RE: Champlin: Guard Hakeem Baxter injured in UAB's loss at FIU
The good news is that this type of injury is unlikely to create any long-term impact to Baxter's play. Folks will have to step up. This is the same story for teams across the nation. Players get injured. Players leave. Players have bad nights. We need to be an adaptable team because those are the teams that win championships.

In essence, how this season will be remembered is going to be largely determined by how we play during a few days at Legacy Arena. Baxter should be back at 100% by then (likely sooner), and that's the most important aspect of this injury.

After our ooc performance, legacy arena was always going to be how we were remembered this year. I would like to point out that just because I have accepted this fact does not mean that is my expectation of UAB basketball. I still think we can do okay the rest of the way through the conference and wind up with a top four seed. At that point we just need to win three games in three days.

We are playing for a top four seed. Baxter's injury may have cost us the FIU game. That said the way that guy shot maybe it would not have made a difference. He hit some with guys in his face.

I'm not bummed out. It's a conference road loss. Our talent level is not where it needs to be yet but I' excited about our two freshmen and excited about this next class and seeing Scooty and Nick make the nation take notice.

Would love to see another big bruiser. Someone with a mean streak.

I hope they are still playing for the regular season championship. They will need MTSU to lose to someone else and we beat them, but it is still in the realm of possibility.

Absolutely. And oddly enough, when it comes down to tiebreakers, isn't losing to the worst team possible in our favor?

That's correct. At least now we know it won't be a two-way tie with MT at 17-1. The tiebreaker for that is drawing a name out of a hat. Really as long as we finish Top 3 we will be well-positioned to win it.

He averages over 25 minutes per game and it will give other perimeter players a few games to play more minutes, and become more efficient and experienced on both ends of the court.

In order to win games, you need your best players on the court. It is not beneficial to have them out. Using your logic, we should have done better with Norton out.
What if...he gets into foul trouble during a big game? What if...he gets injured again during a big game? Maybe better to be more prepared, as a team, when and/or if he is on the bench for whatever reason. Finally, he is shooting only 38 percent from the field and averages only eight points a game. Baxter is experienced and plays very good defense but I am hesitant to say that he is one of the best players on the team.
What if...he loses his composure and shoves a guy in the face and gets ejected and/or suspended for a game or three?

What if a sinkhole opened up and swallowed him?

I still want my best players on the floor.
