RE: Next pro team to move
There has been a change overnight concerning the Saint Louis soccer stadium. The ownership group is now asking for $60 million from the city instead of $80 million and nothing from the state. The bill to put the funding issue on the April ballot will not be withdrawn.

The April election will also be for mayor. There are seven Democrats, three Republicans, and one each from the Libertarian and Green parties. None of them has mentioned the NFL while campaigning. The next mayor will be a Democrat. The last Republican mayor of Saint Louis left office in 1949.

So even if an NFL owner was willing to build a stadium in St. Louis himself/herself, you would still be against it?? 01-wingedeagle 01-wingedeagle 01-wingedeagle

What NFL owner is gonna spend his own money anywhere aside from Kroenke? Very, very few, if you do, it better be where you can make a ton of money.

On Oakland this article does give some insight into how that city might get a pro team again, even if it did lose the Raiders to Las Vegas, which to me, is a foregone conclusion. Hopefully, San Diego will be able get the Chargers back, for keeps, and without Spanos!!!
http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl.../79601796/

Even if the Niners did want the Bay Area to themselves, the Oakland Raider fan base would never accept them. Strange as it might sound, I think the NFL would have to take a hard look at relocating the Jaguars over there to Levi's, rather than permanent losing its Oakland fan base .

I do think it's crazy the raiders wouldn't give Levi the time of day. Put some money into making it a neutral stadium, green chairs and fix some problems, i.e. Shade tarp it could be a great stadium to share. I could see the jaguars move someday but not sure if a move to Levi would be the first choice for the NFL now, think it only works for the raiders-49ers combo. I would put the jaguars in the LA and move the chargers back to San Diego with ownership trade. Of course, you need a stadium San Diego which is a big ? Also, think the chargers or jaguars might be better off in the LA coliseum post USC renovations than sharing the stadium with the rams

Will Oakland fight to prevent the new Las Vegas NFL team from being the Raiders?

I'm thinking in the sense that when the old Browns moved to Baltimore and the old Oilers moved to Nashville, they had(?) to rebrand.

Actually, now that I think about it, why wasn't the new Houston franchise called the Oilers? I'm sure there was a lot of talk about that back then.

The Oilers took the name to Tennessee, they were actually the Tennessee Pilers for a couple of years. They had only been the Titans for one season prior to the Texans being named. The Texans did actually have to make a deal with the Chiefs to be able to use the Texans name, as the Chiefs began as the Dallas Texans. It would have probably been possible to acquire the Oilers name from the Titans, but I'm not sure how many people wanted that.

In regards to the Raiders, I think Oakland could try to keep the name, but I think they'll get to keep it. There's enough Raiders fans in Southern California and the Vegas areas it just makes too much sense to keep the Raiders name. Oakland let them move once already with the name, I'm not sure how much ground they have in not letting it move again.

No, the Oilers long time owner/founder Bud Adams, who named the team, had the NFL retire the name. I think most in Houston were happy with that too, it was nothing but a legacy of losing and heartbreak despite the emotional attachment.

As for the Raiders, they've already moved and kept the name once and the brand is so powerful, they'd try to do some kind of financial settlement to keep the name.

Please point out where I said that. If a billionaire want to build a stadium in Saint Louis, that's fine. The public is not going to contribute.

The prospective MLS ownership group is trying to get the state to contribute land next to Union Station. Since the governor and legislature are against corporate welfare and that land is estimated to be worth several tens of millions of dollars, it seems unlikely to be donated for a stadium. But, no decision has been made.

The city, on the other hand, has a lot of land they would like to get rid of. But, no one in their right mind would build a stadium in those locations.

The finance committee of the Board of Alderman will discuss the city's financing of the soccer stadium tomorrow. Based on the comments of many Aldermen in the media, I would say the proposal faces an uphill fight, as does the request for $168 million to renovate the Scott Trade Center.

As for the NFL, there is no point in discussing a stadium. No team will move here and even if one wanted to, the NFL has burned its bridges.

Only teams less than 99% safe IMO are:
Jacksonville Jaguars
Oakland Raiders
Carolina Hurricanes
Florida Panthers
Arizona Coyotes
Tampa Bay Rays
Oakland Athletics

I think Raiders/Hurricanes are only ones in immediate danger (ditto Coyotes if Tempe stadium falls through) but both ultimately stay. Probably just wishful thinking on Raiders' end because a flagship brand like that moving to an untraditional city just seems so wrong.

Also I was looking whether Sacramento moved into their new stadium and laughed when I saw the address was 500 David J Stern Walkway.

Interesting enough, the NY Jets were originally called the NY Titans until they changed the name to the Jets in the early 60's.

There have been several versions of the Dallas Texans, its just that the version that played in the AFL in the early 60's, that moved to Kansas City and turned into the Chiefs, was the last franchise to be called the Dallas Texans.

There was another NFL franchise in the 1950's called the Dallas Texans, that sort of turned into the Baltimore Colts, although officially the Texans folded and the Colts were a new franchise, the Colts kept the same uniform colors and roster as the 1950's Texans franchise that had folded.

Similar, I guess to how the Cleveland Browns turned into the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens were officially a new franchise, but they had the old Browns roster and owner.

Think Orlando might get attention from the Jaguars. There seem to be plenty of capital that wants to be parked there. A new stadium would have all kinds of events. Tampa is too close though and the Dolphins would oppose it too. But Orlando metro just keeps expanding.

You said it yourself, Tampa is too close and the Bucs have been struggling at the box office, so they won't move a team less than 100 miles away to compete with them.

That is also why no NFL team will be moving to San Diego. The Chargers will struggle to fill KroenkeWorld — heck, they might even struggle to fill just the lower deck there — and the Rams won't sell out either if they continue to be bad. The league won't approve the move of a team to a city 100 miles away from one team that almost never sells out, let alone two.

Only way I can see it happening is if the NFL encouraged an ownership coup d`etat within the Chargers, and gave the new owner lots of $$$'s to leave LA and go back to San Diego. No telling if San Diego would accept the new owner though.

Any chance at all that Portland could swipe the Athletics or Angels, to create a MLS-esque rivalry with Seattle?
