Doesn't water flush the opposite way down in Australia? Maybe this kind of environment is our only hope in playing a team like Stanford.

I'm all for it. I'm hoping they pay for a big jet... and the AD puts together a travel package to offer to fans.
I agree with Owl69. At this point, it's all about the payday. Especially if we have a 2M profit or more.

I wasn't going to attend if it was at Rice, but a move of the game to Sydney actually makes me much more likely to attend. Can't beat 65 degree weather in Sydney compared to hellish Houston Augusts.

Don't worry, they have machines that make it flush the "American" way...

I've been looking for a good excuse to return to Sydney, my absolute favorite city in the world, where I haven't been since 2002 (after traveling there almost monthy for several years in the late '90s). If Rice offers a package ala the Cuba trip I'm definitely in. Having said that, I was going to host a group for the Stanford - Rice game at HRS, and this move would just add to my reasons for not renewing my football season tickets.

RE: Season-opening Stanford Football Game Moved to Sydney, Australia???
If you watch the ABL (Australian Baseball League) games you can expect this to game to have a start time around 7-9 pm CDT start time which would be noon -2pm the next day in Sydney.

My guess would be we offered the game to NRG and they felt they couldn't sell it enough to get the teams $1M or more so we got with Stanford to shop it to Australia and consulted with Cal. Cal and Hawaii drew about 45K to ANZ Stadium (former Olympic stadium).

After being embarrassed bringing Owl football to Stanford, JK now takes it international. In the end it is about the money and hopefully it will bring enough that if needed we can fire Bailiff at mid season next year.

Yeah, I think they called the game from ESPN HQ in Bristol. Allen Bestwick was play-by-play; Mike Bellotti was on color. Warren Smith was the Aussie. His AFL games are great.

Typical Yank marching bands The MOB and LSJUMB as well, for all the pomp and spectacle they are famous for.

Let's go. Road trip!

Somebody earlier said it was "just like Reliant". Yeah, except a little bit longer ride on the lite rail 03-wink

Wonder if we'll get to play at the Swans' home pitch? I caught an Aussie Rules game there back in the day...

Well, at least Rice won't have to face Christian McCaffrey again.

Na, they played Cal/Hawaii at ANZ Stadium last year, so presumably that's where they would play any future college football matchups. The Swans are full time at the SCG after this past season ended; the SCG is a solid place to watch AFL, but not sure how it would be for American football.

Sydney is my favorite city in the world. And I am pretty sure Walt feels the same way, or at least close to it. Not sure I would be able to make it, given the timing and the start of the new semester. But I would highly recommend the trip for anyone who has never been. Do the bridge climb, see something at the Opera House, do Manly and Bondi beaches, get your photo taken with a koala at the zoo (don't let it pee on you), do a wine country trip, do the harbor cruise thingy for tea or dinner (if that's not too touristy for you), and hang around the Rocks and Darling Harbour and chill.

As irreverent as the Aussies are, they would love it if either or both could make the trip.

Turns out the game I saw was also held at ANZ Stadium ("Telstra" back in the day) since it was the preliminary final (Grand Final qualifier). 61,000 on hand that night.

Wow, if I am in the business offices of Rice Athletics, this move stinks to high heaven. How the hell do you market your season tickets without the Stanford game? You can build mini-packages around the Stanford game and do an "Operation Sellout" type of plan with an opponent of that quality. You also invite recruits to a game of this caliber. Seems like a short-sighted cash grab.

If practice hasn't officially started, is there any reason for the entire basketball or baseball teams to be on campus for orientation week?

Don't the basketball players at least get here as early as possible to scrimmage pick-up?

Wayne doesn't even want his players living on campus, you think he wants them moving mini fridges into dorms?
