RE: TAMU - Corpus (DI) & TAMU - Kingsville DII) looking to merge
That must be a lonely existence. I've driven by TAMUG, which by the way is technically just an extension of Texas A&M's main campus and there's nothing else on that island but a gas station and a public park.

RE: TAMU - Corpus (DI) & TAMU - Kingsville DII) looking to merge
Posted on another board...
Quote:TAMUK/A&I Alum here.
Well, this news has taken the whole region and alumni bases by surprise and at first to most of us on the TAMUK side, it looked like it might be a major loss to TAMUK. However it looks like it could be a major win for the region if the A&M BOR plays it's cards right and pacifies the Corpus folks. But as related to football and other sports, this is what is being tossed around.
* School would be renamed Texas A&M- South Texas
* The Mascot and other related things like fight songs would be the Javelinas, Jalisco, etc ( I know ACU and Sammy recall it )
* A new $60 million stadium would be built in Kingsville.
* A now semi vacant baseball stadium sits at the Regional Fairgrounds in Robstown would be bought and used by the new school. It sits around 5000 people.
* I have to think basketball, tennis, soccer and maybe volleyball might be retained in Corpus since they have better facilities. Kingsville would have to build new ones due to age. I think some new sports will be added to the offerings to like swimming.
All of this is fluid and could change and some politicos are not happy in Corpus, but some movers and shakers in the business community are and they might get on board and the politicos to follow.
We have a program on the rebound and excellent coach in place in Wikerson that I could see moving up to FCS if our upward trend continues as is in D2. This move would almost insure he'd stay for the longer term and with his enthusiasm and with new facilities in his portfolio and $$$, he would get us competitive real quick in the Southland if that is the conference option we ultimately look at. Plus I'd love to renew old rivalries and start new ones with the likes of McNeese for one.

Why would Corpus people be unhappy with this?? Sounds like they get to keep all the sports that Corpus already has now. Plus DI football in Kingsville, "only" 40 mi away. You didn't have any football before, now you have football.
Assuming both campuses would be used as well, like in UTRGV.
Would be good to get FCS football at UTRGV, too. Assuming football would be FCS level at TAMST.

Similar to this, I wonder if the state officials out in Oregon have considered merging Portland State with the Oregon Institute of Technology. OIT is a small campus located in Klamath Falls, Oregon (think south-central Oregon). Portland State is located in the bustling metropolis of Portland, Oregon. Merging these two campuses would locate OIT in a metropolis that it needs to be in, and Portland State would get a major rebranding for academic & athletic programs.

they probably should, but Oregon just recently disbanded the Oregon University System Board of Trustees and allowed all of the 7 members to set up their own BOTs and in 2012 OIT consolidated their 4 campuses in the Portland area into one and the other residential campus is still the main one
so more than likely if they were going to make that move the time to do so would have been in 2012 merging the 4 Portland area parts onto the Portland State campus or in 2015 putting Portland State and Oregon Tech under the same BOT
I suppose they could do something in the future, but probably not for a while until they figure out that things might get worse with the new 7 BOT set up

I have been to Klamath Falls before, and is a pretty city in the backgrounds of the mountains. Oregon Tech would be best served if they added football back, and move up to D2 from NAIA. It is not a small city at all.

I wasn't saying that Klamath Falls is small, (it's about the same size as Dothan, AL, IMO), but rather the OIT campus is rather small.

A merger between TAMU-Corpus and TAMA-Kingsville will not happen any time soon, according to the TAMU Chancellor and reported by http://www.theeagle.com . Too many factions on each side that are too distrustful of the other.

Distrust is the obstacle?
So you're saying both sides want to merge, but they don't trust each other? I doubt that's the case. More likely, each side wants to dominate the merger and merely "close down" the other side.

The town has a McDonald's and Wal-Mart, big enough for Division 1. /david

That is not small. 1000 population is small. Russellville is like a little over 30,000, plus the surrounding cities within range makes up close to 100,000.

A&M-Corpus campus is located on the island if I remember correctly, and with the hurricane hitting I'm wondering how much damage the campus and the rest of the area gets from this storm. Depending on how much damage occurs I wouldn't be surprised at all if this conversation of a merger is brought back up.

Corpus wasn't hit that hard. Harvey made landfall north of Corpus (and the campus is on the south side).
