Early Signing Players for UTEP basketball
Here is a list of the guys that have signed with UTEP this week. UTEP does not have this many scholarships available so I have no idea which will actually make it onto the court at UTEP.
Evan Gilyard- Gilyard is a 5-9, 160-pound guard from Simeon Career Academy in Chicago, which has produced numerous NBA standouts including Milwaukee Bucks forward Jabari Parker and New York Knicks guard Derrick Rose. Gilyard is regarded as a three-star prospect by ESPN and the no. 13 player in Illinois. He averaged 13.5 points and 3.2 assists last season while shooting 49 percent from three-point range. He was second team All-City, two-time All-Conference and honorable mention All-State. He scored 14 points in the fourth quarter of the city championship game as Simeon beat Kenwood 54-49. Gilyard, who has led Simeon Career Academy to a 96-7 record, continued to turn heads on the AAU circuit this summer while playing for the Meanstreets’ 16- and 17-under teams. “He is a unique player. A lot of people look at his size and don’t think he can do the things that he does on the court,” said Simeon Career Academy coach Rob Smith. “He’s tough as nails and plays really hard all the time. What I love is how tough he is. Without him we don’t win the Kenwood game. He didn’t score a bucket, then he scored 14 straight to give us the lead. He’s really smart off the court and comes from a great family. He loves to be in the gym. He’s going to do everything he can to get better and compete every night.”
Kobe Magee- The 6'0 guard is ranked as the #10 overall player in Texas for the class of 2017 by TexasTop100.com's top-100 list, and was also listed as the #8 3-point shooter in his class by TexasTop100.
A now three-year letterman at Brandeis High School, Magee averaged 17.1 points this past season as a junior, and hit a career high 79 3-pointers leading Brandeis to a 31-2 record and a top-10 state ranking as well. He averaged 18.5 points, and four rebounds per game as a sophomore, and will certainly see his recruiting stock grow with another year of high school remaining.
Tirus Smith- Smith is a 6-8, 230-pound forward from Petal High School in Petal, Mississippi. A three-year varsity letterwinner, he was appointed to The Clarion-Ledger’s “Dandy Dozen” as one of the 12 best players in the state of Mississippi for the 2016-17 campaign. He averaged 16 points, 11 rebounds and 2.5 blocks last season. Smith participated in the MAC/Mississippi Sports Medicine All-Star Classic as a member of the South team in March. Smith also played for the Elfrid Payton Elite AAU team. “Tirus is closer to 6-9 than 6-8,” Floyd said. “We haven’t had an interior player who shoots it like he does from three-point range but make no mistake, he can also post. We feel like if he were here right now, he would help us as a high school senior. Like the rest of the guys we have signed, he has incredible potential and I believe he will reach it because of his high character. He has never had great point guards around him and I feel like that is going to help lift his game beyond where it is now.
Isiah Osborne- is a transfer from Canada that is sitting out this season. Second-leading scorer on the University of Windsor's 2015-16 squad, averaging 15.0 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.2 steals ... named the CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) Rookie of the Year and helped the Lancers post a 23-12 overall record and 14-6 mark in conference play ... the University of Windsor reached the OUA (Ontario University Athletics) Final Four for the fourth straight year and finished first in the OUA West Division ... Osborne was also appointed the OUA Rookie of the Year ... was a member of the Toronto 3D Global Sports Team that toured China in May and played games versus All-Star teams representing the 1st League of Lithuania, NBA D-League/NCAA of the United States, and the China National B Team ... in August of 2016, scored a game-high 35 points with seven rebounds and five steals in a preseason exhibition versus Division I Charleston Southern at the NCAA/OUA Tip-Off Classic in Windsor, Ontario.
Rodrick Williams- JUCO guard/forward Roderick Williams has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball at UTEP beginning with the 2017-18 season, Miner head coach Tim Floyd announced on Tuesday.
Williams is a 6-7, 210-pound forward from Los Angeles, Calif. who is currently attending East Los Angeles College. He will have three years of eligibility with the Miners after redshirting at East LA College last season. He has played in two games for the Huskies so far this season, averaging 17.5 points, 10.0 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.5 steals with a .500 (13-for-26) field goal percentage and .643 (9-for-14) free throw percentage. The versatile Williams previously played at Price High School in L.A., where he was named the 2015 John R. Wooden High School Player of the Year for the CIF Los Angeles City Section (Division VI). He led Price in scoring in back-to-back years and to the semifinals at the 2015 California state playoffs. Regarded as a three-star recruit by ESPN.com and the no. 19 player in California, Williams averaged 16 points and seven rebounds as a prep senior. “Roderick had 25 points and nine rebounds in only 21 minutes in his first junior college game this year,” Floyd said. “Our fans are going to love his athleticism, his ability to shoot the three, his midrange game, his ability to bring the ball up and also post. The best compliment that we can give him is he’s going to help us win.”
Williams can be considered as the prized gem in this class as his size, scoring, and rebounding can immediately help things next season.
