Texas State @ Appalachian State Pre -Game
I'll start because I have a huge burr Up my arse with Coach Withers...
In his comments about the interim UNC HC position he mentioned he had to settle for a scholarship to App. To my knowledge he has never proudly discussed his experience at Appalachian. Well Coach, did you have to settle for the job at TXST????

I must confess I know nothing about Texas State except the name of the mascot. Would you Texas folks fill us in?

Yeah. Play out of your minds this week and if you lose out the rest of the year we won't think badly of you.

My sentiments exactly. Knew Everette when he played at App and he was a good kid. Evidently since leaving Boone he got a little too big for his britches. This isn't aimed at Tex St fans, but I hope we beat them by 50.

Texas State usually sneaks up on someone every year. It won't be App State.

Don't have any extra animosity towards Withers. All I know Texas St was a FCS team and moved up around same time as APP and GaSo, but didn't have the FCS success like the other two so not sure why the program made the jump with accomplishing so little. I foresee another TD shutout by the D. Thinking 34-3 ASU. Go Apps!!!

We moved up 2 years before you did. Having success in FCS is not a prerequisite to make the move. How else could there be start ups in FBS if there was some kind of football litmus test? It's what's in the package, not just the bow.

The move was made because the students and alums demanded it. They voted and dragged the AD kicking and screaming the whole way. Jim Wacker had originally wanted to get it going but got nowhere. That 2005 run fueled the flames but good old Larry made horrendous hires after Bailiff left so good to decent teams got hung out to dry.

Enter Fran, who left a disaster in his wake. Withers has quite the road to travel to get us back to decent. We knew this year would be ugly. We just didn't know how ugly.

They already did that against Ohio.

I've never understood the have to be successful in FCS before you move up mentality. The two have zero to do with one another.

While at UNC in the midst of their ongoing scandal, he publicly took a shot at NC State academics.

“They need to know it academically. If you look at our graduation rates, as opposed to our opponent’s this week, graduation rates for athletics, for football, you’ll see a difference. … If you look at the educational environment here, I think you’ll see a difference.”

Not sure how he could say all that without laughing.

If a program can't be successful in FCS, why would 1 think it would be in FBS ...
Last time i checked, you play to win the game, no matter what division you are. It has a good bit to do with one another.

UNCC did it with the only claim from a greedy conference that it was located in Charlotte.........

And how's that moving up without being successful in FCS working out?

It's not a prerequisite but it sure as hell helps.

Well... Since being full FBS members we've had 1 losing season out of 3. No idea how many we had when we were FCS or even lower but I'd Imagine it was a lot more than 33%.

So technically we're doing better as FBS lol

South Florida barely had a .500 record in 1-AA before moving to the Big East. UConn was never a factor in 1-AA before joining the Big East. Neither were UTSA, GA St and Coastal hasn't been what you'd call a FCS juggernaut. Then you UNCC as a start up. It's not a prerequisite for making the jump.

RE: Texas State @ Appalachian State Pre -Game
Startups don't have to be successful in FCS before moving up. But if you've been around 100 years, you're gonna need some successful years at the lower levels, otherwise you'll carry your program's reputation and non-winning tradition with you.

Big market startups always play the "we've been around for five years and just beat your program that's been around for one hundred years" as soon as they beat anyone relevant, as if they did something special. Then they hit the same walls everyone else has and wonder where all the momentum went. In anything in life, constant progress is an illusion. You make 80 to 90% of your progress in your first few years. You spend the rest of your life getting that last 10%. But fans of startups believe they will continue to improve at the same rate.

Big market startups have distinct advantages the rest of us don't have. The biggest ones being a fresh reputation, some entry level ball clubs to beat up on and build a culture of winning, and recruits who want to be a part of something big. This can lead to success much faster than Liberty or Jacksonville State can get to FBS football. But because they are so young, they tend to fizzle out after their initial success without the support and tradition of much older ball clubs. FAU, FIU, and USF are great examples, though USF is back on the rise. It's not the from "nothing to something" miracle it's made out to be.

Withers certainly thinks very highly of himself.

It's a given that App will put up 500+ yards and can name the score.

UTSA was never really FCS. They were a start up that had to be classified as FCS but they weren't in a conference. Their 2nd year, as an FCS transitional, they were in the WAC and played an FBS schedule. The WAC teams were granted the use of UTSA as a counter towards Bowl games (2nd FCS). They played 2 D2s that year also, because I don't think they had planned on getting a conference so soon. They were hell bent on going FBS and the WAC opened up.
