RE: ***WKU vs Memphis (Boca) thread***
I wouldn't worry about what the AAC fans think about where they are in the pecking order. They are not now, nor will they ever be an equal partner with the 5 top conferences, call them what you will. It really doesn't matter what they say.
Whether or not they sit atop the rest of us, in any given year, is a debatable issue. They had a lot of press this season, but none of their teams came through in the clutch, during the regular season. That could well be because of the parity among these schools, at least in their upper echelon (and I do think that is the case.) They are killing themselves off, which is the sign of a very healthy conference, particularly when they can claim some P5 victories, and like it or not, they are ahead of us in that regard, by a goodly amount.
The truth is they do their job when it comes to regular season P5 victories. The AAC scheduled 20 P5 schools and walked away with a very respectable 8-12 with at least 3 signature wins over strong P5 teams: Oklahoma, Louisville, and Notre Dame. C-USA? We scheduled 21 P5 schools, matching the AAC's desire to play with the big boys. But our record was a paltry 2-19. We will not earn any respect doing that on a year to year basis.
BTW, the other peer conferences were also anemic when it comes to P5 regular season wins:
MAC: (Scheduled only 14 P5 games and finished with a 4 - 10 record, with the weird win at OK State the best P5 win. Western Michigan had 2 wins.
MWC: (Scheduled 18 P5 games - Hawai'i had 3 of them -- and finished 3-15 with Boise winning 2 of the 3
SunBelt: (Scheduled 15 P5 games, and finished 1-14. A win over MissSU was the only bright spot by South Alabama.
So, at this juncture, I will acknowledge that the AAC sits atop the rest of us, but they are eminently "catchable" if we do a better job in our OOC tilts. As for the AAC fans who claim they are a Power Conference. That's just ridiculous. Those big boys will never admit you to their fraternity, no matter how much you cry about it. AS for being atop our heap, you have a very strong, and persuasive argument: You've gained 1 of 3 Access Bowls since the playoffs began. And you are ahead of the pack in winning P5 games. Your bowl record, however, is good, but not stellar. No matter what the donkey calls itself, when he looks in a mirror, he's still a donkey. (But don't forget that in a donkey's eyes, you are still beautiful!)
