WBB Game 5: ODU (2-2) vs Darmouth (2-2)
This Wednesday the ODU Lady Monarchs will play the Darmouth Big Green in the annual Education Game. (I realize that the men are also playing Darmouth later. This article will about the women's game....)

Darmouth College is an Ivy league school located in Hanover, New Hampshire. The term Ivy League is often associated with academic excellence, selectivity in admissions, and social elitism. First year students will find that the total cost for the 2016-17 school year is $69,879. (And that doesn’t include any health insurance or computer that might be purchased through the school) But for anyone reading this who wants to attend Darmouth, you should know that free tuition can be provided for students from families with total incomes of $100,000 or less. Of course getting accepted by Darmouth is the tricky part. Darmouth also has the smallest enrollment of all the Ivy League schools. The attendance in this game will be more than the total enrollment of Darmouth by the way.

Former ODU assistant Belle Koclanes is the head coach of the Darmouth Mean Green. Her official title is the Gail Koaziara Boudreaux ’82 and Family Head Coach of Dartmouth Women’s Basketball. Named after Boudreaux who is Dartmouth’s all-time leading scorer and rebounder and a three-time Ivy League Player of the year. As a family they donated $2 million dollars to the women’s basketball program as an endowment. She is a former CEO of UnitedHealthCare and from 2008 to 2014 was named one of the 50 most powerful women in American business by Fortune.

Big Green’s Schedule so far. RPI: 304 SOS: 316
Vs Central Conn St W 61-51 Record: 1-5 RPI; 325
@ Vermont L 59-64 Record: 2-4 RPI: 285
Vs Holy Cross W 53-49 Record: 1-4 RPI: 314
Vs Army L 68-60 Record: 4-1 RPI: 96

Before I go on, I want to point out that the Ivy League is going to have a tournament this year. Normally the winner of the Ivy League’s regular season is the NCAA rep. However this year the top four teams in men’s and women’s basketball will face off in a mini-tournament.

The team plays mostly starters. From beyond the arc you have to guard Letkewicz, Szabo, McKenna, and Andi Norman. They are a solid rebounding team and they will try to go inside. We won’t dominate the inside as much as we did against NCCU.

Inside the numbers…..
…………Dart…….ODU
PPG……57.0…….73.5
OPPG… 56.8…….72.0

TPG…….13.0……..19.0
SPG……..6.0………9.0
BPG……..2.5………5.0

Ast/TO ratio
DART: 0.9 ODU: 0.9

For those that have never been to an Education Game, it’s such a contrast between a regular season home game. The crowd during the regular season is usually pretty quiet throughout the game. (Until the team needs the 6th man of course) For the Education Game though, it’s loud and energetic from start to finish. It’s fun for everyone involved and definitely something you should experience at least once.

RE: WBB Game 5: ODU (2-2) vs Darmouth (2-2)
Simms. Jennie Simms. Scores the first 10 points of the game for ODU. Finished the half with 21 points. (And Dartmouth as a team had 24 points) Finishes the game with 35 points in 35 minutes of play, to go along with 10 boards and 5 assists. Yeah....vintage Simms.

Final score ODU 82, Dartmouth 56. The truth is the score probably should not have been that close if the Big Green hadn't caught fire beyond the three point arc in the 3rd quarter For the game Dartmouth went 9-for-17 for three pointers but in the 3rd quarter they went 5-for-7. So yeah, ODU's three point defense got a little sloppy.

Ice Cream and Cake three times during the game? With a crowd like, you give them what they want. :-) Today was fun in the stands.

Positives to take away from this game. 10 turnovers by ODU is the lowest on the season. And freshman Manaya Jones continues to develop into a strong presence down low. (this season is averaging 7.2 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 1.0 bpg, 61.5 FG%) and looks to be a strong inside option to compliment Simms and Young. This is much needed since we are still without Ajemba.

For our second road game of the season, we play yet another ACC team in Miami. The Hurricanes are a nationally ranked program with four players averaging double digits per game. Including Newport News native Adrienne Motley with 11.3 ppg. Make no mistake about it. This is going to be tough...

Nice win, but Simms won't be able to do that against a full CUSA schedule. She's gonna get blanketed, and others need to step up.
