Now on to make a small comparison of the 1st half play for the Monarchs and Trojans compared to the Duke game. Duke played VA State on Sat Oct 29.
*Just a footnote - Duke has been selected as the preseason #1 team in the Country in the AP Poll. The Blue Devils had a slow start the 1st half Saturday. Duke was much more effective with their offense in the 2nd half.
The Monarchs defense was effective the 1st half. The scoring was intermittent with a few really nice plays in the first 20 minuets. The Duke score on Saturday at the half was 42-27. I believe we were up like 20 points at that point (34 -14? ).
Eight (8) Monarchs scored in the first half, while ODU held VSU to 17.9% (5-28) shooting from the floor. When the second half started ODU turned it on offensively. ODU was all over Virginia State at the under-16 media timeout, as the Monarchs lead 44-17 with 15:46 to play. 25 minutes into the contest, Old Dominion's defense held Virginia State to just 17 points. With under 10 min to go in the 2nd half the score was 54-17 (10:54 remaining in regulation).
Great crowd and very rowdy student turnout at the Ted. ODU defeats VSU behind 16 points from Talley. I think this team has good chemistry. Looking forward to the 2016-17 year.
Info and Comparison for VA State Duke Game Saturday.
Duke (Pre-season #1)vs VA State (The defending CIAA Champions). They have been predicted to sweep the CIAA again. The Trojans 24-6 and 14-2 advanced to the 2nd round of the Division II NCAA - NC Tournament. Where they lost to West Liberty.
All 10 players on the VA State team played 10 min or more

Old Dominion Hail
I watched this entire game from start to finish as will I with tonight's.
Couple of thoughts:
-Zoran Talley was really good last season. He's certified great now. What a talent.
-Despite the Monarchs hitting some 3's there's no real conistent threat from behind the arc on this team. It's going to be an issue unless Baker and B.J. Stith consistently start hitting.
-Brandan Stith is a beast. Top 4 power forward in CUSA possibly.
-As you mentioned VSU is no walk over. They are a very capable team. ODU's defense is relentless. I expected it and was still surprised how good it is.
-Length. Taylor, Talley, Stith, Stith, Porter, and so on. Goodness.

Yeah, that's a good assessment. We might lead the nation in many D categories this year but our O will be streaky. I think the other variable you didn't mention is Caver. If he can slow down just a notch I think we could see consistent scoring out of him. And Pinckney, the transfer, looked like he had a promising shot. But yeah, first to 50 wins against us, if either team can actually score 50.

Good points on Caver and Pinckney. I know it's hard to look to next season but I give Jeff a ton of credit for locking up some highly recruited shooters.

USM lost 3 CUSA games in OT last year, but did manage to beat ODU, UTEP, and a few others. This Southern Miss team should end up being a little better than what was on the court last year, but the 2025-2026 team is shaping up to be phenomenal.

The 108-106 Marshall win ended in an OT buzzer beater. Was one of the most nerve racking games from last year. Marshall was down 54-37 at the half and scored 61 in the 2nd and held USM to 44 to send that game to OT.

James Kelly tied the score up with :04 on the clock to send it to OT.

Kourtlin Jackson was a grown azz man for USM all season
I would like to know how many games we lost in the Eustachy, Tyndall, and Sadler years by allowing a three point shooter to tie the game to put it into overtime, and then lose. I think we lost twice in one year to UAB by not fouling the man with the ball before he shot.
