MAC Football Conference Scheduling
I get annual rivalries make this harder, but MAC needs a permanent formula so all teams play everyone on a regular basis.

Set an opposing division opponent each year in perpetuity
UT - BG
BSU - Miami Red trophy
EMU - Ohio Green trophy
CMU - Kent Gold trophy as both schools use that color
WMU - Akron Broncoroo trophy or something
NIU - Buffalo Jet trophy since this is a bad bus trip...whats left

Other two games a rotation of the other four home and home every two years so you are playing everyone every other year at the least. Post on website and the rotation set forever.

Example of problem. Toledo until this year had not played Ohio since 2010

RE: MAC Football Conference Scheduling
I think a lot of those irregularities are just the result of having uneven divisions for such a long time with Temple and then UMass, now that we're back to 12 teams it should be a little more normalized. IIRC, Miami-Ball State will be an annual cross-divisional game along with BG-Toledo to keep schedules balanced, it's not really a rivalry but it's about as close as any other cross-divisional game will get.

One 'fixed' crossover game would leave five other crossover opponents, not four. I believe what you suggest will have the opposite effect you want for some teams. Most teams do not have a crossover rivalry game today so by adding one, they will play the remaining 5 teams less often.

Five team rotation over five years
Year 1 @ A Home B
Year 2 @ C Home D
Year 3 @ E Home A
Year 4 @ B home C
Year 5 @ D home E
Most you would go with out playing an opponent is 3 years

RE: MAC Football Conference Scheduling
It seems like this has just created a different imbalance than the one it is trying to solve. I don't see the practical difference. Creating artificial "rivalries" that have no real basis and forcing those pairs of teams to play every season is an imbalance itself much like the one that already exists.

The way to solve the problem and allow a true rotation of cross-division games is to move BG to the West and Ball St. (or other West team who has no singular rival like NIU or EMU) to the East. Now, there may be other reasons why you might not want to do this, but it is the answer to this particular problem.

RE: MAC Football Conference Scheduling
Why does everyone complain about the schedule? Before the season began Eastern was supposed to stink, Central was supposed to contend, NIU was supposed to be NIU, Akron and Kent State were supposed to be good and Buffalo was supposed to be, well, Buffalo. No one ever thought Western would be unbeatable this season. The only team to be the team everyone thought they would be is Buffalo In this conference reality is all our teams beat up on each other after getting beat up by P5 schools on a regular basis.

I know. Its just a strange word combination.

But then again, so was the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl, or the current TaxSlayer Bowl... 03-puke

Ball State and Miami, two Mid-American Conference universities separated by a little more than 70 miles, will make their football contest a ‘Red Bird Rivalry’ trophy game beginning in 2017.

At least it's not as contrived as the Civil ConFLiCT.

RE: MAC Football Conference Scheduling
Something needs to be established. Should not be a six year gap between games. The schools that do not have cross division rivalries could rotate among themselves
Toledo appearances vs east non rivals
Akron 2013 (before this year)
Buffalo 2013
Ohio 2010 (before this year)
Miami 2011
Kent 2015

RE: MAC Football Conference Scheduling
But there is only one pair of schools that has a cross-division rivalry. So Toledo and BG have a limited number of available slots they can be put into. The other West teams, for example will simply not play BG as often as they do other East teams. Same for the East and Toledo. Other than moving BG to the West or Toledo to the East, it is not going to change. The MAC schedules around that one rivalry. There are going to be gaps in the other teams UT and BG play.
