In boxing these guys walk around punch drunk for 12 rounds instead of 3, and might even get dropped 2 or 3 times and get back up. Lot more damage taken in the aggregate I think.

I don't think football is going anywhere anytime soon but eventually I think it will be marginalized to the poorest communities looking for a way out or the rural towns that worship Friday nights and deny a lot pretty obvious science anyway. I think as more and more people don't let their kids play that will trickle down to the general fandom as well as there is no connection.

I played football as a kid and liked football as much as anyone until more has become known about it. Did you see Gronk basically cry talking about what it's done to him? I think eventually a lot of people will have more trouble supporting it as well like me.

We got our money's worth out if it, it's the programs like ODU and UNCC that started it this century at the expense of their basketball they completely missed the boat IMO trying to play catch up.

Listening and feeling sorry for star football players who have made millions upon millions of dollars to play a game they knew was dangerous from the start... ehhh. I'm supposed to have sympathy for that? Nah, that one doesn't tug on my personal heart strings. I don't fault ya if it does yours though, I'm just not getting down with that. These guys didn't just wake up in the NFL with massive contracts and suddenly be like, "Oh man, this game is dangerous. There might be long term effects here." I dunno, who knows... maybe, just maaaaybe Gronk is that dumb. He doesn't exactly strike me as Rhodes scholar. He didn't seem that bummed about it when he was riding through Boston without a shirt on getting squirrely with his GF and enjoying the teams' success. LOL. Same with Andrew Luck. I'm still slightly annoyed with him because I got stuck into drafting him (my primary QB pick was Cam Newton and he went two picks ahead of me), and then literally 30 minutes after our draft ended he retired. So, getting past the bitterness... good for him for making bank off the NFL and then moving on when he felt appropriate. However, I don't have any empathy for them. Nobody forced them into that career anymore than I was forced into mine. They did something they enjoyed, made their big money and split.

The ones I will empathize with are the ones who don't make it to that level and still suffer debilitating injuries. That sucks. That's where I would second guess it as a parent. I'd ask myself legit questions like, "Will my son have the talent/drive to get to that level and if they don't... is it worth it?" That's where, IMO, is the only legit chance the sport dies out. Even with that, IMO, it's a long shot.

I don't feel so sorry for the Gronk's of the world that are grown men making choices with their life but remember it doesn't start there. You are indoctrinated in to the culture when you are a kid in many places.

I came from one of these rural communities that worship football on Friday's and I loved it growing up but by the time I started high school I hit my growth spurt 6-1, 145 lb and was incapable of playing it thankfully in retrospect.

My best friend was a big dude, like 250lb always pretty overweight and he got a lot of pressure to play on the Oline even though he didn't like it. I think he was made to feel like a wimp if he didn't play so I see that side of it. He broke his ankle playing had to get rods and pins put in it and got even more fat. There is a dark side I think many get pressured into playing in certain places.

However, we all know football is almost more of a cultural thing than an appreciation for the actual sport, especially in a college atmosphere. Who knows, maybe you're right that in 50 years it will be a thing of the past. But I doubt it. There are other sports far more dangerous than football that still exist... boxing for one. Hell, a guy died after a match just several weeks ago and that sport isn't going away.

Throw in the fact that culturally, football is almost as much a part of the college life fabric as is going to the library at most schools and good luck getting rid of it. Especially if by doing so, those schools and the NCAA would lose so much money. There's going to have to be something to economically fill that void before they'd ever venture into seriously letting it go.

I'll re-phrase: Football as we KNOW it will be completely different 50 years from now.

And those who think football will never lose its popularity are dead wrong. The 3 biggest sports in this country used to be Baseball, Boxing and Horse Racing. Boxing and Horse Racing still exist. But they're barely on the radar anymore. Things change over time, and that's the kind of thing that will happen to football.

The more moms that prevent their kids from playing football (starting with the suburbs and then moving from there), the smaller the talent pool and the more something will have to give. Even the Chief Medical Officer of the NFL admitted that if even 10 % of Mom's stop letting their kids play football, its time to fold up the tents. It's either stay the course and lose a huge segment of your talent pool (thus watering down the sport and making it weaker), OR revert to something closer to the likes of two-hand touch or flag football, which is of course a far less exciting product.

We know now that its not even the big hits that do the damage; it's the tons of little sub-concussive hits that do the most of it. Lacrosse and Rugby have the same problem, but of course they aren't multi-billion dollar industries.

Rest assured, football is in trouble. No matter how important it is to our culture. The NFL knew this, and that's why they treated CTE like the boogie man for so long.

It's always about money. So, unless there's a viable money replacement...

I mean look... now we have MMA that is equally as dangerous if not more. It's more violent than standard boxing, and it's consumed by customers on a ravenous level right now by comparison. So... let's not pretend human nature doesn't find entertainment in violence and easily dismiss injuries.

No equipment will ever make the game safer. Ever. Until you can put a helmet inside your skull, the brain will still slosh around after hits and suffer concussions or sub-concussive incidents.

Of course humans are enamored by that "warrior" mentality. But there are limits to this. And it's why MMA and Boxing have a pretty firm ceiling on how popular they can get. Some people can't handle that level of violence.

And that's what we're starting to see with football. What I love about football is how much of a human's athleticism is used to play the sport. But basketball has a lot of that same appeal. I'm not really a fan of the big hits. Can't we do without them?

They knew they could tear an ACL or break bones. They weren't aware of what it could do to the brain. At least not FULLY aware. And the NFL made SURE they weren't aware of it. Hence the lawsuits. It took events like Junior Seau shooting himself in the heart so his brain could be studied to wake people up. Don't you feel bad for him and his family, and many others like that?

Now that players are learning more and more about it, they're quitting earlier or not venturing to play the sport entirely. You're seeing players in their mid-20s retire out of the blue. That was unheard of previously.

Aaron Hernandez had stage 3 CTE brain at 27 when he killed himself I believe, that's what's got to be frightening along with the fact you can get it even just playing HS football. I think he had been in jail for a few years too and.The damage might already be done by college age before you even get a chance to quit.

It's bad enough that when you play you risk breaking bones, or your freaking neck and dying or being unable to walk. Now you know even if you dodge all that you got brain damage pretty much across the board. I watched about 10 minutes of Mike Houston's first game vs NC State and though why am I even supporting given 20 year olds brain damage. I think I'm pretty much out even though he's probably going to be successful.

Don't get me wrong as long as they are going to play I just as well hope for success but I doubt I watch much of it anymore. When they fired Ruff it made the off ramp easy and I haven't missed it.
