RE: Top 10 Conference USA Basketball Guard Duos
Quote:In Marshall’s exhibition win Sunday the pair combined for 44 points and 11 assists.
Not to nit pick and I'm not but Sunday Browning and Elmore put in 54 of the 100 points. Browning had 31 and Elmore had 23. On the 3rd vs WV State they had 33 of the 93 points, with Elmore scoring 20 and Browning with 13. In two games they have 9 assists each and have only combined for 4 fouls.
There are some excellent guard combos in CUSA and honestly don't know if I could rank Browning and Elmore at the top, even though I have on Green and White colored glasses. I honestly think any of the top four combos you have in Marshall, WKU, UTEP and UAB could probably be interchangeable. And not be wrong.
UC has a kid almost anyone in CUSA would love to have in Elliott Cole. He is a transfer from Chicago State and he went off for 32 points on Marshall. The kid was 12-24 from the field, 7-16 from 3 and 1-1 from the line.

I will put it this way as many points as they score...they will let their man score more. If you can't guard NAIA or D2 guards you can't guard CUSA guards.
They'll come along. UAB lost to UNC-Pembroke the season we beat Iowa State. I have faith in the WKU staff and the newly acquired player's skill sets.
I hope so but right now have very little confidence in their ability to play defense. It's one thing to get beat because you are getting lost in team man to man defense. Even then you have a zone on the floor to help cover.
That was not the case...the next switch or hedge or rotation defense off the ball (team defense) will be the first.
If this team learns to play defense they will compete for a conference championship...if not .500
Last years team was awful on defense to start the year. Some of it was effort but most were players just getting lost on team defense. We will see as the season goes on with this team.
But with three 5th year Sr's starting...defense should not have to be taught to those players. Just awful effort on dee

Interesting observations. They'll need to learn fast. Non-conference schedule has some doozies but also good opportunities.

RE: Top 10 Conference USA Basketball Guard Duos
Let me repeat the praise of some of the others and say I appreciate all your hard work and articles. That said, you don't have the right Rice duo of guards.
The Owls are stacked at the guard spot with redshirt freshman Chad Lott and true freshman Ako Adams (they combined for 17 points in the exhibition game the other night).
But Rice's 1-2 guard combo are the two Marcuses - Marcus Evans and a once again healthy Marcus Jackson. Remember, Jackson was preseason first-team all-conference last year before he got hurt in the exhibition game last year and was lost for the season (he averaged 14.5 points a game his sophomore year two years ago and was like 16 or 17 points a game in conference play). They combined for 36 points and eight assists in the exhibition game on Saturday.
With all the guards, Koulechov definitely becomes a small forward this year. He'll still shoot plenty of outside shots, but he's just as comfortable driving to the basket for a lay-up. And he'll either be our #1 or 2 rebounder this year.
I'm not sure you have to change the rankings but I'd definitely think the combo for Rice is Evans and Jackson.

Wow! Fantastic input. EK moving to more of a forward role makes total sense. Any word as to why MLE didn't play in the exhibition?

Supposedly he had a minor injury but is fine and should play in the season opener Sunday at James Madison.

I'll be watching. I have high expectations for this team this season.

true that - I was wondering where Evans was. He is one of my most feared opposition players. Totally owned us in Norfolk last year.
