This year is different from other years. I counted up to close to 1000 famous people that have died this year alone. Some are not even well known, and others who are the golden age of hollywood of the 1930, 40s and 50s.

RE: Grim Reaper Should Hang Himself
In the olden days we only had radio and the celebrities were minimal. Then television and three networks and it grew a bit. Now we have a shite load of networks and a gluttony of "celebrities". There's some that I've never heard of and there will continue to be more of the Liberal card carrying ones in the future.

Well if someone isn't well known isn't that kind of the opposite of famous? We are an aging country and stars from the TCM era, golden age of television and the 60s and 70s music stars are getting old. They are going to be passing away at a greater rate going forward just because of their age. None of us are going to get out of this world alive.

RE: Grim Reaper Should Hang Himself
Is it me or has the term "icon" being repeatedly misused this year? There are plenty of talented people out there that passed away this year and they often made significant contribution to the arts but there are very few icons. Most recently writers and broadcasters kept referring to George Michael and a music icon. I don't mean to diminish his contributions. He was a very successful artist with I think ten major hits but that in no way makes him an icon.

Who of those we lost this year were true icons? Off the top of my head I can only think of one, Merle Haggard. I'm sure there were others, perhaps Prince?

Ali would be an icon.
Guy Clark was an icon.
Probably Ralph Stanley.

From the sports world, Arnold Palmer and probably Gordie Howe were icons. Although I think legend is a better word to use than icon.

Lavell Edwards is a legend. Kitty Kallen was an Icon for her singing during WW2 period.

Carrie Fisher is an Icon because of many teenage boys had a hardon for her as Princess Leia.

George Michael is an Icon better than Prince Be of P.M. Dawn who also died this year.

Maurice White of Earth Wind and Fire is an Icon. You do not see many bands that are made up of African Americans and whites.

Betty White is considered an Icon for her body of work.

Harper Lee is an Icon as an author for To Kill A Mockingbird. Even though she only released 1 book until the recent one that turned up. The book made her an icon about the injustice of African Americans in the south when a black man was convicted of rape when he was innocent.

David Bowie is an icon because of all the changes he went through the years.

Interesting read, which covers some of the ground discussed here. Celebrity deaths are actually down as compared to some recent years.

In this case, they're happening at the end of the year and in rapid succession.

I think you are over using the term. Many you list were important figures but they don't really rise to the level of being the symbol of a period or movement. Maurice White was the leader of a good band but not really groundbreaking. Bowie you might make a case for being a groundbreaker symbolizing androgynous glam rock. Guy Clark would represent the Texas singer / songwriter movement. Merle Haggard the Bakersfield Sound. How is George Michael iconic? He didn't introduce or change music. He was a popular singer for about a decade. Carrie Fisher was an actress and writer not the leader of a distinctive movement. For an actor to be iconic they need to be someone like Bogart who would represent the film noir genre.

RE: Grim Reaper Should Hang Himself
Just the fact that a celebrity would be an icon is wrong for one. The word icon is thrown around too easily now-a-days. If that's the case then Fit should be one too. He already has notoriety as he's used as a metaphor like Mudd, as in his name is Mudd. With Fit we have Fitfail. You're famous Fit. LOL

I think you are over using the term. Many you list were important figures but they don't really rise to the level of being the symbol of a period or movement. Maurice White was the leader of a good band but not really groundbreaking. Bowie you might make a case for being a groundbreaker symbolizing androgynous glam rock. George Michael was a groundbreaker that he was the first white male to reach the R&B and Soul music charts. He paved the way for the likes of Justin Timberlake and Robin Thicke.

Another icon would be the country singer Red Simpson who created the movement of the truck driver and Smokey songs. He wrote the Junior Brown's song Highway Patrol. He paved the way for C.W. McCall's Covey and Jerry Reed's theme song for Smokey and The Bandit.

Kitty Kallen would be an icon since she was the first to perform to the troops back in her time of the 1940s and 50s. Her song was You Can't Say No To A Soldier.

Prince was an Icon because he did something different with music videos in the 1980s, and songs like Kiss was something. Plus some of his songs sounded vulgar at times.

Blowfly who also died, had songs that sounded like a porno movie.

Emerson, Lake and Powell or Palmer also were influential with their music.

Country singer Joey Feek and her husband Rory of Joey and Rory had a video diary of her struggles and fight against cancer, and was bringing awareness to cancer. She did, and Rory continued the video diary of the aftermath of the lost of his wife, and their 3 year old down syndrome daughter who would not know what happened to her mother.

Carrie Fisher was working to bring awareness to mental health issues before she died.

No problem. I had seen earlier that someone started a gofundme page for Betty White to keep the grim reaper away, and when I read what you posted, I thought she may have died.

Some important accomplishments but the term losses it's meaning when it is applied so liberally. Are you sure about the George Michaels charts thing? There are a lot of blue eyed soul and R & B singers that predate him. It is hard for me to imagine he was the first to chart.

DavidSt has apparently never heard of the Righteous Brothers, Tom Jones, Dusty Springfield and a few other acts from the 60s and 70s dubbed as Blue-Eyed Soul". back then, people heard their songs on the radio first and were shocked when the found out they were white. Those three all hit the r&b and soul charts.

As to Justin Timberlake, pretty sure I have heard him cite Michael Jackson as his biggest influence

Carrie Fisher was working to bring awareness to mental health issues before she died.

Boz Skaggs' Lowdown was top 5 on R & B chart in 76 and that same year Wild Cherry was # 1 with Play that Funky Music on the Hot Soul Singles chart. The Bee Gees had two soul chart # 1 albums in the late 70s. I'm pretty confident Hall and Oates charted in that era as well.

Of course the best (IMHO) BES singer has had the worst record label luck so he never got much air play. That would be Delbert McClinton.

Grim Reaper Should Hang Himself
Elvis, Johnny Otis, Ricky Nelson, The Everly Bro., Hall & Oates, K C and the Average White Band all charted , some numerous times on the R & B charts before Michaels.

g. Michaels really didn't open doors for white artists. He is a good example of the misuse of icon.
