The last two Toledo bowl crowds. It rained in Boca. In Both photos Toledo was on the near side.... Fairly spread out. Hard to tell how many we bring.

What you don't see in those pictures is the covered party deck between the upper and lower sections plus the suites. A lot of Rocket fans were on the party deck especially when it rained. Spent a lot of time there with my group. Went our seats finally in the third quarter. Montgomery is a 12 hour drive from Toledo. From Boone I would guess, it's about 7-7.5 hour trip.

I wonder whether the Camellia Bowl would move from the Cramton Bowl to Alabama State's very impressive venue. South Alabama fans seem to believe that the DG Bowl will move from Ladd Peebles if/when USA builds an on-campus venue.

I take the Google Maps time and subtract it by an hour. So probably around 5.5 to 6 if you don't stop and drive at a consistent speed limit+ 10 mph.

Quote:Camellia Bowl: Appalachian State (9-3) vs. Toledo (9-3)

When: Saturday, Dec. 17; 5:30 p.m. ET (ESPN)

Last meeting: None

Appalachian beat Ohio on a last-second field goal in last year's Camellia Bowl for its first-ever bowl victory. Toledo opened the 2016 season with a 31-10 win at Arkansas State, which tied Appalachian for the Sun Belt title. The Mountaineers have picked off 20 passes and will give Toledo quarterback Logan Woodside, who leads the nation with 43 touchdown passes, a struggle to throw the ball.

Prediction: Appalachian State 24, Toledo 20

Pre-Season Ranking of G5 Teams

This was released in the preseason and actually had Appalachian at 8 and Toledo at 9. The paragraph describing the group of rankings says these teams could break 10 wins, so I guess the author will be half right on these two.

Keep in mind, a lot of the App Alumni are in the Charlotte or Greensboro areas, which is right of I-85, so it's easily a 6 hour trip for a lot of us.

Well i'm in High Point so tack on an hour. Will see if I can make it, would likely be a down and back trip.

There are a lot of us in Atlanta that can and will easily make the trip. I have some buddies in the Carolinas that will drive to my place in ATL on Friday and we'll round trip to the game on Saturday. I really want to fill this place as the Seniors that went through the transition years really deserve a thank you from App Nation.04-cheers

Speaking of opponents this game has the potential, atleast on paper to be one of the most entertaining games of the bowl season, Toledos big play offense against Apps big play defense, Toledo has no defense, so App should score a lot of points, and as good as our defense is, we're not going to shut down that offense, hopefully, we can slow it down, and hold them to field goals rather than tds. I think we could be looking at both teams scoring in the mid 30's to low 40's, and last one with the ball wins.

Teams that scored 20 points or less against the Rockets this season:
Toledo 31 Ark State 10(27.0 Avg points scored)
Toledo 45 Maine(FCS) 3
Toledo 52 Fresno State 17(17.7)
Toledo 35 EMU 20(30.4)
Toledo 31 Central Michigan 17(27.4)
Toledo 48 Akron 17(27.4)
Toledo 37 Ball State 19(27.0)

not impressed

Not meant to impress but saying Toledo has no Defense is incorrect.

I'm impressed, particularly with A-State and Akron since that's mostly what we're familiar with. Akron gave us fits in a high-scoring affair so holding them to 17 catches my eye. And to hold our conference co-champs A-State to 10 (even though they struggled early) is impressive to me. Gonna be a tough game for App.

Toledo scores on drives that last from 2 to 4 minutes. You will own TOP. We are one of the fastest moving teams in the country and we score on long strikes. Cody Thompson is averaging 20 yards per catch on 59 receptions... He is a Jordy Nelson big play guy.

no doubt Toledo has one of the best offenses we face all year, but no doubt App has one of the best defenses Toledo has faced all year, only giving up 11 per game in the SBC. Having said that, we seem to have a lot of problems with teams that aggressively throw down field, if you throw short in the flats you have no chance, we are very fast side line to side line, but we can be beat deep in the middle, or down the sidelines.

Miami did pretty well throwing in the flats, but that is another animal. We definitely struggle with hurry-up offenses. Our D is looking to the sidelines, not lined up and giving a lot of cushion while the other team is snapping the ball. I hope they're prepared for that because if Toledo is smart, they'll wear us out with it. Intriguing matchup!

Saw this in the MAC section.

http://www.bcsn.tv/news_article/show/732601

Quote:This season, the Camellia Bowl, in conjunction with ESPN Events, which owns and operates the bowl, had the first selection of a MAC school. Once Western Michigan went the Cotton Bowl, ESPN Events and bowl officials felt Toledo was the best fit for a good matchup with Appalachian State....The next selection was the Dollar General Bowl, which took MAC East champion Ohio. Eastern Michigan was the next pick and is going to the Bahamas Bowl. The next selection after that would have been the Idaho Potato Bowl, but that was vacated to allow Idaho to play in that game. That opened up a spot in the St. Petersburg Bowl for Miami. The final MAC selection was the Miami Beach Bowl, which chose Central Michigan.

This is good news, imo. If the MAC and SunBelt continues to pair off their top teams it will help propel that winner in the polls higher than a normal bowl win. In years where neither have an Access Bowl birth the two conferences should push a ChampVsChamp bowl.

ESPN's FPI put the Camellia bowl as the most evenly matched bowl of the season. Putting Toledo as the favorite with only a 50.3% chance to win.

Only difference is that Montgomery wanted Troy/Toledo, but couldn't get an agreement with Mobile to allow them to take Troy. It was a weird bowl season in that Montgomery didn't get their first choice, Cure didn't get their first two choices, and Arizona didn't get their first 2 choices.

Yeh, I imagine the instate team with a record like Troy would be wanted by both Alabama bowls.

Doesn't change the fact that both conferences should work with either DG or Camellia to match up the conference champions. ESPN seems to enjoy their situation with the MAC and these two cities are very travel-able for all teams in our conference so it makes perfect sense to promote this for all involved. It'll even help the winner get bump in the polls.

The problem is the way the pick for the MAC rotates. The years Camelia gets first choice requires Mobile to release their first choice preference of the Sun Belt, and Mobile is not known for playing ball. Especially since they are not owned by ESPN.

This year was an interesting test case. Montgomery called for a plan that would have sent Troy to face Toledo in Montgomery, AState to Mobile to face Ohio (To avoid App/Ohio rematch), and App to Orlando to face UCF. Mobile was understandably uncomfortable releasing Troy. Any sending of Toledo to Montgomery meant Ohio likely getting sent to St Petersburg since ESPN owns Montgomery, and probably would not want AState/Ohio. That would have left an uncomfortable AState or USA against Miami or CMU pairing in Montgomery.

When neither worked, ESPN stepped in and took Toledo for Montgomery, leaving Mobile forced to take Troy/Ohio and Montgomery forced to take App. Ironically, same situation happened in Orlando. Cure wanted South Alabama to face UCF, but the AAC and CBS stepped in and forced AState to be selected instead.
