SPLASH! is an opportunity for the most creative and innovative students to pitch a start-up, social enterprise, or innovative ideas. The competition is open to both undergraduate and graduate student entrepreneurs currently enrolled in any community college, college or university in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Students can apply as individuals or as a team for a chance to win one of three category awards Biggest Social Impact, Boldest Emerging Technology Application, and Best Female Founder, and $2,500 each in startup funding provided by Cox Communications.

Good idea. They should work with Pharell to be the premier higher ed sponsor for the event. ODU logos all over, big blue joining onstage for a song, info booth, swag bag... I wish ODU had dorm space for undergrad aged attendees. Shame its not just a few weeks later. Since housing is short near the beach, it would be great to get those fest kids on campus, even just as a place to stay for the weekend and get familiar with ODU. Since VB is being stingy with its busses, ODU should lend its ODU branded shuttle to the cause. All those people seeing ODU would be great. A roving billboard for 25,000+ people and associated with a cool brand. Worth every penny.

Awesome idea - especially since I’m sure ODU students will be attending. Tremendous marketing opportunity.

Did I miss anything in the writeup that highlighted growth in academic programs, admission standards, or improvements academic rankings ?

They literally highlight why you shouldn't be focused only on admission standards. And the only time we've ever been ranked by US News has been under Pres. Broderick. So I'm not sure what the complaint is there.

Very glad they opted for one of the athletics logos and not one academic logo. That hat is too sweet! I may have to get another ticket for an extra hat.

I am too haha although they used the Academic logo with the skeletal crown as their promo on the promotions page, but had the bearlion logo as the patch. I think W&M is the only one with their Academic logo as the patch instead of the athletics logo

Hate our academic logo. Glad they used the athletics one. I do wish it was the curly W hat though.

These were similar to the Nats spring training hats, which I thought were cool, but didn't want to buy one b/c I didn't attend ST. So I'm pretty pumped to get this one. Just bummed they aren't fitted (understandably).

ODUs BOV approved freezing tuition for the coming year for in-state students and active duty. The state will also increase their funding by $3.1 million;

UVA did the same thing and got $5.52M for a smaller school. That is much less diverse school and who has a $8B endowment. I wonder why we only got 3.1M. I thought Gov. Northam wanted to make amends for his racist past. Don't believe it.....If he really wanted to help minorities he would have given ODU more $ and those less diverse school less money. Actions speak louder than words.

Probably because the politicians wouldn't let him even if he wanted to. Though it does drive me crazy that we've had two Governors from Hampton Roads recently and neither of them have done much for ODU. I am starting to agree with you that funding should have a diversity component applied to it. JMU, UVA and VT would probably go out of business (not really, but you get the point).

The only complaint would be that our peers are advancing at a faster rate and separating themselves. It really wasn't that long ago that ODU, VCU and GMU were ranked practically the same. Now the other two have separated themselves a bit (moreso GMU). CNU came out of nowhere and lapped us, and Radford is nipping at our heels. Is ODU improved? Absolutely. But when the competition is improving at a faster rate, thats a problem.

RE: ODU Brand/Image Improvement Thread
Just had a little chat with a summer intern who's at ODU. He went to Morgan State before coming to ODU. I asked him what it was like on campus and just kind of picked his brain a bit. I asked about sports and engagement. He said he doesn't think there is a lot of school spirit/pride at ODU. He said there isn't a lot of communication to the students about the games. At Morgan State there was banners everywhere promoting things and band would be playing around campus - a lot more hype. His take is that at ODU is really primarily focused on academics, which is it's core and I agree with. But in the context of athletics and this forum and us wondering why students don't attend the football games he said he doesn't think ODU does much to engage or communicate. He said there is not a lot of social stuff going on around campus either. He had a interesting take on why there are no parties on 42nd street. No parties on 49th. Just nothing going on. He said his generation blows things up quick. Example - someone has a party. All it takes is one tweet or instagram post and it gets out of hand and the cops are there instantly. I was like wow I hadn't thought of that. Even when we had parties or get togethers it took hours to get out of hand because we had to page our friends and they had to go find a pay phone or be at home. Things took longer to matriculate unless it was planned.

He said he thinks ODU football needs to be completely re-envisioned and started over in that regard.

I know this wasn't the point of this post but man how times have changed quickly, when I was attending (2009-2015) literally every house on 42nd was throwing a party with the cops hanging out just to make sure nothing too over-the-top happened. I totally get how twitter or instagram could ruin that nowadays but that is shock to me lol

Haha that was my reaction. I didn't even live on campus or near it but if I was going to hang with friends who lived over that way it was just a stroll around and you could find a party or someone doing something.

And yup - the cops typically would come over and say hi just to make their presence known. Often times with the weird "you want a beer?!" knowing damn well they can't hah.

And it got me thinking talking to him - we had pagers. Pagers. haha

You could hear this one from Colonial Place, especially when the DJ (I presume when the cops busted it up) exclaimed "y'all gotta go, parties over."

RE: ODU Brand/Image Improvement Thread
I guess I was in the sweet spot. Facebook was still college only, and 90% of the students had an account. It was relatively easy to spread the word about stuff, and cops were left out. Of course, they still knew where to be and when to be there, but nothing like how it is now where it's really easy to blow stuff up.

After I graduated, using the event feature on facebook was a godsend. Made planning/hosting parties after college even better

I think this is a myth. If you follow anything on social media, students are definitely having a good time. Maybe this one kid just doesnt know anyone, perhaps because he came from another school. I think to interview one kid and take only his opinion as this is the way things are at ODU is ridiculous.

Secondly about students attending the games. Really? You really need ODU or someone to tell you there is a football game going on? If you have any interest at all you would look up the schedule. If you cant even do that, then I really doubt you would ever go to a game even if ODU hit you in the face with free tickets. Some students these days are pathetic.

**** looking up the schedule. Just watch the traffic on Hampton Blvd. or walking around the campus or listening to the band or on Kaufman Mall.

Both good points, CMett and Jump. And as my link showed, kids are still throwing ragers. That leads to this question, does said intern live on campus?
