I think Nordstrom's and Neiman-Marcus will stop carrying the team apparel of some of the also-rans from low-population states in the Little House on the Prairie Conference, and their staunchest and most vocal supporters will tweet that it isn't fair.

I could see the CAA/MVC, etc...raise their profile in FB to compete with the MAC/SunBelt/CUSA type programs in that subdivision. March Madness is a cash cow and will continued to get milked. The smart folks deciding things realize they can maintain the underdog matchups to keep up to 200 schools eligible. The leftovers downgrade with a twist talked above below.

I hate to say it but those programs in the CAA/MVC FB that fans on here think have a right to the FBS as much as any MAC school are not going to see a shakeup in their favor.

There are DII conferences with D1 basketball facilities stuck at the DII. That is just the way it is.

Where we are at with 350 Division 1 teams a split does seem to make some sense. The way its going to happen is all D1 conferences in the new D1 will be required to have FBS football.

West Coast, Big East, Missouri Valley and Atlantic 10 will have to bulk up as hybrids, pulling teams in from the MWC, AAC, MAC and CUSA.

For the Big East it would likely mean UConn, Temple, UC, Memphis, Houston, SMU, USF, UCF, Navy, Buffalo joining the conference. The AAC would be out of business most likely.

For the West Coast it would be BYU who is already there plus SDSU, UNLV, Hawaii, Boise, Air Force, Colorado State, New Mexico. The MWC hangs in with NMSU, UTEP and Montana, Montana State, Idaho, North Dakota St upgrading for 10 teams total.

Missouri Valley adds NIU, Ball St, WMU, CMU, Toledo, Miami, Kent State and Ohio to grow to 18 in hoops.

Atlantic 10 has UMass already. They add Army, Akron, Marshall, ODU, Charlotte, App State, Georgia State, FIU.

CUSA down to 9 adds Tulsa, Tulane, Texas State to get back to 12.

SBC down to 7 in FB adds JMU, EMU and Bowling Green with UMKC joining for basketball.

The result is a 12 conference FBS Division 1.

Atlantic 10 (20)
Big East (20)
West Coast (18)
Missouri Valley (18)
ACC (15)
SEC (14)
B1G (14)
CUSA (12)
SBC (12)
PAC (12)
B12 (10)
MWC (10)

That's 175 Division 1 teams, 12 conferences and pretty much all you need. Take the NCAA tournament back to 64 and with the NIT at 32 there is going to be more room for everybody.

MWC and SBC will be the "starter" conferences with the WCC, MVC and A10 being more desirable.

BE will be an outright power conference again with a return of the FB schools.

If AAC teams think they are too good to rejoin the Big East I am sure there are a few MAC schools waiting to take those spots.

Or more correctly, if AAC schools find a spot in the B12 or ACC first.

The Big East is a great conference. I'm happy to be an affiliate member in Women's LAX and Field Hockey, but full membership simply doesn't work if you want to continue playing FBS football.

My point is the Big East may have to add football to stay in the game.

If so it would be a better basketball conference than the AAC, in fact one of the very best in the country.

Any conference on the brink just needs to add Trump U to the lineup.

I have a feeling that the NEC, America East, and MAAC will become mostly two conferences with some members joining the CAA or Patriot League and Robert Morris probably going to the Horizon League or OVC.

Not predicting it will die, but CUSA is in turmoil. Nobody likes the alignment of schools. Everyone is reeling from the financial hit from the new TV contract thanks in part to Britton Banowsky's strategy of taking schools based on market size rather than quality of program. Everybody is looking for a way out.

This won't be the final shift...it never is...a few schools will continue to upgrade/downgrade...however the money required to enter or stay at the highest level will be enormous. Eventually this will cause 3 options: The largest 20-40 schools just form a mega league and declare independence, the top 80 schools put in rules to control wasteful spending and create more parity, or finally the country becomes appalled at the continued large amount of injuries and demands a radical shift in rules to make the game safer for all. The second and third options actually could create opportunity for those previously left out.

The wild card is the right for players at private schools to have protections as employees. It is unclear how this will proceed. The largest/richest private schools should be okay...but I wonder about the smaller ones.

My own feeling are I like diversity of sports teams and would stop watching college football if it became a mini NFL with only 20-40 schools. On the basketball side...I think cutting D-1 from 350 or so schools to around 150-200 would be okay. However, I like the idea of the option of 4 lower out of division wild cards the opportunity to get an invitation into the first weekend to play a 10-12 seed. That would still introduce us to teams like SF Austin, FGCU, etc...that are doing something special at a sub-division.

Pretty much what I think, too. Agree with all of it, especially the part in bold.

For the P5/4 conferences to have 80 members, means that 15 programs will have been promoted from G5 to P5/4. ESPN/Fox stared-down The Big 12 for making plans to promote only two schools to P status. They will never allow 15. They simply won't pay P-class money for media rights they are currently getting for peanuts.

If the new football coaching hires at FIU and FAU are quickly successful, I think much of that eastern dissent will subside. Western programs are generally ok, recognizing neither the MWC or AAC have vacancies. Many are willing to let Old Dominion, UT San Antonio, and Charlotte develop. ODU and UTSA still look like rock star additions.

That's the best point in this entire thread. Lol
