He left GT (as expected) showing nothing but class. He thanked everyone and said it was a tough decision. This is pure speculation on my part, but I believe strongly the driver here is that he was the starter as a true freshman during a tough 2015 season. He entered this past spring as the starter and was displaced to the #2 RB behind 2016 true frosh, Derrick Mills. Mills performed well in the games he played don't get me wrong. Mills was the starter for the opener in Dublin, Ireland, in the win over Boston College opening weekend. In fact, scored the winning TD while Marshall remained on the sidelines in the last minute of the game there.

Then, Mills was suspended for Game #2 (win over Mercer). That raised some eyebrows among Tech fans. I won't get into the rumblings of why because this is about MM. Marshall played well in Mills' brief absence. Held onto the starting role briefly until Mills took it and the bulk of the workload back over mid-season. Then, Mills was suspended again. This time for 2 games. In those 2 games - wins at Va Tech and home over UVA - Marshall looked like his normal strong self yet again. But, when Mills came off suspension, Paul Johnson pretty much went back to him in the season-ending win at Georgia...though, MM played well.

I think MM sees himself as the #2 RB heading into next year. Though, Paul Johnson may get burned because another strike by Mills and he's done. JMU was one of his 4 finalists coming out of HS. His signing with GT was a bit of a surprise to most as he was thought to be headed to hometown NC State. He never showed signs that he was uptight with Paul Johnson's unique offense or anything like that. Again, speculation on my part, I think (and rightfully so IMO) he was put off by being demoted this past season...though he handled it with class all year and stepped up when given the opportunities.

If I read between the lines here it also sounds as though young Marcus (being of sound character) took more exception to being marginalized by an obviously troubled and less principled player?

I LOVE this pickup. Adding him to the stable with Sharp gives us a formidable 1-2 like we've had the entirety of this year. Cardon is the wild-card in this situation, because we need to see how he returns from Achilles surgery. If he's healthy we're stacked.

The only person who loses in this situation is Taylor Woods. However, with the way RBs go (injuries), it's likely Woods finds himself in the #3 position at some point in the season and gets some playing time.

It also wouldn't surprise me if one of the RBs (possibly Woods) moves to WR in the spring, given that we are going to graduate a lot of production from that position.

Given Vad Lee as well how much does GT have to do before you ****s will bother to even send a Xmas card?? I'd like to at least be taken out to dinner before I get ****ed COME ON. 03-wink

In all seriousness, Marshall should do even better for you than Lee did. Marshall's reasons for transferring though are identical to Lee's: He won't be seeing as much playing time next year. We lost Vad Lee ... then went and won the Orange Bowl. Could be a similar story next year. Dedrick Mills saw the majority of snaps at B-Back (Marshall's position) when he was healthy. Even though he was a true freshman. Dedrick is one of those wrecking ball guys who doesn't go down easy and plows through high traffic areas .... just what you need at B-Back. And that is a skill set Marshall doesn't have. He did most of his damage at GT off option or off tackle where there was more space to work. But I'd argue Marshall is a capable back in *any* offense ... he just got the crap lottery in a true freshman that's even better coming in. Wish him all the best and I know he'll rack up a crapload of yards at JMU.

Article in DNR says Marcus' visit during the Sam Houston game sealed the deal for him to come to JMU.

We really should consider putting a small GT logo on the back of the helmet above the helmet maker's name at this rate.

I think next year we throw young Cheatham into the mix and ride the wildcat to another NC run.

Recall back in December (see above) I stated "Paul Johnson may get burned...". Well, he did. Dedrick Mills was kicked off the GT team yesterday for his 3rd strike of breaking athletic/FB program rules. I bet ol' Paul Johnson wishes right now he had treated Marcus to the level he deserved to be (just my opinion) - that is, putting his faith in MM who kept his head screwed on right and stayed out of trouble. Pretty dumb. Mills was a 1st team All-ACC preseason selection. Pissed it all away.

I think I heard Madia say on his podcast that IF he had to make a guess, he'd see the number of touches in this order: Sharpe, Marshall, Johnson, Woods. However, he did caveat it quite a bit. He noted that he was really just making a guess and also made the point that Johnson has not been full go-live until a few days ago when he finally shed the red jersey. It'll be interesting to see how the distribution goes. I'm personally a big Johnson fan but I really like them all so we're in very good shape there. There's going to be some really good backs who won't touch the football much on this team.

He also spoke really well of Woods and said he could really do it all. So, yes, I agree, RB is definitely not a concern.

Might be difficult to fit on a single poster board if his Johnson is that large. 04-cheers
