JMU Baseball
We had an awesome year in football and some of the other threads related to football are rehashing some old stuff.
Time to turn my attention to baseball/softball. I already know a bit about our softball team but haven't followed baseball in several years.
1-Do we have any players who might get drafted in a high round?
2-Do we have any batters who just need a little more time but have a sweet swing? Any that can go yard consistently?
3-Any pitchers bringing the heat? If so, are starting pitchers named prior to a weekend series?
4-Any freshman who will be impact players?

RE: JMU Baseball
I would think that having 14 or so true freshman would make us an "inexperienced" or young team. But I also think that the freshmen coming in under Ikenberry will be solid and even an upgrade from previous recruiting classes (not meaning to disparage our other players). I enjoy watching McPherson play; I don't know what kind of pro prospect he is though. Also, there are several CC players on this year's roster that I have never seen play

RE: JMU Baseball
I feel like there is a different type of excitement (for me at least) going into the baseball season. It's a chance to see some of the Dukes that will hopefully star for us for the next 4 years. This group of freshmen are going to be the ones that help turn this program around. I'm less concerned with wins and losses this year than I am watching the team come together and grow over the season. Something along the lines of what the men's soccer team did (a lot of close calls, before a solid ending to the season) would be great. Hopefully, the baseball team can get into the CAA tournament and make a little run like last year.

RE: JMU Baseball
I'm trying to be optimistic about JMU baseball. We have slipped so far down the ladder of Virginia baseball schools that it will take some time to crawl back. I feel among DI squads, we'd be 3rd tier ( and not even top of that tier). Really going to have to change the identity of the program. As previously said, looking for some promising youngsters to get playing time. I can live with the growing pains.

I feel like Ikenberry will build a solid program at JMU. I was impressed with what he did last year with marginal talent. I think each season will be better than the last.

Going 13-11 in the CAA in Year 1 overachieved (IMO) and I'm optimistic - even with reliance on a bunch of young'uns - that we will see continued improvement in Year 2. Just changing the mentality takes a lot of time and effort to get guys believing they can win and doing the things necessary in the offseason to prepare to win. This isn't a 1 or 2 year turnaround project. Likely will take at least 3 years and some solid recruiting to get out of the grave that was dug from no winning overall nor CAA seasons from '12 thru '15.

Losing Hoover, last year's ace, doesn't help, but getting our next 3 starters (2 weekend and 1 weekday) back should set a solid foundation potentially for the weekend rotation. Of course, I hope some other pitchers are stepping up and competing for those roles.

Good luck to Coach Ike this spring. The rest of the athletic program at JMU have their standards set pretty high. Year 2 hopefully sees the Diamond Dukes making significant progress towards returning to postseason by Year 3 (if not this spring).

We have a really young staff (aside from Withers and Evans none are seniors). This could either be a long learning year or a year for some breakout performances as the So. and Jr. pitchers step up, or hopefully a Fr. has future ace potential.

Either way I'd say next year is the year we should be gunning for to be contenders. Though I wouldn't be surprised if we have strong year in 2017.

Agree about Hoover. He was a great leader and ate up a lot of innings. Fun team to watch last spring; lots of fun late inning heroics.

Very proud of Brett Johnson. Not bad for a walk-on who sat most of his first 2 years in the program, but who now is a big bat in the middle of the lineup. Good luck to him and the Diamond Dukes this spring.

Johnson's a big boy. Usual first baseman build. Evans has some size too and a lefty. Looking forward to seeing more of Dukes baseball this spring.

The game at defending national champion, Coastal Carolina, on Sunday, Feb. 19 (1pm), will be streamed live per the CCU Athletics web page. However, I don't know whether it will be free or PPV.

CCU is preseason #11 in the nation...well, in one poll. College baseball has about 2,814 polls I believe. :>)

Talk about disrespect to ccu. You win the national title and they can't even be bothered to rank you in the top 10 preseason rankings the following season.

That was a pretty big upset if I recall. I mean, generally if the CWS is not won by a Power-5 conference team of a Cal-State system team, it's an upset right?

Who would-a thought Softball and Women's basketball would garner more interest than Baseball and Mens' basketball?

Would not of believed that 20 years ago......

Proof positive that everyone loves a winner, amirite?

I'm on the "I like Ike" bus though. Confident he'll get the baseball program trending up again.

To be fair, the men's basketball team hasn't been good in over 20 years, so the basketball part wouldn't have been a surprise to me.
Baseball on the other hand is a shocker to me. At least they seem to be moving in the right direction.

We also support our women's programs better than most fan bases do. I believe that's part of what makes JMU's culture great. The school being 60% female may be part of it too.

I'm feeling the same thing. After seeing the growth of the team over the 2016 season, and the solid run in the CAA tournament, I think Bourne nailed this hire as well. We will see if his recruits can help the program make another leap this year. They are picked to finish 6th in the conference, but I think we could finish top 4. Call me an optimist, but I love me some Dukes!
