Cacock is ferocious on the alleyoop! Who wants to defend that?

RE: Game 1 - @Eastern Kentucky
Feels like a good win, despite the blown lead. By the time I got home last night, the OVC roku feed wasn't working (should have caught OT). Defending without fouling is still an issue. 27 fouls called and a FT discrepancy of 24-5 hurts. Sounded like there were some questionable calls down the stretch, but we seem to condition refs to blow the whistle.

Yep. He's an asset in so many ways. And I think his defense stands to improve in a big way. Court-time is a must for him. Let Marcus and Chuck compete for secondary minutes, at least for now.

It's almost an unfixable problem we just have to deal with, sadly. The only area where we can really get better is avoiding the handchecks and other fouls far from the basket in halfcourt sets. The other types of "aggressive" fouls are going to happen, and there's nothing we can do without fundamentally changing our approach (which of course no one supports doing).

RE: Game 1 - @Eastern Kentucky
Some additional notes from last night:
* Flemmings played 44 of the 45 minutes last night. A lot of that was dictated by gameflow, as we had so many guys in foul trouble and needed Chris in there. He also had the quietest double-double of his career (18 pts, 10 rebs).
* We only committed 2 first-half turnovers and 8 total. Flemmings, uncharacteristically, was responsible for 4 of those 8 TO's. We did a great job taking care of the ball, and forced 13 TO's by EKU. It seemed like we forced more TO's than that, but EKU's live stats WAS having some issues last night.
* Richmond and Ingram combined for 8 assists and 0 turnovers. We knew that Ingram was a very capable PG but it's also nice to see Richmond playing so well. He may be our quickest player, especially when it comes to his first step, and EKU's announcers spent much of last night praising JaQuel as our "unsung hero", especially when he delivered a couple great passes to Cacok that led to easy points.
* Fornes looked pretty lost out there in his first game against D-I competition, and the box score reflects that. 2 fouls, 2 turnovers, 0-2 from the line in 9 minutes of action. Keep your chin up kid, it'll only get better from here!

RE: Game 1 - @Eastern Kentucky
A few thoughts after watching the replay.
We played well overall, but really missed Bryce when he went to the bench. I wish we had a little different approach under 4 minutes. Like the fouls, I guess that's just something I have to get used to, but we're up 61-55 and still taking quick shots. That's not the criticism it sounds like, just a stylistic preference. The possession where we scored our 63rd point was beautiful. I'd like more of that.
Mayo is a good ball player.
Good effort overall.

Its not unfixable but it is a trade off for the system, its pretty hard to be so aggressive and not foul some. The disparity in foul shots can be hard to overcome against better teams. I think it is also a mindset with refs at times to call tight against a team that presses nonstop. Handchecks are usually a player just being lazy mentally and maybe be just tired-it was the first real game they have played. Its also a lot easier to guard smaller, slower D2 players .I think with time it will get better with this team.
I did not see the game but any win on the road is a good thing. Cacock is a real key to this team I think along with Chuck they must stay healthy.

I do agree there. For a guy that hasn't accomplished very much he sure does do some talking.
Nevertheless... we beat Eastern Kentucky. Wooooooooo!!!!
Something I took great pleasure in during the game is the announcer's propensity to state that UNCW is the #7 ranked Mid Major in the country. That highlights a long season for us in terms of having that target on our backs.
Don't matta tho!!! Let's go Seahawks!!!!!

At least once I remember the announcer left off the "mid-major" part of it, and just said "# 7 team in the country". He was like our hype man, it was great.

RE: Game 1 - @Eastern Kentucky
EKU beat a good team in Marshall (5-2, # 78 RPI) on Saturday. In 12 days they'll be visiting Louisville (7-1, # 14).
The Colonels are 0-3 against Top 50 competition but have no bad losses.
