It's funny how this season has progressed. The season started out with, every win is a must win to give them a chance at an at-large bid. The Charleston loss was such a punch in the face for them. Now it really doesn't matter if they finish 3rd or 4th. After 4th place, it's such a drop off. They're going to have to beat JMU on their home floor anyway to have a shot. Not sure how the standings will finish up, but there may not be any advantage to finishing 3rd vs. 4th. They're still going to win 20 games and go to the WNIT. Finishing 4th would give them an earlier quarterfinal game and a few hours more rest to prepare for the semi's.

I agree. I am not sure who we would rather face between Elon and JMU but to cut down the nets it will have to be both of them. Id much rather have JMU earlier, because we just don't seem to match up with Elon very well and we always seem to play JMU tough, even on their own floor.

Its hard to beat a team 3 times though. So, I would pick wanting Elon.

RE: Drexel Women's Basketball 2016-17
That "hard to beat a team 3 times" adage drives me nuts. A truly better team will beat a lesser team 3 times. What's so magical about a 3rd time? Sure, sometimes it takes 2 loses for a coach to adjust, but don't you think the winning coach is going to be adjusting, too? Maybe if a team has 2 flukey wins over another, the loser can win game 3, but its just wrong to put too much stock in that adage.

I hate to say it, but this year Elon is just better than Drexel. Third time or not, they have a big edge in the tourney against us.

RE: Drexel Women's Basketball 2016-17
I agree with bdragon about the 3 times rule. Good teams always beat their opponents 3 times to win a championship.

That said, I'd much rather see Drexel face JMU in the semi-finals. It will be a home crowd, but probably would be more mild than a JMU crowd in the championship game. If they can somehow get by JMU, then we'd have a chance to see a championship game on a true neutral court. I

I agree with bdragon as well on all fronts. They have a big game Friday at home against W&M. W&M started the OOC strong and has feel back to an average team. We cannot overlook them and will still be a challenge that if we don't shoot well we could be in trouble. Let's keep this train going and win games we should and compete with Elon/JMU. Delaware was a nice bounce back win but we need to keep it going and work to secure that 3rd seed.

Record setting performance today by Meghan Creighton today. In addition to scoring her 1,000th career point, she also nailed 10 3-pointers, in 14 chances, and scored 30 points. Dragons bury UNCW today 76-51, and will remain in sole possession of 3rd at the end of the day.

RE: Drexel Women's Basketball 2016-17
Another impressive win for Drexel tonight, 80-65 at Towson. Kelsi Lidge was back on the court, but still has a cast on her wrist. But that's good news for the Dragons to have her back.

Drexel is now 19-6. Looking at their stats, they've won 18 of their 19 wins by 10 points or more. The only other win was a 1 point win over Syracuse. And all of their losses were by 12 points or less. So that Charleston loss could really turn out to be devastating, as that could have been the game that could cost them a potential at-large bid. I still think that this is the best Drexel team ever, and still has a chance in Harrisonburg.

Drexel can clinch the #3 seed on Sunday if they can beat Delaware. That's a national TV game on ASN and Comcast Sportsnet, at 3:00.

RE: Drexel Women's Basketball 2016-17
The CAA is getting the typical mid-major lack of respect. ESPN WBracketology has Elon in the next 4 out. At 20-6. CSM doesn't even have Elon in the next eight out. RealTImeRPI has Elon as the autobid, JMU with an at-large as a #12. Drexel not mentioned in any of those breakdowns.

I guess my point is, at least according to these pundits, Drexel would have needed at least 2, probably 3 wins against Elon,JMU in addition to getting the CoC loss back. Right now we're 0-3 against against the top two which seems too much to overcome in the at large race.

Just win the tourney and forget all of this. I agree, they have a chance in Harrisonburg. They can win it, although they might have to beat 3 teams that have beat them in the reg. season to do it.

RE: Drexel Women's Basketball 2016-17
A real tough grind it out defensive effort by both teams today the DAC but Drexel was the toughest in the end and fought out a 53-49 OT win. Drexel made just 15 FG's in the 45 minutes played and only 5 in the first half. This team seems to have a different hero every game, and today it was Jess Pellechio who scored 23 of Drexel's 53 and knocked down big shot after big shot when needed, including some huge free throws toward the end of regulation and OT.

Drexel shot just 28.3% as the winning team. Last year, the Drexel men beat Penn in OT and shot under 30%, and I was trying to find another time when the winning team shot less than 30%, and couldn't find any. Regardless, they're going to have to improve their shooting percentage the rest of the season.

Another fascinating stat that I wasn't aware of until now, is that Drexel won their first OT game in 7 years. They've only played in 6 other OT games since February 2011 and lost all of them.

With the win, Drexel gets their 20th win for just the 4th time under DD, and they clinch the #3 seed. Getting the #1 or #2 seed looks to be nearly impossible.

3 games left with a big one at home against JMU.

not so fast my friend.

i have to admit i haven't been able to catch a game this year. you spoiled the outcome today on facebook. i will make a good effort to see the jmu game next saturday morning.

they're not better than the caa title or wnit title teams until they've accomplished something at the end of the year. obviously i hope they do. the caa title team had marginean who is the best player in the program's history. they were the david facing goliath two days in a row despite being a #1 seed. beating odu who had won for like 100 straight years was an accomplishment in itself. turning around and beating jmu on their home floor was miraculous.

the wnit team was probably a little tougher inside than the caa title team. wootton was a terrific player by the end of her career. i still wouldn't bet on marginean...ever. she refused to lose.

We have slipped some in conference play, but I think it is still safe to say this was the best regular season the women's team has ever put together. Will they compliment that with some postseason success? Time will tell, but it is hard to diminish the regular season they had, especially OOC.

RE: Drexel Women's Basketball 2016-17
Friday's game against JMU at home can really be a game for us to get ready for the CAA tournament. If we want any chance at cutting down the nets, we need to win this one to make JMU the #2 seed and Elon the #1 seed. I would still rather face JMU on the road than I would Elon anywhere, until the final. JMU winning against us just about locks them up as the top seed which would mean we face Elon in the semis, assuming both teams win. Hopefully we can get some kind of crowd there Friday and get behind the women down the stretch. We all know JMU will travel well to this game.

Its a good season but the year we won it all and played in the NCAA Tourney was the overall better team.

It depends your definition of team. As far as a balanced team that could hurt you in multiple ways, the Championship team does not compare to this squad, in my opinion. Yes that team had our best player ever, yes we had a healthy Jasmina, but that was about it. That team went as Gabi went. If Jas had a bad game the team also struggled because it meant Gabi had to do even more than she already was. We had decent role players (Nicole, Brooke, Jenn) and the freshman that year (Tyler, Kamile, Marissa) really hadn't done anything. Most of them grew after their freshman year. So in my opinion that team, while great and still our only Championship team, is not as good as our current team.

Our current team does not rely on a single or 2 players each game or rely so heavily on shooting well to win. This team plays better defense and has more players who contribute from night to night, which to me makes a better overall team. This team has won games when shots are not falling. The 2009 team just about could not win unless our shots were falling.

I will change my stance if Drexel wins on Friday and or gets to the championship game.

RE: Drexel Women's Basketball 2016-17
A couple of things that I want to add between the comparisons between the 2009 team and this team.

In 2009, the CAA had 12 teams and played the unbalanced schedule. Drexel got the luck of the draw that year by facing JMU, VCU, and ODU one time each. So that team only had to face the top 3 teams in the regular season just 3 times. That team went 16-2 in the CAA.

This team has to face everybody twice. Had the 2009 team had to face the top teams twice, there's no guarantee that they would have finished 1st.

I do agree with Dan that this team is much more balanced. The 2009 team was Gabby or Bust. This year, if you take any one of their top players out of the lineup, they're still dangerous. Losing Lidge may have been a key factor in the team losing the Charleston (that slight loss of depth may have hurt them), but they still went 4-1 with Lidge out of the lineup. Clearly that team had more of an inside presence that the 2017 team seems to lack. Both teams are very strong defensively.

RE: Drexel Women's Basketball 2016-17
It was a brutal weekend for Drexel Basketball, but the weekend ended with a light at the end of the tunnel after W&M beat JMU.

JMU looked so dominant at the DAC on Friday and I thought that nobody was going to beat them again this year. Drexel played another clunker of a game today at Hofstra, but it was basically a meaningless game. This is 3 not so great games in a row for Drexel. Hopefully this can work as a positive for them. They know that they have a lot of work to do to get back to their early season form. The at-large bid is now officially out the window. Now it's time for them to regroup, and try to get a win in Williamsburg on Wednesday. Then get ready to go all out next weekend in Harrisonburg without any pressure on them and give it their best.

Looking at the standings, it appears that even with the Charleston adjustment, that Northeastern is locked into the 6 seed, and Drexel will take be playing them next Thursday in the 3 v 6 game. The good news is that Elon is hosting a pretty bad UNCW team on Wednesday and they can clinch the #1 seed on Wednesday. Drexel would have to beat JMU on their home court anyway to win the CAA, so I'd much rather they get that shot in the semi-finals instead of in the championship game.

This turned out to be a really interesting day in the CAA. Drexel and JMU both lost after battling hard on Friday, while Elon nearly got upset against Towson. What we saw today is a good sign for all of the CAA teams, even the bottom teams, as is shows that anybody can beat anybody else in this league. Even though JMU and Elon are the class of the league right now, they're not unbeatable.

Hopefully the women can carry on the tradition of a Senior-Night Beatdown in Williamsburg since the men didn't get a chance this year.

The men did beat a more talented W & M in February so the tradition still stands just it was at home. Here hoping for the women to play strong all march long!
