I've heard New Mexico is a nice place. Not a spoken vacation destination but it makes sense to travel there if you have business coming up.

A coworker of mine (App Alumna) took her kids (one of which is a FR at App) on a road trip to NM this summer. JUST to see Heisenberg's house...

I've got a friend that skis at Taos and likes it there. Good alternative skiing destination for someone that wants to save a little money and not fight the crowds in Colorado.

Las Cruces makes a great base to see:

White Sand Dunes National Monument
Carlsbad Caverns National Park
Guadalupe National Park
Hatch, New Mexico (of Chili Fame)

Lincoln National Forest is pretty as well.

Plus, you can go to Juarez :)

Taos was the first mountain I went to out west for skiing. It's a very interesting place

I will add to your list:

If you want to hang with the Texans there is Ski Apache near Ruidoso about 2 hours from Cruces.

And my personal favorite is Old Mesilla just outside Cruces home to my favorite restaurant (La Posta).

New Mexico is a beautiful state and is so diverse from the Rocky Mountains in the North (Red River/Taos) to the Low Desert in the South (Las Cruces). I lived in the ABQ Metro for many years and NM is an awesome place to vacation. 04-cheers

Old Messila was really neat, and La Posta was the real deal!! There's also a brewery down that way, for those that enjoy a cold beverage.
