CAA-Leading Seahawks Kick Off Two-Game Swing To Virginia
HARRISONBURG, Virginia – The UNCW men's basketball team shoots for the first back-to-back 20-win seasons in 14 years when the Seahawks trek to the Shenandoah Valley on Thursday to battle James Madison's Dukes in another key Colonial Athletic Association test.
UNCW (19-2, 8-0) and JMU (6-15, 4-4) tip off at 7 p.m. at the lively JMU Convocation Center in the first of two pairings between the teams this season. The Seahawks and Dukes also meet on Feb. 9 at Trask Coliseum.
With 19 victories in hand, the Seahawks are trying to post consecutive 20-win seasons for the first time since the postseason years of 2001-02 (23-10) and 2002-03 (24-7).
Live Seahawk Digital Network (SDN) coverage of the UNCW-JMU contest begins with Mike Vaccaro providing the pregame show at 6:45 p.m. Visit UNCWsports.com/SDN for live audio coverage. In addition, a radio broadcast of the game can be heard on WLSG 94.1 FM and 1340 AM (Wilmington) and WSME 97.1 FM and 1120 AM (Jacksonville).
"The CAA is very challenging and we have two tough games this week," said Kevin Keatts, who has coached the Seahawks to a sparkling 16-6 record in CAA road games in three seasons. "James Madison has experience - they have six or seven seniors and some juniors play.
"They have a very good program. It's unfair to look at their record because when you're a new coach (former JMU standout Louis Rowe) with a new system, sometimes it works early and sometimes it doesn't. They have better chemistry now and are playing very good basketball.
"James Madison is one of the biggest teams we're going to face. They're bigger than us and more physical than us. They start two traditional posts and sometimes that causes problems for us."
With an eight-game winning streak and national mid-major ranking of No. 2, the Seahawks are one of the country's hottest teams. UNCW has won 23 of its last 25 games against CAA foes, eliciting votes in both the Associated Press Top-25 poll and USA Today Coaches poll.
The Seahawks are coming off their 11th double-digit win of the season, an 87-74 verdict over Drexel last Saturday. UNCW placed five men in double figures for the sixth time this season and sophomore forward Devontae Cacok set a new school and conference single game record for rebounds with 24 caroms.
Sophomore guard C.J. Bryce continues to lead the Seahawks in scoring with 17.1 points per game – second in the CAA - and is complemented by senior guards Chris Flemmings (15.9) and Denzel Ingram (15.4), along with Cacok (12.8). As a team, the Seahawks are 11th out of 351 NCAA Division I teams nationally with 86.3 ppg.
The Seahawks and Dukes are squaring off for the 71st time since the initial meeting on Dec. 16, 1979. UNCW owns a 37-33 edge in the series and has won four in a row over JMU, including a 78-73 decision last January in Harrisonburg.
UNCW is facing Rowe for the first time. The Seahawks are already 3-0 against the CAA's trio of new head coaches after defeating Drexel's Zach Spiker twice and Delaware's Martin Inglesby once.
A pair of North Carolinians, senior guard Jackson Kent and junior guard Joey McLean, enter the game as JMU's top point producers. Kent is collecting 13.6 ppg and McLean is contributing 10.0 ppg for the Dukes, who average just 64.5 points as a team.
The Seahawks have been a dangerous road team since Keatts' arrival in 2014-15. UNCW has fashioned a 23-17 record in true road games and a 31-20 overall mark away from Trask Coliseum in the popular coach's three seasons.
The Seahawks have 10 games remaining in the regular season and after this week's trek to Virginia, will enjoy a favorable February slate, playing five of their final eight games in Trask Coliseum, where the Seahawks are 31-4 the last three years.
The Seahawks conclude their sweep through the Old Dominion on Saturday with a 4 p.m. matchup against William & Mary at Kaplan Arena in Williamsburg. UNCW thumped the Tribe, 101-77, in the first meeting between the two longtime rivals back on Jan. 12 at Trask Coliseum.
