What else is going on in Loss Angeles?
Home of two of the biggest losers in NFL history, certainly in the last 30 years.

Two decades ago, when Disney bought the team. Renovations were done throughout 1997.

The Angels have an option to exit their stadium lease after the 2018 season, but they won't do that because they'd have no ballpark for 2019. The Angels owner recently considered building a ballpark in another nearby suburb but apparently that city would "only" give him the land but not money for the ballpark, so he wasn't interested.

As a guess, the team and Anaheim will eventually agree to share the cost of another renovation at Angel Stadium. The location is close to ideal for the Angels, land elsewhere would be costly, and building a brand new ballpark would be 4 or 5 times the cost of renovating.

No different than the Dodgers. I don't imagine there is any free land in SoCal with the accessibility of the current location

LA is so big, it could support another MLB team.

What about LA makes you think that? What precedent has this city/metro set to make you think yet another sports franchise in ANY sport will be supported. Just saying it's big is not enough, clearly.

New York once hosted 3 teams and still could (especially if one was in New Jersey). Also, remember the Sacramento Kings were almost a lead pipe cinch to become the Anaheim Royals, the third team in the LA market.

Check the Dodgers payroll. If a team even had a third of that they could field a viable MLB team. It's very possible for a third team to play in LA.

Why not move the San Diego Padres over there?? Gets all pro sports out of San Diego, and supposedly increases the Padres worth. Let Kronke own the team, since he's been interested in MLB anyway. From the way a lot of pro sports team owners talk, everyone in LA is just throwing around huge wads of cash everywhere, while all other cities are reprehensible cheapskates, like Ebenezer Scrooge.

RE: What else is going on in Loss Angeles?
I know you're being sarcastic but the Padres value would skyrocket with a move to LA. Just the nature of the beast. Unlike the Chargers though, they play in a relatively new facility and will be there another 20 years minimum.

As far as LA having money just remember: raw population numbers + disposable income + corporations= a large ticket and suite buying pool and an immeasurable amount that watch on TV. Even if a relatively small amount of people have a casual interest, it's better than a diehard following in places like Kansas City and Cincinnati.

You didn't answer the question. Simply saying it's big is not enough. And the Kings? They didn't move, so that's not evidence. In fact, it may be counter-evidence. What is it about the history of pro sports in the LA market that tells you another franchise will be successful?

RE: What else is going on in Loss Angeles?
I'm afraid I did answer the question. LA has a ton of people (who can watch on TV, targeted by advertisers), they have a ton of just plain baseball fans who will pay attention and watch (i.e. they're not just tethered to Angels and Dodgers) and there's a ton of people with lots of money and even if they're already Dodger or Angel fans, it wouldn't stop them from shelling out money for high priced seats and suites for a new team (many who go to sports games aren't big fans and are doing stuff like a corporate outing).

And that's even considering LA is not a diehard sports market. It, along with Orange County and the Outland Empire (as I call it) is just enormous full of people and money.

The vapors from that Clipper selling price is clearly affecting everything else going into or coming out of LA.

Yes, the Clippers, the long time whipping clowns and JV team sold for a grip. LA is just flowing with people and money. It's like a retail box store. You build as many as the market can bare, not just one per city/town.

Nope. Look beyond market size and wealth. LA has a history with pro teams. With the exception of the Dodgers this is a front-running, bandwagon town. I won't be surprised if Chargers are at or near bottom of nfl in attendance once in inglewood.

The Rams will also be near the bottom in attendance. Under Kroenke's enlightened guidance, the Colorado Avalanche have gone from winning the Stanley Cup and setting all time attendance records to consistently failing to make the playoffs and having the worst attendance in the NHL.

Yup. Tickets will be pricey, all the games will be on TV, and there are a million things to do on a nice Sunday in SoCal other than spending $100/ticket, $12/beer, and $40 to park your car while watching a 5-11 NFL team find another excruciating way to lose.

In San Diego the Chargers at least had the benefit of fans who had followed them over 50-plus years. In LA they're just another team that doesn't win enough, and there's nothing in the Chargers' history that suggests they will spend like crazy to build a winning team (as the Dodgers have under current ownership). The Chargers (and Rams, probably) will keep plodding along like they always have, like the Lions or Titans, hoping that once in awhile they will get lucky with draft picks and second-tier free agents. It would be very surprising if that formula leads to consistent sold-out crowds in LA, but that just means LA fans have some common sense. What is really surprising is that fans anywhere would keep giving their hard-earned money to teams that make only feeble attempts at success.

At one time that may have been possible, LA is such a sprawling metro area that if you placed a team in Riverside or San Bernardino back in the seventies or eighties, it'd probably do okay. However with baseball allegiances entrenched for fifty years now since the Dodgers and Angels were established in their LA and Anaheim markets, most people who are baseball fans in SoCal are already fans of them or the Padres. It's difficult to break those ties, especially in an age of instant communication where you don't have to go to the ballpark, listen to the radio, or watch TV to follow your team, you can just get an update on your phone. Sure New York supported three teams (and the NYC area has three hockey clubs now), but comparing the financial and fan base structures of baseball in the fifties to now is apples to oranges.

That's one of the reasons the Rays have such a problem developing a fan base here in Tampa Bay. Instead of having a ballpark on the Tampa side of the bay where more natives live (even if it's not a very high percentage compared to most cities), they put the Trop in St. Pete, home to a population full of transplants with preexisting fandoms. It's why the stands are packed against the Yankees and Red Sox, but against basically everyone else they have to rely on a relatively small portion of St. Pete and Tampa residents who are facing drives well over half an hour for the most part.

As I said, put a team in New Jersey and New York could be split 3 ways. As far as baseball goes, it's the easiest sport to create new fans. Pre-existing loyalties are harder to break but as long as you place the park in a neighborhood with lots of people and some level of money, it will do fine. You need to create a ballpark culture where people get in the routine of showing up 80+ nights a year and have fun, regardless of whether they are big baseball fans or not. Make them build a bond with the team and stadium experience (especially young kids) and it won't matter how long and established any other team is.

LA has a lot of neighborhoods and especially beach towns where this could work and I know lots of people that hate Chavez Ravine, especially driving there and the traffic. Orange County is Orange County (many in LA bat their eye toward them), so another LA area team could work imo.

And trust me, as a native to the Inland Empire, I know about the front running out there. The Lakers popularity is through the roof when they win but crickets chirp when they aren't great. Okay, that's exaggerating but it's not nearly as big of a following.

LA's market is so big fans can be extremely casual and it's still a better idea to be the third team there than first in, say, San Antonio. I'll add the caveat that at least one team needs to be based in Orange County if three are in the area.
