Anderson is tickled to be at stAte, especially considering he didn't get the Baylor job.

Wish we could afford to pay him like a top-3 Sun Belt coach. He has earned it.

Scott grew up about 3 hours to the east near Chapel Hill, NC and I think he wife is from the next county over either north or south of Watauga County, which also is in the mountains of North Carolina. It might be his wife does not want to move away as much as anything and she loves being near her family. The Satterfields have spent time in Toledo, OH and Miami, FL so it is not as if they have not given the "away from the family" a try.

We also had a coach in Men's Basketball coach, leave, return a few years later and then leave for UNC-Wilmington after one season. What I heard was that his wife hated the mountains, and wanted something more than Boone. In fact she may not have even moved to Boone from Charlotte.

Even when these jobs pay a lot a spouse can have a huge pull on family decisions.

All the above is speculation on my part as far as spousal influence of course.

It may be that he is happy coaching at his alma mater. Boone is a great place to raise a family. Like most any college town it does have cultural events that much larger cities would have without some of the problems that large cities have. The worst part about Boone is that there are no railroads to watch and the nearest Amtrak station is two hours away in Greensboro, but I am not sure if Scott likes trains as much as I do.

It's like the stAte coach that swore he would be there more than a year. We all know how that turned out.

Exactly...In coaching, you get paid while you can and if you can sign a contract that pays you 5 or 6 times a year what your current contract does, you sign it..then he can buy momma a vacation home in the mountains.

I don't know why App fans are even trying to convince themselves Satterfield is going to be here for ever. What's he supposed to say in that situation, "I'm really getting tired of coaching here and can't wait for another job"? I don't think Satterfield is going to jump at the first promotion like Willie Fritz did, but if the right opportunity comes along he's going to take it. A lot of football coaches are in the profession that they are because they're super competitive, if he gets a big time opportunity to prove himself at a higher level he's going to take it. I love Appalachian, but it's the nature of the beast with the size of our program. The only reason we never lost Jerry Moore is because he was too old by the time Appalachian's program really took off at the FCS level. If Satterfield continues to have double-digit win seasons and plays competitive with the big boys, he's going to get a bigger job and take it. We just need to enjoy him while we have him. He's still young, a great recruiter, and showing all the signs programs are going to look for when hiring a new football coach. The good news is we are a very well-run program with a great AD, it's not like when we lose Satterfield we're going to become some mediocre program.

I think App will be able to keep Satterfield longer than most schools at our level, but if he continues to succeed, I would be kidding myself to say he will just keep sticking around. Chris Petersen stayed at Boise State far longer than he had to, but he still went to a higher profile job. Brad Stevens turned down the likes of Oregon and UCLA when Butler was still in the Horizon League. He, like Satterfield, was a native of the state where his team resides. His wife was from Zionsville, 10 miles north of the Butler campus. He didn't graduate from Butler (his degree is from Wabash College, 30 or 40 miles west of Indianapolis), but his ties to the school and city of Indianapolis are strong. He left a great job with Eli Lilly as a young man shortly after college to volunteer coach at Butler. Eventually, though, he left, too.

If App can get the kind of loyalty out of Stay that Butler and Boise State did, it is beyond lucky.

Only difference is that Brad Stevens proved he could compete for National Titles at Butler, and Petersen took Boise to a whole bunch of major bowl games.

Satterfield doesn't have those abilities at App. At some point, he's going to hit a celing, in which the Mountaineers can go no higher because of the way FBS Football works.

And even then I think a lot of what kept Peterson there was his son and the care he received in that area. He has some specific special needs (I can't recall at the moment) and I don't think Peterson was willing to compromise that. However Washington was able to provide equal or better care which is why he was more open to the move, the salary didn't hurt either.

Now, that's going on memory of something I read, which could be wrong.

The key thing is that a lot of times there remains the possibility of other factors holding great importance.

Satterfield could be at App for a long time, but if someone comes along with a really good offer, he's likely to take it especially as early in his career as he is. Enjoy him while you can. The days of coaches staying somewhere indefinitely are over, unless you're able to pay more than everywhere else...unfortunately it'll just cost you more every time.

You could literally plug in the name of almost any small college town here and likely be accurate.

The cynicism on this board is amazing. Although he very well could, nobody is saying Scott will stay in Boone his entire career. Unlike a lot of coaches Scott isn't chasing the almighty dollar by shopping himself. If the right opportunity comes along he will undoubtably take a hard look at it. I can thnk of a lot worse gigs than getting paid over $500K to coach your alma mater and raising you kids in a place like Boone. I have a good friend who turned down a head job in this conference because he didn't want to move his daughter into her 3rd high school in four years. There are a few coaches out there who actually care more about the well being of their family than they do dollars.
