RE: Barber resigns
Now that the dust has settled, and the public statement of why Barber left, other than the PR thanks for the great job release, why did he leave? He seemed entrenched with JFJr and the school. Personal, professional, bad judgment family or other. Any ideas?

RE: Barber resigns
I'm guessing he promised to get Liberty to FBS and it became obvious he couldn't deliver. We missed our shot with the Sun Belt and there aren't any other conference lining up. I imagine Jerry gave him a deadline and it passed. Jerry gave him the money for the facilities, the coaches, and more and it wasn't in the cards.

Women's basketball is worsening lately, hockey missed the playoffs for the first time in a while (I think), baseball went south and fired their coach out of nowhere, basketball recently changed head coaches and is in the middle of a complete rebuild, and football is on the razor's edge between being competitive and also needing a complete rebuild.

We got passed by Coastal Carolina for the open Sun Belt slot, James Madison and Richmond (with Liberty's former head football coach) are doing well, and attendance is down seemingly in all sports. Time to make a change before it gets too bad.

Good capsule of what likely are the reasons. I was hoping that someone may have some inside info about the resignation/release/termination. I know from a big booster/alumni peer that Gill was making a bundle with his salary and that he had/has high expectations, as yet to be fulfilled with marginal success.

I listened to the podcast with McCall on the air and I have to say I am optimistic for y'all. I know he has a checkered past but he sounded the part.

I think McCaw is a good athletic director, maybe even great. The problem is his baggage and Liberty allegedly forcing out Barber to hire McCaw. Liberty loves hiring on the cheap and saw a deal with McCaw and are banking on everyone just forgetting anything that happened. Let's hope nothing else is compromised

I agree, he is definitely a great AD. The interview I felt he said the right things so I think it will work out. It is a tough blow PR wise.

Just a guess, but I think he was hired to over see us going FBS independent in football.

How would going Indy FBS even happen? Realistically speaking there is no mechanism for a school to go FBS Indy from FCS anymore.

Yes, he didn't say much about FBS but I'll be shocked if he doesn't get y'all there. He is intelligent just has a ton of baggage. He was asked about the stadium expansion and didn't say too much but I think that's going to happen pretty soon. He didn't shut down the opportunity of expanding before the move to FBS so I think it will happen sooner rather than later

This is correct... for now. There is no way currently for Liberty to move up as an FBS independent. What Liberty could do is either get rules changed or get an exemption that would allow them to move up as an independent. The only other option that I can think of is to get a two year football-only membership to a conference which gives Liberty time to move up to FBS through the transitional process.

But is that the approach LU is going to take? Has anyone heard of any real rumors about this?

Why is it that probably the two fastest growing most competitive programs in current history can't stay out of the headlines? (Louisville & Baylor). Are they really doing things that wrongly or are they being picked on because they are joining the elite group?

I'd love for LU to enjoy the same success, but not at the same cost.

I think they are doing things unethically which makes them do well on the field and court. They are compromising themselves to advance and expecting to apologize later if it is ever discovered. Win at all costs.

I seriously think after next season Gill will get canned and McCall will hire Chadwell from CSU. He is a great coach but wants out of there and the administration does too. He was a finalist for Furman and UTC but both went away from him. Would bring in a proven winner and put y'all as easily the team to beat in the conference. If you want to win he is your man. I know he has baggage but I just can't see them passing on a chance to solidify Libertys spot as top of the Big South. Take the best teams coach will do it.

That's an interesting point about Chadwell being hired. My guess is that LU would want to make a bigger name, higher profile hire with a big splash. Chadwell's teams have kicked LU's butt the last 2 years so there is no denying he is a good coach.

Examples would be former Cleveland Browns coach Sam Rutigliano that was a big name hire for LU. And of course current coach Gill. I watched Gill get beat my Miami in the Orange Bowl. He was with Oklahoma as an assistant and then two stints in the FBS with Buffalo and Kansas. Even though Gill's coaching success has mixed reviews, as a player he was outstanding and had strong coaching success at Buffalo, but fumbled at Kansas. Both much bigger name than Chadwell, even though Chadwell today is the better coach than Gill.

I just feel as a recruit I would rather play for Chadwell than Gill coming out of Kansas. Just from a football stance Chadwell has won consistently at this level and Gill got fired. I think LU would be dumb to not get him since it seems he wants out bad.

RE: Barber resigns
Gill took a Buffalo team that had done nothing up to his tenure and turned them around which landed him the Kansas job. At the time, Gill was THE hot up and coming coach. Kansas was viewed as lucky to get him. Gill tried to rebuild the program and took a long term approach and was fired after two seasons for Charlie Weis. It was a nationally a big deal that Liberty hired Turner Gill and he still was viewed as a big name that was unlucky in a place that is impossible to win. He was a big coup for Liberty at the time. Just listen to all the praise that non-Liberty announcers give during Liberty games.

I don't think Chadwell would be a high profile hire but he would be a great hire. He won't get mentioned on ESPN or anything like Gill was but he'd likely improve the football program. I'm surprised that he is still at Charleston Southern which makes me think he's got some baggage hidden that isn't good.

A name hire would start with Art Briles. The nation would go nuclear if Liberty did that. Other than Briles, Steve Sarkisian would be a big name but likely not "Liberty material." Al Golden probably carries some weight. Greg Schiano too. I doubt Liberty could get any of them to come (if they'd even want any) but they'd get the national attention.

Yes they would get publicity with those hires but the focus is winning. Art is a winner but y'all don't want that idc how good he is. Chadwell is a coach that would come in a compete right away and could have y'all primed for a shot at a title in 2-4 years.
