That seems to be the plan. I read an article from the Savannah news that says the current Armstrong campus will be expanded and attendance doubled while also continuing to increase attendance at GS. I'm unsure of if this will put our South Campus expansion on hold but the last I heard, plans were moving along to continue with the expansion. That expansion is suppose to bring around 10k more students to GS alone plus the apparent 14k that they want the Savannah campus to have.

If the plan really is to add 24k students to Georgia Southern within the next decade then:
This. Is. Huge.

Not quite sure about the next 10 years, but the plan is to have the Statesboro campus be at around 25k by the year 2025. I would think 10k more by 2027 in Statesboro will not happen UNLESS there is significant movement in the South Campus development.

Like I mentioned in previous posts regarding enrollment, Georgia Southern is one of only a handful of schools in the state that is growing and not suffering from enrollment retraction that is not just a statewide phenomenon but a national one, due to demographic shifting.

We're really sitting in a very nice spot from a logistical and physical standpoint. It will be wise growth too, and the University and region should prosper with this vision should it all come to fruition.

Not official yet, but seems like this is going to happen. This should bring GS's enrollment up to close to 30k.

This could explain why the Georgia BoR capped student fees in terms of percent subsidy...can't let Southern and State get too much money for athletics from their new acquisitions.

Almost sounds like Georgia Southern would be moving into C-USA demographics.

A lot of us in C-USA would rather have Georgia Southern than Georgia State if given a choice.
The irony is most Southern fans prefer the belt while I think most Ga State fans would prefer CUSA.

Yes this is likely the case particularly with such concern with I-16. They're finally moving forward with the Hwy 67 four lane construction which helps a little. Moving the nursing school to Savannah needs to be done no matter. The travel likely does more harm than good for the college from a recruiting solid students standpoint. Moving to Savannah would certainly reduce the numbers in the Boro significantly but you can take it to the bank that it's happening.

Some of you sound like this is a complete merger and you are just adding this to your enrollment. Armstrong has their own athletics program. Won't this just be similar to Arkansas and UALR?

The chancellor said in his recommendation that the new institution would be named Georgia Southern University. In other words, Armstrong State University will exist no more. I don't see how the athletic programs in Savannah can continue.

This will be just like the Southern Poly, Kennesaw State merger. Southern Poly is now Kennesaw State Marietta Campus and they are all under one semi happy roof.

The smaller school's athletic programs have been discontinued in all the other mergers.

So y'all are going to be program devourerers. I hope youre proud of yourselves. Well, there is a couple of programs I'd like to see be devoured. Think you could help me out?

I don't really have any control over it and we're just late to the party. Georgia State, Kennesaw State, Georgia Regents and several others have already been part of mergers over the past 5 years.

We would like to play some schools in CUSA. Not the same as wanting to move there. Plus the goal has always been another conference.

My mistake. Three years ago I would have preferred CUSA.

Yeah if ECU was still there, I'd prefer CUSA. As is, the Belt for sure. I wanna stay with Georgia Southern, and Arkansas State. Coastal is gonna be fun too.

How does this improve Ga Southern as an academic institution except for a bigger student body/

GS and AASU have different degree programs and focus. I forget the entry standards for both schools (I'm sure someone can google and post), but AASU is actually pretty good academically. I have a degree from both and each school had its challenges (but GS has a much better college experience). They are both 4 year universities so I don't see it as a downgrade (its not a 2 year junior college). Also, AASU has an established medical program (Med Tech, Radiology, nursing, etc...) which would enhance GS limited programs and offer students more internship choices with the hospitals in Savannah and Statesboro. I think you'll see a restructuring of programs and where they are located. AASU historically had a great baseball program and great tennis. I think this will benefit both schools and students. The biggest losers are the administration and athletics at AASU. Just guessing they are likely the ones to see the door as GS takes over.

Because it is a complete merger. Armstrong's campus is roughly 50 miles from GSU' campus(mostly interstate travel to boot). Will essentially be GSU main campus(Statesboro) and GSU-Savannah. All sports will be at main campus. Personally hoping we'll be able to use Savannah Civic Arena(Cap. 8,000)) if needed to give us more time to save up for new arena in Statesboro. This is a BIG DEAL

I'm not sure it does. How does a larger student body improve academics? There are a host of positives but the least of them is improving GS academically.

I'd say most are pretty excited about AASU joining the GS family.

I guess we should all welcome Savannah and AASU to the family. Take a look. Link below:

Will you start getting athletics fees from AASU/GSU-S campus?

Not sure at this point. Nothing that I've seen would indicate either way but it appears that with a total consolidation athletic fees would be on the table. If so we likely see Savannah as a venue more than few athletic events going forward.
