That argument would make sense if not for the fact that France, Germany, Italy and Spain have won WC in my lifetime. I don't think the majority of their players are coming from poverty and desperation

Besides, soccer has got to be the cheapest major organized sport to play. The interest in general, just doesn't exist. Nor would we ID kids from an early age and put them soccer camps for a decade.

All of those countries have systems where talent from diverse circumstances can get elite level play and good scouting for very little money. Here you won't even be evaluated if you're not on an expensive travel team.

So while it is cheap to play at a certain level, it is expensive to play seriously.
