Most Prestigious Football programs since 1980
Since I have absolutely nothing to do on this sunday evening other than watch the NFL. Decided I'd put together some stats to calculate to figure out what SB team has the most Prestigious program over the past 35 years, 1980-2015. I chose several categories and put a point total with it based on importance to program history, all based on my opinion. I chose the categories before I started calculating so to be as unbiased as possible. Due to time, I only used the programs who had a strong enough history to claim bragging rights in this debate. Totally for fun. Hope you enjoy ...
Categories: ..................... Points:
FBS National Titles .......... 10 (obvious zero for everyone)
FBS Conference Titles ...... 8
Bowl Wins ....................... 6
Bowl Appearances ........... 4
All-Time Winning % ......... 1
FCS/DII Titles .................. 5
FCS/DII Title Appearances .2
FCS/DII Conference Titles ..4
FCS Playoff Appearance .... 1
College FB Hall of Fame .... 1
NFL 1st Rd Picks ............... 2

Here are the results: (total points for category)
1a) Troy- FBSCT=5(40), BowlW=2(12), BowlA=5(20), Win%=1(1) DIIT=2(10), DIITA=2(6), FCSCT=6(24), FCS PA=7(7), CFBHOF=0, 1stRdPick=2(4)
Total =124
1b) GS- FBSCT=1(8), BowlW=1(6), BowlA=1(4), Win%=1(1) FCST=6(30), FCSTA=8(16), FCSCT=10(40), FCS PA=19(19), CFBHOF=0, 1stRdPick=0
Total =124
3) App- FBSCT=0, BowlW=1(6), BowlA=1(4), Win%=1(1) FCST=3(15), FCSTA=3(6), FCSCT=12(48), FCS PA=20(20), CFBHOF=2(1), 1stRdPick=0
Total =101
4) stAte- FBSCT=5(40), BowlW=2(12), BowlA=4(16), Win%=0 FCST=0, FCSTA=1(2), FCSCT=2(8), FCS PA=4(4), CFBHOF=0, 1stRdPick=0
Total =82
5)Idaho- FBSCT=1(8), BowlW=2(12), BowlA=2(8), Win%=0, FCST=0, FCSTA=0, FCST=6(24), FCS PA=11(11), CFBHOF=0, 1stRdPick=0
Total= 63
6)ULL- FBSCT=2(8), BowlW=2(12), BowlA=2(8), Win%=0 FCST=0,
FCSTA=0, FCSCT=0, FCS PA=0, CFBHOF=0, 1stRdPick=0
Total =28

Thought the results could bring about some interesting conversation (or argument). Since I did this on my own, I could've missed some numbers. So if you find a mistake, please share and I'll update.

RE: Most Prestigious Football programs since 1980
Not sure why I'm replying to this, but we have an FBS conference championship, 2 bowl wins in 2 appearances, 11 FCS playoff appearances from when a bunch of current G5 teams were still FCS and a 1st round draft pick (Mike Iupati, who's also a zillion-time Pro Bowler). So under this totally arbitrary system that's 41 points. Good for us?!?

Wait, didn't add our 6 Big Sky titles in that time frame -- I have a hard time thinking of those as "prestigious." So that's 65 points.

I would. You get more notice being ranked for 1 week than you do for winning 600 FCS conference titles.

We are an FBS conference.

Why would anything accomplished outside of FBS matter?

This is as stupid and irrelevant as the Sagarin rankings, trying to compare apples to oranges, by including FCS teams in their FBS rankings.

Because some conference teams still lose to FCS teams.

How many teams, that make up the current Sun Belt, were never FCS or lower?
It's not hanging on when that is a teams' History.

RE: Most Prestigious Football programs since 1980
It is when we are all FBS. We had some good 1AA teams and it never made us look good in the grand scheme of things. To coach's credit he said it's his opinion and that's fine but take that and the word prestigious and our peers of today will laugh at you. App's win at Michigan however long ago it was counts more than the lower level championships. Troy' s top 25 does the same. If it's your history be proud of it but don't put out there as something that is prestigious today.

I based the numbers on accomplishments up to 2015. But I agree, weeks ranked in the Top25 is worth recognition.

RE: Most Prestigious Football programs since 1980
Some folks seem bitter about their history. We still can't keep a coach with a half ars winning record none of which landed in the Sun Belt following short stays in the Boros version of peewee. Anyone suggesting that preFBS performance is meaningless has the least to be recognized. iMO

Cool list. I wouldn't mind seeing OOC wins (both FCS & FBS) in there somewhere too.
