UTEP will always have the advantages that the vast majority of G5 schools wish they have: a solid fan support, no P5 schools and pro teams nearby, a near monopoly in coverage in the El Paso media, the backing of the El Paso business community and the entire town as well. UTEP's issues are internal not external (hint: a complacent AD) but the foundation is there for a new AD to take it to the next level. UTEP could be in the MWC and the record in both FB and BB would be the same or worse. Conference affiliation helps in many ways but as Boise State proved in the WAC and Gonzaga in the WCC, a weak conference and geography can't keep you from achieving success. As much as we complain about C-USA, we just need to look at our neighbor 45 miles away to see that we're thankful that at least we have a conference to call home.

Ok. My guy doesn't like the AD at all. He also thought that UTEP would get a baseball program started when you guys got the new triple A stadium going. I'll admit, I don't know much about that. He loves baseball. I've been to the Sun Bowl and like it a lot. I'm also quite fond of UTEP's basketball history Haskins, the NCAA championship and the Hardaway "UTEP two step". I'm very familiar with Tim Floyd and his teams at Iowa St. I figured he'd help take UTEP back to past glory. I agree that UTEP has an advantage of being in a nice market with no other competition. It's only been recently that I heard of attendence issues in both football and basketball (which was never the case before now) and the internal struggles/frustrations. You guys know more about the state of your program than me obviously. Sorry if you think I was being disrespectful to a former conference mate. That wasn't my intention.
Cheers!

You're good, you were not being disrespectful at all. Your friend shares the same frustration as most of us: it is time for a new AD. He keeps coaches who would be canned anywhere else with Mike Price and Tim Floyd being two good examples of that. As for baseball, that's a sport UTEP would be good at. El Paso has tons of high school baseball talent but they have to leave town if they want to get a baseball scholarship at a 4 year university. Like you stated, there's a new AAA ballpark in downtown and a new basketball arena will be built a few blocks away. That's two venues where UTEP can start its baseball program and attract big name schools for OOC basketball games.

Getting back to topic, I don't see any FBS school voluntarily dropping to FCS or football at all. Even UAB is bringing it back after a 3 year hiatus and NMSU and UMass are giving independence a chance.

They complain that they weren't asked to join MWC. They work feverishly to get back there. When they were finally approached, they rebuffed, considering the CUSA an equal. They come forward again, with Rice, and are turned away.

I don't know if shuttering is in their future, but that's a rocky path they've taken...and this information doesn't help frame them any better.

Quote:I'm not seeing how Kent State drops it. Kent State is close to fully endowing all of their athletic scholarships, and has 10K enrollment in their 7 regional branch campuses on top of their 30K at the main campus, so it doesn't seem like it is going to be "force to" drop it if it doesn't want to, and without a compelling BBall conference upgrade on offer, it doesn't seem like it will want to.

That's a good funding strategy. To me, in some of these states, the mission and funding structure for some of these schools are likely to be hit pretty hard over the upcoming years. For schools with deeper pockets and sturdy funding lines, operations will continue as normal, but those others...maybe not so great. It's good to hear about Kent State. I knew folks at BG...it wasn't so great out there.

Yea I don't think that is a common thing people know about Kent and how they are fully endowing scholarships as a priority. It makes you wonder if other universities have other strategies that are not well known or talked about but exist and can be a method to help a university keep their athletic dept healthy.

Prior to starting the football program in 2007, ODU was required to have a football endowment fund of $8 million dollars. Through shrewd investments and continuing fund raising that fund has now grown to $28 million. It provides the team $1.4 million a year. And hopefully, one day, probably when I am gone, will provide the total operating cost of the program.

Quote:How? Penn State has football.

Yeah, but that didn't involve harm on any girls, though.

Quote:UMass is a possibility if they don't get an AAC invite. I'm not sure how long they can survive as an independent and they have no desire moving their basketball team to C-USA/MAC/Sun Belt.

I would say possibly drop if there's no room or avail spot in the FCS to the point of them thinking it's worth it.

Not D1, but this school took the bullet first.

Maranatha Baptist dropped their football program. It is an impact at all levels.

Insomuch that schools tap into home and charter school students, where football isn't offered, perhaps. I think this hits private Christian schools, like Maranatha, than others, because their enrollment profiles are impacted the most with the increase in charter school options there.

But, the Catholic and public schools will still feed their respective institutions. What will hurt those colleges will be the over-saturation of similar institutions in areas with the enrollment challenges stressing most schools out there today.

Never heard of them, is this a non-scholarship school? NAIA? D-3?

Cheers!

Other than Idaho, you mean?

I still somehow hold out hope that Idaho will pull its head out of its ___, and redouble its effort to stay FBS. Doubt it happens.

They just added the sport a few years ago. At least they played for a few years. Lon Morris in Texas added football, and the next year, the school shut down. Paine restarted their football, played for a season and dropped the sport.

Per USA Today (grain of salt)
43.6% of La.Tech's $22 million budget is via subsidy
35.24% of UL Lafayette's $23 million is via subsidy
$33.15% of UL Monroe's $13 million is via subsidy.

Now I don't know how long ULM can march on starvation wages but none of those subsidy percentages are that way out of line.
Tech has the highest percentage of the three but there are 40 other FBS schools pulling in higher subsidies

I don't know either how ULM can continue competing with a $13M budget, declining revenues and declining state support. There are a lot of schools that would have small budgets like ULM's if they didn't have student fees.

LOUISIANA, on the other hand, is OK. The Ragin Cajuns' facilities are greatly improving. We just completed a $22M renovation of the Cajundome, our basketball facility, we are near completion of a new $20M baseball stadium, we have a great Indoor Practice Facility, we completed a year ago a beautiful 100,000 sf state of the art Athletic Performance Center with a 12,000 sf weight room and 150 seat auditorium, we have the #1 softball facility in the country, we completed a Phase I expansion of Cajun Field which now sits over 41,000 with Phase II forthcoming, and we just hired a new Athletic Director from Missouri. And, we are doing that without student fees, something we need to get approved in Louisiana. With some of the things we will be implementing under our new AD, we will get our budget to over $30M and way higher than that if we can student fees approved.

ULM probably should be in the Southland with the other directional/named four-year Louisiana schools (Northwest, Southeast, Nichols, McNeese), perhaps reverting to Northeast LA U.

I think the "U of LA" (Lafayette) and LA Tech are plenty enough public FBS G5 for the state.

I see a trend here....how much longer before some Division 1 schools close their doors? Chicago St?

Or some of the D1 small privates? Presbyterian is smaller than St. Joseph's, Indiana. If we see some of these schools struggle at D1 level? I can see the large private and publics at D2 could find spots in conferences in the future.
