It feels like Lane Kiffin-style failing upward. But Mehringer's longer term track record is very good and the talent available at Rutgers was thin for a pro-style let alone a transitioning towards a spread offense.

RE: Drew Mehringer leaving Rutgers to join Tom Herman's staff in Texas
He moved at exactly the right time. Texas has the talent to run an offense and he has reduced accountability while being closer to home and to his mentor. Had Rutgers had another bad year offensively next year (no reason to think they won't with their schedule), he would've been forced out at the end of a contract and have a P5 firing on his resume. I doubt he would've had a good ending in NJ and I think he saw that coming.

It's not like Texas hired him to be OC. Sometimes you have to step back to step forward long term. I have a feeling he was looking to get out and found a good landing spot. If anything, the DM experiment at Rutgers falls squarely on Ash hiring him in the first place. The next OC hire will be key.
