to enter that circus in Raleigh.

IU, NCSU, Illinois and OSU are all likely to have vacancies this year. If you could pick between the four, Mullet/DoubleU, tell me you'd take the State job.

Very few coaches while under contract would state they're interested in another job. So I don't know that this changes anything.

However, I would still be surprised if he did take that job.

IU is the no brainer #1! followed by OSU, and the last two would be 3A, 3b

If OSU is Ohio State and no Oklahoma Sate, than to a guy currently working at Dayton, that job would have to be very appealing.

If Archie says no, all the more reason for concern at UNCW....

I assumed it was Ohio State...... Geographically, IU isn't a stretch either
