Historically Black Talladega College was invited to play in the Inauguration Parade. The President of the College was lambasted by left wing nutjobs, but stood firm in his resolve to provide this once in a lifetime opportunity for his students. He appeared on the O'Reilly Factor and at the end of the show there was a small opportunity mentioned for people to support the band. They have raised $600,000 to make their dream become a reality. Not bad for a bunch of deplorables.

We have a band like that up here - UMass-Lowell (which is now Division 1). They had a football team, but it was cut in 2003. However, the Band refused to go away and performs regularly at high school shows in the area. (And they have actually gotten better since football was dropped.)

As for the gofundme page...they were looking for $75K - which they got. What is the purpose to keep giving them money for this? Are you just trying to reward them for playing for Trump? I can tell you that a lot of bands pulled out of parade consideration this year. Since the MRDs marched in 1997, there have never been fewer than 15 bands there from all over the country. It has gone as high as 27 bands in that time. This year, there are 7 bands total. And that number is so low due to the mismanagement of the parade. They only began notifying groups on December 20th - one month before the parade. That is about 1-2 weeks later than normal (which is tough enough) and waaaaay too short of a time to collect the hundreds (or for west-coast schools, thousands) of dollars required to do this performance. There are only a total of 4 groups in the parade from west of the Mississippi. Most areas are not represented - even "red" areas - because they did not give enough time for logistics.

Yep, definitely not interested in helping out with Trump trying to make one of his "look how not racist I am" publicity stunts after he ran on a campaign of straight up racism... Not everyone here agrees with you, looking at the election results in Harrisonburg most probably don't. Regardless, I doubt anyone on either side is coming to Dukes' Domain for politics.

This is a public forum, one dealing with JMU and sports, mostly the two together. In this forum there is a section made exclusively for non JMU or non sport topics. There is even a better place for political discussions. Make the post about sports and JMU or express your opinion in the right place. It isn't about "safe spaces."

If you don't like someone's post, don't read it and certainly don't feel the need to respond with ignorance.

So glad to see this band get the needed funds--and then some additional. I applaud them for doing the right thing and resisting the ridiculous pressure put on them to not go. I will be cheering them on for certain. It is a shame some people have chosen to act like this when, like it or not---we swear in an elected president this week in a uniquely American event that is/should be a source of pride for our country. Whether you like the incoming president or not is not the point. Bravo to this band!!!

OK Snowflakes, this is a feelgood thread about helping out a band in need and the power of a television program to make a difference. I think it is appropriate here on this board and not some off topic/political page where no one would see it. Yes, I injected some bias in it since Trump supporters are constantly labeled as racists. Here is a case where those very people saw an opportunity to help a black college from Alabama make a dream become a reality. I am happy for the kids and I would do this again. If you don't like it don't read it. If you want to lambaste me, have at it.
