RE: 2017 FB Roster Notes
Just checked the stats for 2005. That team outscored its opponents by an average of 35 to 15. Its 4 losses were by 6,4,3,and 3 points. Agonizing.
Especially painful were the losses to Coastal Carolina on a miracle catch and to UMass in the infamous Mud swamp game.

To me it felt like he 2004 team won the National Title as an underdog and the 2005 team failed as a favorite. That is why they play the games and that is why we watch. You never know

With Moloney being brought in I doubt we redshirt CoJo. CoJo has the ability to do some Carson Wentzesque things with the offense. He just needs to use all his punches at Ehall and pack on the pounds. But I believe Moloney might break the record books for JMU.

Thanks for the info. Sorry to hear that and I hope for a full recovery.

I'm surprised about Brooks. I thought he was the more talented of the Brooks/Tutt combo, guess things didn't pan out.

Goes to show you can't rely on recruiting hype. I hope it's not the case but Moloney may not pan out any better than Mitch did. It's worth Johnson burning his red shirt next year if he can develop further as an insurance policy. God forbid Schor goes down but it's better to have a groomed Johnson (so to speak) for the rest of the season than a QB3 in there.

This. I don't Think Gage is coming to JMU to sit for 3 seasons. Either Cole or Gage will be disappointed in 2018 and likely transfers.

Well if CoJo doesn't RS then Gage will only have to wait two active seasons. I mean I would feel it would be hard to leave a perennial FB powerhouse for a lesser FCS team instead of waiting to start as a RSJR year with a likely stocked offense. Only if MH leaves do I see him getting cold feet. Now the question I have is "how does he respond to incoming competition next year?"

A lot of guys are willing to wait behind seniority but get sensitive when the coaching staff keeps bringing in new talent at the QB position.

It makes more sense to redshirt Cole if possible. If Cole is the better QB then I'd want 3 years of him. If Moloney is better then he will win the job.

This article from earlier this week discussing blue chip QB transfers seems relevant. We were the beneficiary of 1 such transfer. Although we don't land any top 100 players out of HS, the QBs we are recruiting are blue chip for our level.

One of our all time greats, Rodney Landers, saw virtually zero playing time for three seasons, waiting patiently to become the star of the show for his final two years. He red-shirted his freshman year, played a little RB (very little) year two and three. Then years four and five he became our Superman.

Year's 2-3 (2005-2006) I wouldn't say virtually zero playing time, as Landers at least played in the majority of games. His stats were nearly identical those 2 seasons:
2005: Played 8 games, 25 carries, 5-7 passing.
2006: Played 8 games, 24 carries, 4-6 passing.

We've had A LOT of hyped HS QBs come in over the last decade+, and the majority haven't even panned out at QB (either moved to another positions and/or left the team after a season or 2). We have no idea whether or not there will be much of a QB battle in 2018.

That was 10 years ago. As that Fox article noted, blue chip QBs are no longer willing to sit for multiple seasons before playing. They all want to start from day one and if they don't get it, will transfer. Gage had FBS offers. So if he doesn't win the job in 2018, he can pull a Birdsong and transfer to an FBS program, sit out another year, and be starting in year 3 of his college career. Now we have no idea if he is actually that good but based on the offers he received and his high school coaching, he seems to be pretty solid.

Assuming Cole Johnson fills out his frame and gets another year or two under his belt in this system, he is going to be a very legitimate national player of the year candidate and NFL draft prospect.

Just put the best QB out there. That's all I ask.
What was frustrating about the dudzik/Thorpe years is that dudzik was clearly better than Thorpe but Mickey insisted on starting Thorpe.

Thorpe was great against inferior talent. Those big games against inferior talent influenced MM. He went all in on Thorpe and that decision cost him his job.

100% agree. Had he waited until JT was a RJ, I think we may have had something.

Great athlete. In games where he could out athlete the opposing defense, he shined. When he had to use his QB skills, then he struggled. He was strongest when the play broke down and he could scramble. His feet were more lethal than his arm and his brain.

Brian is shifty and has more speed then he is probably given credit for having but he did most of his big play damage with his arm and good decision making.

Thorpe was one of the fastest if not the fastest guy on the field most games.

I heard this a lot, but it seems to me everytime Thorpe appeared to have a lot of field in front of him, some defensive player would catch him or force him out of bounds. I was always expecting to see his explosive speed, but never saw it. Just my opinion.
