USM's Mike Landrums: One's a businessman, the other's a criminal

By ALAN HINTON

HATTIESBURG - Hattiesburg businessman and former University of Southern Mississippi football player Mike Landrum has been getting plenty of attention lately.

Some acquaintances and business clients heard that former Southern Miss quarterback Mike Landrum was convicted in the murder-for-hire deaths of his 3-year-old daughter and her grandmother.

That is true. A former Southern Miss quarterback named Michael Landrum was convicted and will be sentenced March 23 in Linden, Ala. This Mike Landrum was a transfer from the University of Alabama and was on the Southern Miss team in 1982, although he apparently never played a down for the Golden Eagles.

But the Mike Landrum who lives in Hattiesburg, a former Columbia High School quarterback who now owns 15 Primerica Financial Services offices from Florida to Texas, is not in jail and has not been convicted of anything.

"I've had clients call me. They're in shock," the Hattiesburg Landrum said. "They hear the part about the former Southern Mississippi quarterback but they don't hear the part about him being the first black quarterback at Alabama.

"They flip out."

It is ironic that both Mike Landrums were on the Southern Mississippi football team at the same time.

OMG - that's actually funny! When I lived in Hattiesburg I use to get calls all the time for another guy who had the same name as I did, mostly about his bills. This guy even wrote an editorial about it being his right to see the (at the time) controversial movie "Showgirls". My wife & I recieved calls for weeks from the religious nuts out there cursing us & saying we were going to hell & all that. So I do feel for Mike Landrum (the buisness one, not the one in prison).
