Do I believe Sessions will make voter supression a priority? Yep. Do I think he will continue his extreme homophobia? Yep.
In another post, someone asked why Sessions was so bad. I said that it might be because he's just a very mean person or it might be because he is pandering to the crude bigots that he needs to win a GOP primary. If its the second, and he is really interested in not presiding over an alt-right/racist Justice Department, then maybe he won't be awful. But Sessions is 70. I don't see him changing.
I'm also familiar with the Donald/Hays cases. Sessions appears to be grossly overstating his personal involvement in the case. And Smith did too. Figures/Dees did 90 percent of the work. Sessions provided use of his office for an interview. He also allowed US Atty folks to testify in SPLC civil trial against the UKA. Okay there's that. But he wasn't the prosecutor in Mississippi Burning folks.
Is his homophobia greater than your victim complex?
Nice attempt at passive aggression.
Please defend Jeff Sessions treating LGBT persons with dignity and fairness and standing up for their interests. In a 40 year career as US Atty, as Alabama AG, and in the US Senate.
He supported (and presumably still supports) criminalization of Gay persons, he used the awful Bowers ruling and then tried to use that to expand so that it could be used to justify denials of basic first amendment rights for LGBT Alabamians (at my alma mater btw) who weren't even engaging in sex (which is what Bowers was concerned with), he has an abysmal voting record on LGBT rights.
I come from the very small community from which Jeff Sessions does (white educated Mobilians). I have observed him, at a closer proximity than probably anyone else on this board, going back decades. I don't know of ANY Mobilians (even those that voted for him and Trump) that are willing to vouch for him not holding animus against LGBT people. The best I've ever heard is that 'he's a crude oaf pandering to the bigotries of the voters he needs to win a primary. You hear things when your in the area. Not just big things. Sessions' criticizing Disney for allowing Gay people to have "gay days" at their park for example. The man voted against anti-bullying measures, because they covered LGBT youth. There are Alabamians that are Republicans that oppose LGBT initiatives generally that I don't consider to be crude bigots (I don't consider former Gov. Bob Riley to be a bigot for example). Jeff Sessions....has provided EVERYONE with every indication possible that he is motivated by malevolence against LGBT persons with absolutely no mitigating factors.
For Sessions, no shred of dignity is too small for him to attempt to deny to LGBT persons IMHO. Its my opinion. But it is informed by his very long record.
Are there any LGBT people that are willing to stand up and vouch for Sessions? I know lots of LGBT people in Alabama who voted for Trump (sadly). But I none of them will stand for Sessions and vouch for him publicly. He's been in office for 40 years. Quite frankly, I can't even find any STRAIGHT supporter of any major LGBT initiatives that is willing to stand up for him and say 'I think he will treat LGBT persons fairly'.
