Maurice White was the leader of a good band but not really groundbreaking. Bowie you might make a case for being a groundbreaker symbolizing androgynous glam rock. Guy Clark would represent the Texas singer / songwriter movement. Merle Haggard the Bakersfield Sound. How is George Michael iconic? He didn't introduce or change music. He was a popular singer for about a decade. Carrie Fisher was an actress and writer not the leader of a distinctive movement. For an actor to be iconic they need to be someone like Bogart who would represent the film noir genre.

George Michael was a groundbreaker that he was the first white male to reach the R&B and Soul music charts. He paved the way for the likes of Justin Timberlake and Robin Thicke.

Another icon would be the country singer Red Simpson who created the movement of the truck driver and Smokey songs. He wrote the Junior Brown's song Highway Patrol. He paved the way for C.W. McCall's Covey and Jerry Reed's theme song for Smokey and The Bandit.

Kitty Kallen would be an icon since she was the first to perform to the troops back in her time of the 1940s and 50s. Her song was You Can't Say No To A Soldier.

Prince was an Icon because he did something different with music videos in the 1980s, and songs like Kiss was something. Plus some of his songs sounded vulgar at times.

Blowfly who also died, had songs that sounded like a porno movie.

Emerson, Lake and Powell or Palmer also were influential with their music.

Country singer Joey Feek and her husband Rory of Joey and Rory had a video diary of her struggles and fight against cancer, and was bringing awareness to cancer. She did, and Rory continued the video diary of the aftermath of the lost of his wife, and their 3 year old down syndrome daughter who would not know what happened to her mother.

Carrie Fisher was working to bring awareness to mental health issues before she died.

Some important accomplishments but the term losses it's meaning when it is applied so liberally. Are you sure about the George Michaels charts thing? There are a lot of blue eyed soul and R & B singers that predate him. It is hard for me to imagine he was the first to chart.

DavidSt has apparently never heard of the Righteous Brothers, Tom Jones, Dusty Springfield and a few other acts from the 60s and 70s dubbed as Blue-Eyed Soul". back then, people heard their songs on the radio first and were shocked when the found out they were white. Those three all hit the r&b and soul charts.

Boz Skaggs' Lowdown was top 5 on R & B chart in 76 and that same year Wild Cherry was # 1 with Play that Funky Music on the Hot Soul Singles chart. The Bee Gees had two soul chart # 1 albums in the late 70s. I'm pretty confident Hall and Oates charted in that era as well.

Of course the best (IMHO) BES singer has had the worst record label luck so he never got much air play. That would be Delbert McClinton.

Delbert wound up hitting the country music charts back in the 1980s and early 1990s.

Maybe George was the first white guy who sang a duet with the Queen of Soul with I knew you were waiting for me.

Carrie Fisher is an Icon because of many teenage boys had a hardon for her as Princess Leia.

George Michael is an Icon better than Prince Be of P.M. Dawn who also died this year.

Maurice White of Earth Wind and Fire is an Icon. You do not see many bands that are made up of African Americans and whites.

Betty White is considered an Icon for her body of work.

Harper Lee is an Icon as an author for To Kill A Mockingbird. Even though she only released 1 book until the recent one that turned up. The book made her an icon about the injustice of African Americans in the south when a black man was convicted of rape when he was innocent.

David Bowie is an icon because of all the changes he went through the years.

that was, informative. but i agree, throwing around the word icon a little too loosely, in my opinion. thanks for that info on the trucker songs. i write trucker songs, country western songs. i write songs about the spirit of the outlaw

It talent was the determining factor McClinton would have been a superstar.

Actress Ann Graves died today. She was in the 1962 movie, The Magic Sword with Gary Lockwood and Basil Rathbone. That link to the website about famous people dying this year does not count people who were famous at one time or have credits in the industry. Even rodeo stars are not counted, but they are still famous people. Chris Ledoux, Ben Johnson and several others who became singers or actors were rodeo stars. Reba McIntyre used to be a barrell racer before becoming a country singer.

Father Mulcahy dies one year to the day after Wayne Rogers (Trapper John) dies. Alan Alda should be very careful on December 31, 2017.

The final casualty of 2016? Mariah Carey's career.

RE: Grim Reaper Should Hang Himself
MTM's death is a sad day but she had been in poor health for a long time. She may have been the #2 female sitcom star in TV history behind Lucille Ball. Politically, her MTM character from her famous sitcom would have been a Hillary supporter for sure. But I think Laura Petrie might have been a Trump supporter. And if anyone saw the movie Ordinary People (which I think earned her an Oscar nomination?), she played a very conservative WASP character that definitely would have been a Trump supporter. And I think people said that when that movie came out, that was closer to her true personality? Maybe I have it wrong - it was a long time ago when that movie was in the theaters.

How strange is it to think (outside of Ted Knight) that all of her co-stars in the Mary Tyler Moore show out-lived her?

Butch Trucks, 69. RIP.

Quote:The Allman Brothers Band co-founder Butch Trucks has passed away at the age of 69.

No cause of death has yet been revealed for Trucks, who played drums alongside Jai "Jaimoe" Johnny Johanson throughout the Allmans' 46-year on-and-off history. He died Tuesday evening (Jan. 24) in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Trucks told Billboard last year that he "was a good drummer and didn't know it" when the late Duane Allman approached him to be in the band, crediting Allman with bringing him out of his shell and into rock 'n' roll stardom.

"I was about to head back to school and get a degree in math and teach...when Duane knocked on my door with Jaimoe, and then the Allman Brothers happened," Trucks recalled. "Duane decided he wanted two drummers -- he told Jaimoe, 'If James Brown can have two drummers, so can I!' -- and Jaimoe kept telling me, 'Butch is your guy. Butch is the guy!'"

According to various interviews and articles.. toward the end of her life, she said she considered herself "libertarian-centrist".
