RE: Best/Worst UNCW hoops memories
Best:
1. Stewart Hare's dunk in 2002
2. CAA tournament in Richmond 2006 rushing the court
3. CAA tournament 2015 win vs. Hofstra
4. Amber Bryant 2006 first game back from winter break against William & Mary
5. Starting the 2006 season by winning the tourney in Laramie, Wyoming. This got everyone excited about the season. We beat Butler by 16 in game #1
6. Home games in 2006 - for those who have been going for years has it ever been as loud/rowdy? Honestly am curious because I have not been back in 10 years

Worst:
1. Maryland 2003 NCAA Tourney Drew Nichalas' shot at the buzzer
2. RPI mess - we were in the top 10 during the Brownell years
2. Brandon Ingram's 3 before halftime against Duke in 2016. Duke came out hot in the 2nd half and I think this was part of the reason why. We almost won this game and would have beat Yale
4. Losing to GW in 2006. We should have made it to the Final 4 that year not GMU
5. Watching Brownell in his final interview with WECT after DePaulo/Crappaccio blew re-signing him. Sartarelli actually goes to regular season games now. DePaulo blew the basketball program's momentum - so glad she is gone

RE: Best/Worst UNCW hoops memories
The USC game is my favorite for so many reasons. Beyond basketball, a friend committed suicide that day. I watched the game alone, in bed, on campus. It brought great joy in the midst of difficult circumstances.

The Maryland game the next year was so much fun. Everywhere we went to watch the game was crowded, so we ended up at Capt'n Bills. By the end of the night, the place was packed and rowdy and there was ONE Maryland fan there. Definitely the most disappointed I've been as a fan, followed by the GW meltdown. The 35-33 tournament championship loss to Mason is on the list too.

The biggest win and biggest play in UNCW basketball was the Danny Dahl shot that gave us our first CAA title. That was the breakthrough, all other milestones ahead of that were just moral and meaningless and it crashed the barrier and made all the other great events going forward possible.

CG and I listened to the Wisconsin game in 06 on the radio at a buddies house. I remember calling all the TV stations trying to get someone to pick it up because it was on TV in Wisconsin on their PBS but not here. Tough loss but listening to a game on the radio with friends is probably something I will never do again so its a fun memory

Yep. It's a fun memory that I think about every basketball season.

Best - Stuart Hare dunk to seal the win over USC. Getting to the dance was always great, but this win put us on the map. His dunk put an exclamation point on the win.

Worst - David Robinson buzzer beater at Trask. This was and still is easily the biggest game ever played at Trask and I was a student in the stands. Trask, with 6,100 in attendance, went from the loudest place I had ever been to the quietest after one shot. UNCW had been on the cusp of major upsets all year, and kept losing on last second shots. We had just lost to GMU, Wake, Indiana and Southern Illinois by one point, when Indiana was ranked #2 in the nation. Brian Rowsom had gotten to the point he could go toe to toe with Robinson and he held his own in this game.
The Navy game was a great game but I remember Robinson blocking every shot Rowsom put up for some reason. I think he broke the NCAA single game record for blocked shots in that game with 14 blocks. He was easily the best player on the court, the biggest, fastest and made the lucky shot to win the game. The Chris Meighen buzzer beater was a great finish.

RE: Best/Worst UNCW hoops memories
You guys are stirring up some good and some bad memories. My experience was 2001 to present. The USC win made me realize I needed to take my school's athletics seriously. It changed my perspective on sports after growing up in an ACC dominated state. I now pull for the Hawks, the CAA, and really any mid-major over any ACC school. This was really the start for me.

The Maryland loss ripped my heart out. The Goldsberry performance provided a silver lining knowing that we were losing Blizzard and Callahan.

Watching TJ Carter develop over his four/five years was great to witness as well. I enjoyed reflecting on his career at the end but wish he'd finished under Brownell.

Losing Brownell was actually my lowest point because it turned UNCW basketball as I knew it on its head. It was devastating. I put hope in Benny but I think I always knew we lost something special and it may be years before we'd get back to that level. My gut was right.

Nah there's just more names than I know to blame for Brownell, and I'm not sure what % of blame gets divvied up for each, so I put that all under the "Brownell debacle" label. No one gets a pass for any of that.

I should have also includes DePaolo's firing of Peg in that mix too.

You can't get any lower than spreading rumors that Brownell was a racist.

I remember the rumors reaching the board directly with a certain player's mother insinuating such things. It was obvious that some "insiders" had spoken to her and had told her somethings would change and "come to light" in the off-season. We lost Brownell that off-season.

RE: Best/Worst UNCW hoops memories
It might be better to have separate threads for "on court" and "off court" events.

The loss of Peg cannot be underestimated as a blow to the men's basketball program. If she had stayed, Brownell would have stayed. He would be gone by now, but a good assistant could have been elevated or a head coach from elsewhere could have been lured.

If there were a separate thread for off court events, the hiring of Chancellor Leutze needs to be in the top 5 events. He had a goal of raising the profile of the school and knew successful basketball teams were the way to do so in NC.

Best - Storming the court in Richmond after winning the 2006 CAA championship against Hofstra.

Worst - Ending Towson's record breaking 41 game losing streak in 2012. I've never been so angry watching sports before and never since. I had watched a once proud basketball program lose to the worst team in NCAA history. I had to seriously take a step back and tell myself that I could never let sports cause me to be that upset again. I broke the desk I was sitting at and probably said a lot of terrible things. I'm a better person now but that will still be the lowest point of our program's history.

Welcome back. This place is as lively as ever. Our regulars are all mostly still here and now we have more casual commenters since the NCAA berth last year.

Go SEAHAWKS!

I think some of our best memories might be getting formed this year, and that the best is yet to come.

The Chris Meighen hail mary was a huge win and the Princeton ripoff was a really bad deal.
