BREAKING: Southern Miss football set to interview former Baylor head coach Art Briles

that would be a great hire because Jay Hopson is a defensive minded coach. He needs someone who knows how to run an effective offense that's exiting and will bring out the fans in Hattiesburg. He also needs someone who's willing to work for peanuts and live in the aforementioned Hattiesburg...that's Art Briles for a year or two until his image is a little more repaired.

Don’t believe his image can be repaired. He was in charge when multiple rapes occurred over a long time. If he didn’t know he should have and just points to incompetence. If he did know he’s a co-conspirator. Either way Southern Miss should run, not walk, away from this POS.

if USM had a decent season Liberty/Freeze would hire him as OC/Assoc HC

This could be interesting, does Briles help re-build USM into a powerhouse again?

I think he deserves a second chance and I think that any program would benefit from him. However he would be on a very short leash that's for sure!!!

Maybe Southern Miss has heard something through the "Grapevine" and is putting on the "Lipstick" for the AAC???

Don’t think so. We just need a spark. Mediocrity has become the norm and that is just not the Southern Miss way. We need to scare some big boys again. I hope he is hired. If this was for HC, no way though.

50+ women were raped by football players while Briles was paid $6+ million a year.

His football coaches 'interviewed' the accusers to intimidate them out of pressing charges.

I was upset when we hired Kendall. Hiring Art should should require show-cause.

Not sure if I'd want him coaching my team... But I believe in "Inocent til proven Guilty".

Hope it woks out without incidence while he is there.

I recounted this story on the CUSA thread about this topic, but here it is again:

Headed into this past offseason, Kwadra Griggs was the clear starter for us at QB. That is, until a former female acquaintance accused him of sexual assault. Griggs was suspended from the football team until the university’s investigation ended. Ultimately, Griggs was oxonerated, but only after suing the university in federal court. The federal judge found he had been denied due process because the university would not let him anywhere near his accuser, which also denied him his right to cross examine her. She eventually recanted her story and admitted she made it up.

Briles’s chances of getting away with anything like what he did at Baylor at Southern Miss are practically zero. The university has already shown it will not protect football players who get into trouble.

As for hearing something through the grapevine, no, we haven’t heard anything. Anyone who has been paying attention probably knows we would be on the short list to join a conference full of our former peers if an opportunity arose, but no one is going to listen to our pitch if we are standing there constantly shooting ourselves in the foot. You know, doing things like making the worst head coaching hire in FBS history, having a basketball coach doing homework for his players, or going through three ADs in three years (and five in seven years). We aren’t Tulane. The B1G isn’t going to invite us just because one of our alumni is a president of one of their member institutions.

Southern Miss statement: "We have met with Art Briles regarding a position with the Southern Miss football program. Following that meeting, we informed him that he is not a candidate. The University will have no further comment on this matter."

The public outcry is gonna make this happen every time he steps on campus. Liberty may be his only hope at getting back to FBS.

Southern Miss Head Coach Hopson:

“Although I respect the decision of Dr. Rodney Bennett, I disagree with it,” Hopson said in his statement. “I am so grateful for the grace and forgiveness God gives me which allows me to inherit his kingdom, which I do not deserve. I have interviewed Art Briles for an assistant position at Southern Miss and I believe he is a man who deserves a second chance. He is a man that seemed sincere and humble in his interview and personally he committed no crime. He may not have acted in the proper protocol, but that would be my JOB at Southern Miss! He was interviewing for an assistant position, even though I believe he will be a head coach at a major program in the near future. However, I believe he is a man who does love the Lord and deserves a second chance. He has been banned from employment in college football for three years and has been punished. I understand both sides have opinions, this is just mine.”

While I believe in second chances this here is one of those situations were is so difficult to absorb and take lightly.

Briles made millions is not easy feeling sorry for someone who could have stopped something like this and not do anything about it.

That gif sums up my reaction. You don’t publicly defy your President. Have a look in real time of why we are not in the AAC...poor decision after poor decision.
