CLUCK U - Battle of the Beatens
This would be a great chance for the Dragons to finally pick up their first conference win. Delaware's season has been pretty much just like Drexel's thus far. But teams picked up a couple of decent wins OOC against a fairly easy schedule. Then they're getting burned in conference play. They have played a few decent games in the CAA but unable to pull out a win.

Not a great roster for Delaware. But they guy I look forward to watching is freshman Ryan Daly. Daly played for Archbishop Carol, which is the same school that UD's rookie coach Martin Ingelsby played for. He originally committed to Hartford and then changed his mind and chose Delaware when Martin got hired.

Those who know me are well aware that I was really pushing for Drexel to hire Ingelsby. So the next couple years will be very interesting as the 2 rivals both try to rebuild their programs with new coaches, and it will be fun to see who can build a winner first.

Oh, and for tomorrow's game, it should be a large, spirited crowd. It's Alumni Gold Rush Day and the first home game not during a break since the home opener against Hartford. There's a student party in the rec center pregame, so hopefully the student section will be packed.

There's not a lot of tickets left for tomorrow's game, so a rare sellout at the DAC is a possibility.

Drexel 87
Delaware 77

Glad they are trying to build this game up as huge and get students into this rivalry. Also can't believe we are 7 point favorites against anyone in the country. This game should be a win. Delaware is awful on offense and their defense is just "meh". Rodney should be the best player on the court today and should relish in this matchup. There should be more space to work with for the likes of Iceman and Overton to help them find their outside shots. I think this is still going to be a close game, just from rivalry standpoint, but this would be a disappointing loss.

Didnt get to catch this one but was nice to get the alerts of being up big at half and extending that lead in the second half. Any double digit win is impressive, so well done dragons.

RE: CLUCK U - Battle of the Beatens
The score was 25-23 Drexel at toward the end of the 1st half, and Drexel ended the half on a 12-3 run and started the 2nd half on an 8-0 run. That's what did them in. A really good team would have completely destroyed Delaware from that point on. But Drexel just kind of traded baskets with Delaware for the entire 2nd half and couldn't really put them away. Drexel never lead by more than 19, but the closest Delaware could get was to within 13.

I saw that Drexel is 13-4 vs. Delaware at the DAC since they joined the CAA, and those 4 losses are 4 too many. Drexel should NEVER lose to Delaware at the DAC, and it's great to them defend their home turf today against their heated rivals in front of a packed house.

One thing of note: at about the 8 minute mark in the 2nd half, the team started to slack a bit. There were many, many more uncontested jumpers, and the defensive rebounding was suffering a bit. Spiker called a timeout and laid into the team on the sideline.

I'm liking his push to keep them focused.

I'm glad that you pointed that out because I can't see the huddle from where I sit.

I did notice them getting a little lackadaisical in the 2nd half. Really good teams don't seem to have long lapses like that. A really good team would have basically said to Delaware..."You guys SUCK and we're going to show you just how badly you SUCK" and then gone out to bury them. Drexel on the other hand said "We're going to play down to your level and give you the chance to get back into the game if you so choose".

Yes It was after the easy layup that we gave up. I am liking this coach but I wish he played his other players like green and peck.

RE: CLUCK U - Battle of the Beatens
hello. i used to be warpig. i hate to be the guy who posts after a win...but i'm the guy who posts after a win. my excuse is i signed up for this site after we lost to rider which is right around when we lost to st. joe's. it took a while to get approved. apparently there's a 10 day waiting period or something.

anyway...i haven't been able to see too many games aside from yesterday and what i mentioned above...but i like what i see so far. admittedly i probably would like anything short of 0 for the season to this point. it's just nice to see something different. i love how easily we can move the ball especially into the post to get easy baskets. we had a huge advantage over them inside and did a great job exploiting it to extend the lead.

i look forward to see how we can continue to improve. i agree with jb that beating delaware home and even away should be an expectation. they mentioned during the broadcast that it should've been du and ud that dominated the league once odu, vcu, and gmu left.

i disagree. it should be du that dominates. we're still a few years away from that...but it's refreshing to know the potential is there. the loss to st. joe's was less brutal knowing our best days should be ahead of us.

RE: CLUCK U - Battle of the Beatens
I wanted to point out the same thing that Medic saw a few posts back. Spiker was torqued after that easy layup. Slammed a clip board and really ripped them in the huddle. Refreshing to see that fire, mixed with all of the otherwise positive energy. It has more impact that way because it takes the team by surprise and it gets their attention. (For reasons listed below I won't make comparisons to last year.)

Also, I kinda liked the tweet that Bruiser posted after the game. Indicated that he and Spiker "hung out at the Penn game" later last night. Cool that its not an acrimonious relationship, since the mbb coaching circle is a very small one, especially in Philadelphia. Glad to see Bruiser was open to talking with Zach and that the pair can co-exist locally. As much as we needed this change, Bru will always be a big part of our history. https://twitter.com/bruflint14/status/82...9819710464

RE: CLUCK U - Battle of the Beatens
A couple of things:

1. Peck and Green - Keep in mind, these are the two recruits left from the Bruiser program. Green showed more than Peck, in my opinion. I like his length, and he showed an ability to shoot from the perimeter which is nice as well. They've been playing a 9 man rotation, occasionally 10. That's plenty right now. If Peck and Green execute the time will be there for them next season.

2. I saw the Spiker/Bruiser tweet too. If you look back through Bruiser's tweets, he stopped at just about every major D1 practice this side of the Mississippi through the first couple of months of the season. Also, the only advice that Bruiser needs to be giving Spiker is where to buy his suits. That's about where it needs to end.

3. Spiker flipping out - I LOVED it. They are going to have to play a 40 minute game to have a chance to beat UNCW, and presumably Elon as well. He wants focus out of his guys.

4. One last point, in comparison to the previous years. I feel like there are many more paths to victory with Spiker than there was with Bruiser. A Bruiser win required the team to make defensive stops and increase the value of possessions. Then, they had to make more out of their possessions than their opponents. Spiker's team has shown the ability at times to shoot from both the inside and the outside. they can pass effectively. And they have shown flashes of strong defensive play. I feel that the system he's putting together is a lot more diverse. Offense develops first. Then defense. Gotta hope that's true for these kids.

RE: CLUCK U - Battle of the Beatens
Also as was stated the effectiveness of yelling/screaming/raising your voice is all about how it is used. If someone who is mainly composed starts yelling, you are going to listen to figure out what has that person irate. If the person is always screaming about everything, you are much more prone to tune it out over time, and no matter how useful the point was it won't be an effective technique. It is just another point so far that Spiker has done very well. A coach needs to be able to motivate his players, the best coaches at any program as ones that can lead and motivate. Coming from West Point, those qualities likely are his strong points, which is a great starting point and he has shown a strong start at Drexel.

Oh, don't get me wrong. Wholeheartedly agree, I dont want Bru giving Zach ANY coaching advice. I just like that there's not a need to completely suppress the past. Spiker is embracing DU MBB history of all eras which is awesome. From Thompson and Rullo to Goss to Givens to his meeting with former players from 1983 to 2012 back in August. Embracing the school, program and history. Very cool.

RE: CLUCK U - Battle of the Beatens
To add to that, those of you who were on the CAA Zone 15 years ago, may remember the likes of Powelton Pete and that short guy who used to be a manager under Herrion who used to troll the boards. Those guys showed that there was a lot of animosity toward the firing of Seymour back then. I remember hearing that former players during that era were having a reunion at a LaSalle game out of protest.

By hearing that Bruiser and Spiker and hanging out together, that shows representation at the Bruiser crew was willing to accept their fates, not be bitter, and be accepting of moving on and passing the baton to the new coaches. From a fan perspective, I think that's important.

Again, there has been no doubt Spiker is hitting all of the right buttons to have success here and bring everybody back on board and build something special again.
