RE: ODU Brand/Image Improvement Thread
Rankings. Academic profile of the school. Average GPA and SAT scores. Graduation rates. Incoming Freshman class comparisons. Overall student bodies. My wife and I both attended Old Dominion. I've been a season ticket holder for 25 years and a student before that. My oldest daughter will be attending in the Fall. You will find no bigger homer/fan of Old Dominion than me. But I truly believe Old Dominion is regressing academically instead of progressing. The school should be so much further along academically. The region has so much to offer and can attract so well as Monarx wrote above. But they have chosen a different path. We've kind of gone back to the Community College approach. You can get in easily and then we'll just see if you can graduate - you probably can't - but at least we made it accessible. I don't believe the actual programs have necessarily declined - it's still tough to graduate from. We just don't have the overall student body capable of high performance. JMU, VT, GMU and even VCU have all sky-rocketed over the last 10-15 years and - again - I'd say we have declined. The people I went to school with are not sending their kids to Old Dominion. There all going to VA schools but not Old Dominion and it's sad to see. They've come down for campus tours out of a sense of duty only to go through horrid campus tours led by students openly stating they can't wait to get out of there. Campus environment is poor and student body pride and enthusiasm is non-existent. It's a "we have to be here - we have no other option" environment and it's a cancer for the campus. I'd love to see ODU merge with EVMS and I think it was a strong possibility but I think that opportunity has passed and it's not coming back. The strengthened relationship with Sentara is an outward sign of their future. EVMS doesn't want to be affiliated with ODU and that's a shame and such a missed opportunity for Old Dominion and the region. If the schools academic profile was better - I don't think that would be the case. That's my take on things. I'll always be a Monarch and wish nothing but the best for the school.

What is our USNWR ranking these past three years compared to the years Dr. Runte had the seat? Might be helpful to state these if we are making these kind of assertions. And where are we with regard to the Top 100 Research list that was so often stated as her goal?

That's mostly anecdotal. Like FTL said, if you're going to assign that level of negativity on the school, bring facts to back up your opinion.

My views are not meant to be Anti-Broderick or pro-Runte. I was just pointing out that during that time - ODU made a concerted effort to raise minimum academic requirements and our enrollment increased. But - I'm glad to see there are so many alumni who are very happy with Old Dominion's current level of academic excellence. That's a good thing.

This is accurate, and ODU failed to capitalize on it and publicize it. We fell right back out the next year. ODU simply isn't known for anything anymore other than diversity. 20 years ago ODU was known as a rising state school with a top notch womens basketball program, near the beach with a good oceanography, education and engineering school. My guess from speaking with many of my friends kids who by and large are not really interested in ODU, is that our school no longer has any identity other than diverse. They also think campus is not safe (from what they hear). I also agree that the school thrived under Runte's visionary leadership, though I also hear from good sources that she wasn't well liked by the state government officials. My guess is that Broderick has been told by his bosses at the state level in no uncertain terms that ODU got too "uppity" thinking it should be a top tier school that should compete with VT and GMU, and he was ordered to focus on being a generic diverse commuter school. Which after a good 20+ year rise in profile under both Koch and Runte is disappointing. Just a hunch from comments from folks close to the school over the last few years. My friend's kids all considered GMU, JMU, VT, CNU, VCU, Radford, Longwood... ODU is literally the last choice out of all of those. But these are mostly traditional aged, above average (but not UVA/WM level) students for whom diversity is not the most important issue in choosing a school.

So, we got the only tier 1 ranking under Broderick. But he's helping lower our academic standards due to a sole focus on diversity (which isn't true) from Runte's tenure. That just doesn't reconcile.

The rest of your post is just a bunch of anecdotes.

You can buy gear that has both the Nationals and your school logos. We unknowingly wondered into "UVA Day". What grinds my gears is when I saw where VCU (and W&M) have featured nights but not ODU especially when I know ODU is trying to make inroads in the 15,000 alumni who live in the DC area. Sometimes I think our people are asleep at the switch. https://www.mlb.com/nationals/tickets/pr...day-series

+1000

I think I've spoken about it before but this is something small but significant that ODU can do. I knew lots of ODU alumni that I went to school with that were DC sports fans, especially nationals fans. A lot of them live in the DMV area as well. While it wouldn't be as big as a VT or UVA day, I don't understand why this hasn't happened. Maybe we can get in another year but the Nationals have been doing this for a few years now, and even sell Nationals hats in the university colors (which I see people wearing all over the place). This is something ODU should and should have already hopped on

Contact the ODU DC/NOVA Alumni Association. All it takes is a commitment from them to sell a certain number of tickets for their group, I think 2k.

As someone who frequents nats park regularly, it pains me to see the VCU and JMU Nats gear in the team store. However, I would be shocked if ODU could pull this off if they need 2k people. I just don't think 1) we don't have a very big footprint in the DMV, and 2) we just don't have the same kind of school pride that VCU and JMU alumni and students have. That pains me to say that too, but its true.

I think you'd be surprised how many would drive from out of the area for it. And I'm not entirely sure what the total tickets required to get the hats made is. It could be less

But my other point remains. If y'all want an ODU night at Nats Park, contact the ODU DC/Nova AA and ask them why this isn't happening already. They should already have an explanation for those of you wondering. And if they don't have one, they should respond by doing the research to figure out what is required to get it done. Stop wondering and start reacting.

Great suggestion so I did contact the ODU Alumni Association DC\NOVA Chapter. I even offered to help them with this anyway I can. They said they are "working on" a "College Days" ODU night for both the Nats and the O's with no further details.

I graduated this past semester.
My exposure to Dean Tanner and Dean Adams have shown me that there are people at the top that have every full intention to improve ODU's academic ranking. There have been increased partnerships with local businesses, large® amounts of donations towards academics, and a general feeling from students that can see a vast improvement on campus in the last 3-4 years.

I'm glad this made the news.
I met with Dr. Papelis during and after the 2018 Senior Design Expo. My group designed and built an ROV for our senior design project. A part of the competition that Dr. Papelis' team has to try and tackle is to have an ROV complete a series of tasks and return to the mother ship. Met with him a few times and shared with him all of my research. Sorta wish I was sticking around for grad school, I would have loved to help out in that part of this project.

Would love a college night at Camden Yards. Its a much better ballpark and baseball experience. However, I do think that in terms of building awareness for the ODU brand, and accessibility to the most ODU supporters and alumni the Nats event makes the most sense. From what I've seen, and I've looked into it, we don't even have an alumni chapter in the Baltimore region.

I think the Nats baseball experience continues to get better each year. I like Camden yards more, too, but like you said - we just don't have a presence there.

My cynical prediction - ODU will try it at Harbor Park and it won't be a success, so they won't explore the Nats park option.

Sounds like an interesting project. We should really try and step up our game in the technology and innovation arena and become at least Virginia's most advanced tech school. We have ways to go before we can even compare ourselves to Rice etc but we have start at some point.
