And, he was a "clutch" shooter, and when his shot was falling he could take over a game. He did so many things well. Maybe 45% was too high a bar for me to have set. It depends so much on several factors. As for Jaylin Walker, he has taken more shots per minutes played than anyone else. Maybe he has the green light. If not, I think he needs select his shots more wisely and also get more assists. He's averaging fewer than 1 assist per game.
A good point guard could have a very strong impact on Walker for the better ... but Kent is not alone in failing to have one.

RE: Kent State @ Oregon State
So now that I've had some time to digest this dismal game, the biggest concern that came out of it, for me, is how bad we looked against a zone. I could be mistaken but this is the first game I remember where the opponent played primarily zone and we looked lost. It wasn't just that shots weren't going down, we weren't taking good looks. A lot of our threes weren't in rhythm and a lot of our shots in the paint were forced. Kent struggled against the zone pretty bad last year in large part because of our poor three point shooting. Personally I think we're a better three point shooting team this year but not by that much. We're actually shooting a lower % this year but that's coming of a 1-24 clunker.
To see us look so lost against a zone is very disappointing. I hoped we'd have that figured out. You can bet we're going to start seeing more and more of it until we figure it out. Personally, I think the trouble with the zone boils down to Hall. We run through him so much and it seems like he's not getting the ball in the spots he likes then he either forces it or struggles to pass out of it. Ultimately I think we need a stronger game plan to attack the zone. We can't just toss it in to him like we can normally. I don't have much in the way of stats to back up this claim but here's what Hall's numbers look like in the three games he's played against Eastern Michigan in his career and this Oregon State game (all games I know he faced the zone). In those 4 games he's 21-57 36.8% from the floor, averaged 3.3 Apg to 4.3 TO. He's a career 50.7% shooter, 2.0 Apg to 2.6 TO. So he's shot significantly worse against the zone and passed more. His Assist to Turnover ratio is almost identical to his career numbers though.
Lastly, I can't figure out what exactly we're doing wrong but we continue to get torched from deep. Last year we let opponents shoot 35.9% from three, this year it's up to 37.0%. We're ranked 285th in opponent 3 point shooting % right now and dead last in the MAC East. We have way too much length and athleticism on the perimeter to be getting torched like this. I'm hoping to see Ridenour's minutes increasing in the near future. He and Edwin get after it on defense. We need more of that.
