Hate to see Poinsettia go but I think 3-4 more should be cut. My top three
Boca Bowl (Then Move Miami Bowl to Boca)
AZ Bowl
Potato Bowl
Life does not arrange itself around the opinions of message board posters.
I've had the opportunity to visit in-depth with members of bowl committees for Orange, Sugar, and Independence.
My guess is that the Holiday Bowl people didn't like the return on investment from the Poinsettia. The game presumably was profitable but bowl games to be done right are a major suck of volunteer time.
With most bowls requiring teams to be onsite four days out that meant they were getting 2 or 3 days most years between the Poinsettia and the Holiday Bowl. Basically a week and half of being busy with very short break.
Bowl committee members have a ticket purchase obligation. The guys I met from Orange and Sugar only used their tickets if someone was coming in they really wanted to see and either gave tickets to clients/customers or just scalped them. When you see StubHub touting $5 bowl tickets, the bowl itself is fine, the people on the bowl committee are pissed they can't find willing takers nor people to buy the wad of tickets they are holding on to. My friend on the I-Bowl committee says he measures how good their selection was based on how many phone messages he has waiting for him at the office on the Monday after the I-Bowl pairing is announced. If he doesn't have clients looking for tickets he's disappointed.
I doubt Poinsettia was doing that much for the committee members other than when SDSU was in, maybe getting it for Navy or BYU but most likely their Monday calls were for Holiday Bowl tickets.
Just easier to drop it for the Holiday.
Now if I were wagering on games likely to close. My money would be on Cure being the next most likely with it being the third game in Orlando, though the whole breast cancer thing might mean a more motivated volunteer base.
The Miami game would be up there. Always going to be overshadowed by the Orange and it's just a harsh market for sports.
I wonder if Bahamas feels like they get an adequate ROI from the game.
Famous Tater? As long as the community wants to work on it, that game is safe.
