Even if it's ever so slightly and guarded for now.

I know the QB thing is a big negative. But it's the hardest thing in sports to get right. How long have the bears been trying?

As stated before, I think the young coordinators along with all the former players on the staff who really have a vested interest in making NIU better is helping immensely. They can sell the program better than anyone, they went here and they won BIG here.

+1. It will be really telling if Lynch is able to land that 4 Star LB from Mt Carmel. I think Lynch and Rice are making a huge impact, especially with the kids in the city

Definitely the biggest reason I'd bet. But if we are going to hammer Carey for every misstep, getting these guys on board has to go through him in some manner, so he should get credit for knowing this could be a big asset to building the future.

Many of last years class and the current commits say they like the family atmosphere and the coaches are great. Now I know some of that is recruit speak, but at some level it has authenticity so even with all the bashing Carey gets he and the staff are connecting with recruits.

Exactly, if we are going to crap on Carey for the bad things, we have to give him props when he does good. So far, so good on the recruiting class. LOTS of time before signing day obviously, but he's being aggressive and the staff he's put together has huge upside.

I agree completely. I stated this before on another thread. Don't have to look at ratings if you watch these kids' highlights they can all ball.

There appears to be more urgency on all ends and you have to credit Carey. This was apparent with the signing of last years class.

Might take a bit more time but I think the program is on a definite upswing.

A very different vibe this year is apparent. Like everyone I've been very frustrated with the direction of the team. However, it does seem that Carey is showing more creativity and a willingness to change in order to make the team successful. Of course this needs to occur on the field where it matters the most. I for one want to see Carey succeed because it means our program is successful.

Yea we need to sign him just for the name. Is he related to Darren Sproles?

Article on Doke's commitment. Looks like if Iowa or MSU end up offering, odds are that he's gone

Haha, you have to admire his candor. There's no way this kid sticks. But it does point to the caliber of player we're recruiting. A couple of years ago WMU had 8 or 9 guys decommit and still ended up with the best class in the MAC so I'll take that.

NIU with another commit from Florida. Like Doke though, making it very clear he's still open to other schools. Just noticed he's a teammate of Parker's now, transferred for senior year

I am loving this strategy to be honest. Let them commit and wait on P5 offers, fine with me. All it does is hype our class more, which other recruits will see.

Yes, I like the approach too. Will some decommit, perhaps but that happens for all programs. This builds strength in the program and shows that spots are filling up so waiting to commit may not be the decision.

The dichotomy of his statement though is to "respect his decision," which can be construed as, don't call me I'm committed, among other interpretations.

I love how they say commitment, but then basically disregard being committed by saying they are open to other offers. Nonetheless it's good we are after these types of players and they see us as being a good option.

+1. I do like that NIU is going after these guys, but I struggle with the word commitment. It is like they try to guarantee a spot at a certain level as a safe guard, but are still going after better offers. I just hope we don't lose a bunch of these guys right before signing day. But I do like the direction!!
