RE: Game Week: Kent and @NIU
You just named three of the best and most productive players our school has ever had. If Mike Talley was as good of a player as Earl Boykins or Lorenzo Neely, we wouldn't be having this discussion, and Talley would likely be in the NBA.

I think Bond has plenty of leadership skills, and leads by example on the defensive end. But he's not nearly as dynamic of a scorer/playmaker as Earl. No one is even close in the MAC right now.

Agree.

My point is that great teams typically have great leaders. Although this year's team is very talented, I do not see a great leader (perhaps Bond). JT4 and Raven Lee in my mind are All-MAC talent but not great leaders (Tech fouls, Suspensions, dog house, etc)

How about him starting LWH again in the second half and pulling him for Nobles before the 19 minute mark? What the hell is the point of that for anyone?

Steele's just looked like a hard foul. Last night I think the refs got a little too quick with the whistle and that every MAC ref has placed a target on JT4s back so that everytime he opens his mouth its a T. Unfair

Have seen JT4 multiple times and he plays an old-school game inside with a lot of chippiness ... in the past refs would let this go if both players were doing the same ... but this day and age it's all about the 'stretch 4' which is code for finess... which is code for 'don't touch me ...

After almost two years JT4 should have figured this out by now ... certainly the staff ... and it is particularly pronounced now that he is playing the 4 instead of the 5 ...

it's how the NCAA wants the game played and the officials to call it right now ...

JT4 brings attention to himself by not adjusting ... and it hurts the team ... witness Steele's last foul ... don't know if it was or wasn't flagrant ... but by that point in an over 50-whistle game ... it was 'flagrant' in the sense the refs were fed up.

Gotta learn the game.

I saw it . It was flagrantl he brought the arm down from straight up to an almost 90 % angle. 07-coffee3

I never understand why Murphy does quirky s**t like that. It didn't really "work" in the Miami game, but we won anyway, so he went with it again last night. I can almost guarantee you that Nobles (or Lee, or Mangum) will be starting Friday.

I am sure Murphy is feeling the hot seat. With his returning talent the MAC tabbed EMU to win the West and currently we are 13-9. What's our record against D1 this year?

RE: Game Week: Kent and @NIU
Seems like everyone is frustrated too. As the nature of sports go, usually coaches are unfairly or at least disproportionately criticized. But I think everyone is being pretty fair with Murphy here in saying roughly "not a bad coach, but is this it?"

My take on it is that Murphy will get a 2 year extension if things continue like this for the remainder of the season (this is last on current contract. I believe.) Next year will be his hotseat year. He has coached EMU to between 100-150 weighted computer rankings each of the last 4 years. Put into scale for a mid-major program, being consistently in the top half of D1 is success and will prevent him from being dismissed. But since EMU did not contend or make any noise in the conference during that period, you can't justify awarding a full 5 year renewal.

I think Murphy is good coach and has shown versitilty with recruiting methods to maximize recruiting. His downfall seems to be that he is a "systems" coach. Successful mid-major coaches will fit their system to the players he has available. They just don't have the recruiting power to do it the other way around.

Murphy has a talented team and a good system. But they don't fit well enough. Instead of adapting the system, Murphy just plays around with rotations trying to get his static system to work (or over-punishes trying to get improved execution out of his expectations. No one more than Ray Lee).

Anyway, lots of season left to make a run and prove me wrong. GO EMU!!!

Murphy is a good overall recruiter and average coach at best. He doesn't have a good system which is why they're so inconsistent.

According to my sources, Murphy's on the hot seat this season and deservedly so. It's his 6th season and he's made EMU competitive in the division but not close to showing anybody he has what it takes to win the conference. I believe 6 years was enough for EMU to evaluate him.

Ramy, if what you are thinking is true, he'd have his contact extension already to help with recruiting.

I believe the only way to save his job is to get to the MAC finals.

I have no sources as you do, just my speculation. Just can't imagine someone can bring a program to this level (esp from where he started) and they are on the hotseat of an original contract. But your logic makes sense about renewing before the end of the season to avoid hindering recruiting. So I will go along with you on this.

But my other point is that his system is probably good, you just can't run a strict system at a mid-major (can't get the right players). That is why you get the inconsistent results. I think we disagree on this.

Not sure why you are complaining so much. I see one trend in everyone's responses. We are decent, we have been decent and if Muprh stays we will still be decent. Now how do we get to the next level and be good or great? I think what most think is that Murphy is not going to cut it. I don't think anyone is saying that these guys are terrible. They are just... ok.

I've said exactly that multiple times in this thread. You must've missed it. Again, for the third time, it's a shame that we don't get as much (or any...look at the Miami thread in a game we dominated) discussion after a win as we do after a loss. If people can harp on Murphy and the team after we lose, then surely they can talk about how strong we looked in a win, yeah? Complaining is just easier than complimenting, unfortunately.

I think we have more talks after losses because we know how good this team is. We don't need to restate after wins that JT is a monster and Willie got hot and Ray was feeling it. We always compliment surprise performances from Steele or Nobles but losses point out your weaknesses and show us where to improve. Those are conversation points. Unfortunately, losses highlight Murphy's shortcomings. They make us wonder and discuss if he is our guy.

Regarding your question " They make us wonder and discuss if he is our guy."

After 6 seasons everyone on this board including the Ad knows this answer. Even Murphy understands which is why he's more animated on the sidelines. Just like English knew Boone knew and Ramsey knew.

It's a big gamble when hiring coaches with highschool experience and P5 assistant experience.

However, we probably win tomorrow.

Go EMU!

As we complain that we lose games we shouldn't, Ball State took it on the chin from Buffalo.

Call it parity, mediocrity, etc. the MAC is a big mess (except for Akron).

EDIT: NIU is a 1 point favorite today. The winner ties for second behind Akron at 6 - 4.

I don't think we win this one. NIU has been solid at home, and they always bring out the worst in us. Granted, we seem to bring the worst out of them too, but I'm just not confident enough in us right now to see a win on the road against a solid team.

The only games i think we shouldn't lose are home games. All home games are must win games. Don't win home games you don't win the fan base you need to win road and tournament games.07-coffee3

RE: Game Week: Kent and @NIU
With all the talk of coaching hot seats, N Illinois' Mark Montgomery must be feeling it too. He was hired the same year as Murphy, and has brought N Illinois up to mediocrity. Which got him an extension through the 2017-18 season. His program's climb to mediocrity has been slower than Murphy's, so the expectations bar has not been raised for long. But if N Illinois continues to play at this mid-range level, I bet Montgomery will be on the hotseat next year. In someways it seems unfair to these coaches.

I think Murphy deserves an extension, and hopefully he uses that to reconsider his system to minimize the flaws and maximize the strengths. I'd hate to start all over again.

Go EMU!!!

Watching Akron @ Ohio:

Ohio wins a game which seems almost like a game we'd expect to see us in.

Akron got three Ts - two on Big Dog. Big Dog got into foul trouble and missed a lot of the 2nd half while the game was anyone's game.

I'm ready for a foul fest next Friday. Maybe a bookie can give us an Ov/Un line for Ts (combined) on Big Dog + JT4.

Bout time. Aaron is 100000% right. One of Mangum or Lee needs to be on the court at the start of the game.
