Anaheim Ducks should've never switched from Mighty Ducks. Ditto Phoenix Coyotes, Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Boston Patriots, Washington Bullets and Washington Senators.

Vegas Golden Knights should DEFINITELY be Las Vegas Aces. Most egregious of 'em all.

Arizona Cardinals should've flipped to something unique. Javelinas? Roadrunners?

Minnesota Wild should be Minnesota NorthStars. Dallas Stars should be Dallas Texans. Houston Texans should be Houston Oilers.

With you on that.... and on top of it, they did that color change to.... they're still the Mighty Ducks to me!

I get why TB shortened it to Rays.... but I did like Devil Rays better seeing as they still use the manta ray logo.... and "rays" of sunshine...

I like how Minnesota did the Wild though.... but I did like NorthStars as well. Dallas shortened it to the Stars--which fits with the Cowboys' star.

Texas is also the Lone Star State - the Stars name works well for Dallas

The Tennessee Titans should be the Nashville Kats because there are sixteen thousand eight hundred and twentyone guitar pickers in Nashville.

The Indiana Pacers should have been the Indianapolis Racers.

The Nashville Kats already existed.

Arizona Fire

Arizona could steal the NFL Europe football team Rhein Fire

One issue is that teams want a name (and logo) they can trademark as solely their own, so as to avoid copycat gear. IIRC there was a minor league Phoenix Roadrunners franchise, which may be why the NHL team chose Coyotes.

There was a Chicago Fire team... USFL? WFL?

Phoenix SoHotYouCouldFryAnEggOnTheSidewalk is too long for a nickname. Maybe Arizona Heat Stroke? Heh.

Always thought the Texas Rangers should've been the Dallas Rangers instead. I know that the designation 'Texas Ranger' exists, but I've never been a fan of a team using a state in its name unless it's the only team in the state (see Florida to Miami Marlins).

Houston Texans would've recycled Oilers like the Browns did with their name.

Las Vegas Golden Knights should either be Aces or just Knights.

And preemptively in case they are considering it, the Cleveland Indians should not change their name.

It would be nice to have seen the NY Giants rename themselves the San Francisco Seals, after the PCL team in the area), but they chose to keep the name.
LA is a different bird though. Dodgers doesn't really fit, but the only name that does, the Angels, was already been taken by the LA Angels of the American League. Maybe the LA Stars or the LA Amigos?

For some reason, the Braves name actually fits Atlanta well, and I don't know why, and so does the Hawks name. Jazz does stick out like a sore thumb, but options are limited.

What they should have been called
Utah had an ABA team named the Stars, which was somewhat memorialized by the WNBA Starzz.

If the Lakers name remained in Minnesota, maybe Los Angeles could have been the Stars, but that probably conflicts with another sport at some point in history. Timber wolves are not native to Utah, but it least it isn't an obvious mismatch like Jazz.

One of the original American Basketball Association teams was the Anaheim Amigos. http://www.remembertheaba.com/anaheim-amigos.html

That franchise moved to LA after one season and was renamed the Los Angeles Stars. A few years later, the franchise was moved to Salt Lake City, where they were the Utah Stars. http://www.remembertheaba.com/Los-Angeles-Stars.html
