From what I've seen, and I've looked into it, we don't even have an alumni chapter in the Baltimore region.

I think the Nats baseball experience continues to get better each year. I like Camden yards more, too, but like you said - we just don't have a presence there.

My cynical prediction - ODU will try it at Harbor Park and it won't be a success, so they won't explore the Nats park option.

We have been having ODU night at Harbor Park for years.

I did not know that. How well attended is it?

The Norfolk Tides average attendance this year is 5.1k. That game, held on a chilly April night (56 degrees at first pitch), brought in 7073. The night before ODU night, they brought in 4890.

I'm glad this made the news.
I met with Dr. Papelis during and after the 2018 Senior Design Expo. My group designed and built an ROV for our senior design project. A part of the competition that Dr. Papelis' team has to try and tackle is to have an ROV complete a series of tasks and return to the mother ship. Met with him a few times and shared with him all of my research. Sorta wish I was sticking around for grad school, I would have loved to help out in that part of this project.

Sounds like an interesting project. We should really try and step up our game in the technology and innovation arena and become at least Virginia's most advanced tech school. We have ways to go before we can even compare ourselves to Rice etc but we have start at some point.

You would have really enjoyed the senior design expo this past spring then. My group was approached by several Defense companies to join them to work for their ROV type of stuff. Instead I'm working on a start up around my project, on hold right now as I need a job to pay the bills as I work. Turns out the gate keeping is strong and is going to take longer than I expected to gather info.

Some other projects at the expo that I thought were cool:

ODU and two other universities teamed up and made a number of satellites.

A team of CET students designed an expansion for the library. The project was far beyond what you would expect for ET students. It looks like one of them taught himself quite a bit of architecture panning. IIRC every floor had blue prints drawn out as well as 3D models for the interior of each floor as well as the exterior of the building. Sorry no link for this one.

I think a few projects that were at the expo, and some that didn't quite make the cut are also in a market research phase to bring their projects to market. One of my favorites from the MET department not at the expo was a guy that made a solar powered truck topper that provided enough power to run a skill saw or a TV should you want to go off grid and build a cabin.

Dean Adams has been amazing. Next years expo should be much better, as this year was the first attempt. If you have ideas to help accelerate ODU's progress reach out to the college of engineering. Some really cool stuff is going on there now.

Thanks! I expect the engineering school to start making waves in the state soon. The dean is also working on a scholarship fund too. I plan to donate to it once I get a nice nest egg rebuilt.

Our fellow Monarchs are doing well reppin the brand. Have been in Key West the past few days and saw two different ODU shirts. Can't say I saw any other college gear aside from FSU and Miami.

That's exciting. I know we work closely with school of engineering and have a scholarship fund. I'm going to be at the Hampton Roads Tech Expo Sept 5th and it's largely sponsored by ODU and being held at vmasc. Lots of energy on the area around engineering and tech innovation.

Posted from mobile device. Hopefully it's coherent.

For those who don't see much of a connection between athletic success and academic prestige I give you this from a recent article on FAU. "FAU president John Kelly enjoys the attention Kiffin has brought the school, as ESPN reported a 35 percent increase in out-of-state applications." In one year out of state apps went up 35%. Thats incredible. I know the F4 appearances by GMU and VCU helped push their reputations past the Monarchs, but perhaps the impact was even greater than I expected.

You're talking to me. I'm in camp that good academics are not required to follow a good athletic team. I also don't think good athletics lead to good academics. We've talked about this im the past and shared to studies and evidence that support both sides of the discussion.

Aside from my personal opinion, my experience also doesn't agree with the good sports result in good academics.
I have family that are applying for school next year and the next few years, as well as volunteer at Granby highschool for a robotics team.

Of schools you just listed GMU is the only school many of my out of state family have heard of. When I was helping kids find and apply for colleges this past spring at Granby, not one discussed FAU or VCU. But i suppose that data pool is skewed due to the quality of the student. They were applying to and/or got accepted to Georgia Tech, Harvey Mudd, MIT, RIT, Swarthmore, Tufts, Williams,, Virginia Tech, W&M, Washington Lee, and AMU and a few more i can't recall at moment.

Most of these schools are not.or never have been athletic power houses, yet they are highly ranked academically.
Liberty has HUGE numbers of applicants every year and have had some athletic success. But many people consider them to be a diplomia mill. Infact I have met with some people that refuse to hire their graduates.(Just interviewed with on in Lynchburg last week.) I doubt their football team is going to change their image of being a school only slighly better then Devry or ECPI.

Hope this was coherant, typed this out on my mobile.

ODU Named a National College of Distinction
https://www.odu.edu/about/odu-publicatio...l=feature1

Quote:"We're especially proud to be named a College of Distinction because schools are accepted based on four main criteria: engaged students, great teaching, vibrant community and successful outcomes," said Ellen Neufeldt, vice president for student engagement and enrollment services. "Old Dominion University excels in those areas year after year."

Colleges of Distinction's selection process consists of a review of each institution's freshman experience and retention efforts alongside its general education programs, alumni success, strategic plan, student satisfaction, and more.

"We are absolutely thrilled to recognize Old Dominion University as a College of Distinction for its effective dedication to student success," said Tyson Schritter, chief operating officer for Colleges of Distinction. "Colleges of Distinction is so impressed with Old Dominion University's curriculum, which is enriched with the kind of high-impact educational practices that are most crucial for student development. Such innovative engagement is preparing the next generation of young adults to thrive after college."

Other schools on this year's list include Wake Forest University, the College of William & Mary and James Madison University. But Schritter is quick to point out the organization's list represents more than scores and data points.

"Colleges of Distinction is far more than a ranking list of colleges and universities," Schritter said. "We seek out the schools that are wholly focused on the student experience, constantly working to produce graduates who are prepared for a rapidly changing global society. Now recognized as a College of Distinction, Old Dominion Universitystands out in the way it strives to help its students to learn, grow, and succeed."

I emailed the Facebook group letting them know our link on the website goes to "under construction" but all other VA schools in the "Colleges of Distinction" database are updated and complete.

Yea, that recognition is much better than just throwing out a bunch of anecdotes about our university's regression. ODU is doing well and its best days are yet to come.
