If Air Force goes to the AAC for football only
What conference would their olympic sports join?
Big Sky would make sense maybe Summit. I have seen plenty of mentions of them joining AAC for football. This thread is not about that so assume they are . Where does basketball go in this scenario?

West Coast Conference or Missouri Valley. I doubt WAC because of the academic profile of that conference.

Why this question out of the blue? Has there been some scuttlebutt?

What would make a good regional conference for Air Force would be...

Air Force
Arkansas State
Colorado State
Louisiana Lafayette
New Mexico
New Mexico State
North Texas
Rice
Texas State
UTSA
UTEP
Wichita State

RE: If Air Force goes to the AAC for football only
Why would they do that?

The Academies have a separate TV contract from their conferences with CBS. There is zero financial benefit. Their current schedule plays the four schools most important to them: Army, Navy, Wyoming, Colorado State. They would give up two of those. Their basketball would downgrade from playing in large arena basketball, and they would no longer be in a western conference for All Sports, and likely be in a conference with lower non-football distributions. I see no upside here.

Come on guys, drink your coffee before you post stuff like this.

Well a little bit with all the Mountain schools. But not as much as the Colorado schools (Wyoming is close to the border, like West Virginia is to Pittsburgh; the three schools, CSU, AF, Wyoming are collectively known as the front range). Hawaii is also important to the Academies with Pearl Harbor, so playing there every four years (rotation with west division) means every class gets a game on the Islands. San Diego is also an important stop, with the Marine corp base. As a mountain rivalry you can throw in New Mexico which is really part of the Colorado zone, not to mention recent arrivals Boise State and Utah State. Army and Navy are built in, no matter where they are. This is as close to a perfect home as they could ask for.

BYU and Utah left the MWC. BYU is more focused on the Utah rivalries (Utah, Utah State, and nearby Boise State), while Utah is pretty full with a P12 slate, USU and often a BYU game. So those AF games are pretty much dead.

Pretty good summary. AF has 2 CIC rivals in Army and Navy. 3 more "front range rivals" in Wyoming, Colorado St and New Mexico. And then Hawaii and San Diego St for military relationship reasons. New Mexico could go in this category as well (Kirtland AFB) if you took them out of the front range category. So AF has 6 yearly "must play game" rivals in all sports.
Army
Navy
Wyoming
CSU
UNM
SDSU/Hawaii on a rotation in football, yearly in most every thing else.
Air Force dropping its CIC and Front Range rivalries would be like ND dropping Navy, possible, but not likely IMHO.
Cheers!

They are in a conference with long time, close by rivals and although they struggle in most sports, they are respected in football and usually go to a bowl game. They do wrestle in the Big 12, but even there they have mountain school rivals like Wyoming with them in that sport. I think Utah Valley and Northern Colorado wrestle in the Big 12 too. Other MWC wrestling schools Boise and Fresno St are in the PAC.
Cheers!

They get mentioned as a logical AAC add usually with either BYU or CSU or both. It's always assumed they would be football only. I was just curious where their basketball team would go. Summit as Denver's travel partner maybe.

Hard to picture Air Force in the Slummit, but Denver is there. Denver is a great school. Where do Air Force and Denver play hockey?
Cheers!

You should follow your own advice. If Air Force joined the AAC, they would be in the conference with Navy. And perhaps Army would join as well. So in that case even if they kept CSU and Wyoming, they would still have the same flexibility as now. And I don't think they would keep Wyoming. They aren't important to the school's mission.

And if they were in the AAC, they would likely be in a division with Tulsa, SMU and Tulane, 3 private schools, instead of being with a bunch of state schools.

AFA will play Army and Navy in football every year regardless of who is in which conference.

Playing Tulsa, SMU, and Tulane would not appeal to the AFA and its supporters as much as CSU, Wyoming, and UNM. Not to mention that, for other sports, playing Dakota teams, Oral Roberts, and Western Illinois would hold far less appeal than playing their MWC conference mates.

AFA is obviously on the wish list of AAC fans, but the move would benefit only the AAC and not AFA.

RE: If Air Force goes to the AAC for football only
The Summit is the only 100% logical place for Air Forces Olympic sports. They would finally have a chance to compete for conference titles and would be a perfect travel partner with Denver. AF has been to 4 NCAA men's tournaments and has not won a game despite coming close several times. The women have been twice, with the last being in the 90's. The last time their baseball team made it to the post season was the 60's. None of those things scream WCC or MVC. They are in the Big XII for Wrestling with NDSU and SDSU, and play Hockey as does Omaha, Denver, and UND in the Summit. As far as athletes go, it is what it is, they have weight and size restrictions and for the most part recruit a different style and caliber of athlete. They would do well in the Summit and it would be good for all schools involved.

With that said, they don't go to the AAC without the top of the MWC coming along. (Boise, CSU, etc)
