Suspended for half a game Anthony Wales

ODU Kesean Strong and Rob Thompson and WKU Nicholas Norris and Kylen Towner have been reprimanded.

Jamshyer McUmber ejected still stands. If this isnt overturned does he have to sit out the first half of the following game?

CUSA officials admitted he was wrongfully ejected. Harry mentions it in this article...

RE: UTEP Game
On paper we should win this. However, it is a long trip and they are at home.

On defense UTEP runs a 4-2-5. It is imperative that we establish our running game so that our passing game be opened up. On paper we should be able to move on them in the air and on the ground, assuming our Oline is back to full strength.

I think that UMass saw something in our defense. Their RB, Marquis Young, normally a 4.5 yds/carry rusher ran for 163 yards @7.4 yds/carry against us. The UMass OL pushed our Dline more than I would have expected, and far better than their season averages

The WKU RB, had a similar performance against us with 157 yards @10. yds/carry with Quinton baker adding 68 more, well above their average.

The UTEP running game is similar to that of WKU.

The UTEP passing game is average at best, and they use two QBs, IMHO Ryan Metz being the better of the two.

Our defensive line has been pushed around for the last two games. I hope that trend doesn't continue.

That's the same 4-2-5 defense we have been playing too!!! Got to put 7 to 8 in the box to stuff the run attack.

RE: UTEP Game
The 4-2-5 is just a nickel. It's not that foreign or exotic everyone has a version of it, and it's based on the offensive personnel. If they have 2 RB or 2 TE we (and almost everyone else who uses a 4 man front) goes back to a 4-3. It's just most offenses now run a majority of 3 wide pkgs. Umass gashed us early with draws and delays; DL got too far up field and got burned. The second half the DL adjusted and that didn't happen. WKU just overmatched us, we got blown off the ball plain and simple.

The 4-2-5 is indeed a nickel, being very versatile with respect to cover shells, especially against spreads.

However, the second part of your post is just not true. In the second half, Young ran at will, with the exceptions of a 10 yard loss on a busted play, and one stop. His runs in the 2nd half were as follows.

The UMass OLine was still opening holes.
Had UMass had a more skillful and experienced QB, we could have been in a very close game.

As for WKU, yes indeed they blew us off the ball, but they shouldn't have. While they have a very prolific passing attack, they are normally a 4.8 yards per game rushing team. They almost doubled that against us. RB Wales averaged 10.5 yds/carry.

Yes, young ran for 48 yds in the 2nd half. ...after running for 105 in the 1st. It's not ideal but that's a good adjustment.

UTEP's base D is a 3-4 by the way. Which could cause pass protection problems, Umas's 3-4 hit DW all night.

Yes, I see now that UTEP went to a 3-4 this year. Are they primarily one gap or two?
The 3-4 is traditionally better vs the run than the pass, and a lot depends on whether it is primarily a 1 gap or 2. Of all defenses, the 3-4 requires certain specific traits and athletic abilities, specifically at NT and LB. The UTEP defense has been nothing less than an abject disaster this year. After some research it is my opinion that the Miners don't have the linebackers to pull it off.

As for UMass, there was absolutely no adjustment on our part.
Umass was behind and went to the pass. Young only ran 8 times in the 2nd half; 14 in the 1st. UMass only ran 10 times in the 2nd half, the last two by subs; after running 24 times in the first half.

I have a feeling that we'll win in a closely-contested game that exhibits a few of our strengths and most of our weaknesses

Care to elaborate on your prediction as it relates to the way they have performed in ALL of their games vs the way we have performed in ALL of our games?

RE: UTEP Game
UTEP may have the worst defense we have faced except for UNCC

However, I said prior to the UMass game that I was concerned about our run defense. UMass and WKU ran much too well considering that our DLine is the strength of the defense, and yes the linebackers are culpable as well.

UTEP's Aaron Jones runs much better than UMass' Young.
Additionally UTEP protects the ball better when passing. Although not particularly special Ryan Metz is a decent QB

Given the long trip for us and it being a UTEP home game, this one may be closer than many expect.

ODU 49 UTEP 31

RE: UTEP Game
Take away the 24 overtime points and UTEP scored 28 during the regulation four quarters against UTSA. Over the last six games (since winning their opener against two-win New Mexico State), and using the 28 points against the Runners, the Miners have averaged 16.67 points per game, including three games when they scored only seven points.

I see this game closely resembling our wins against Charlotte or UMASS. UTEP is last in the conference in rushing defense at 208 yards per game and also last in the conference in scoring defense allowing 39 points per game. I am confident that the Monarchs have put the Western Kentucky fiasco behind them and will win this one going away.

ODU 35 UTEP 17

Just think....beating UTEP sets up Nov. 5th matchup against Marshall as a potential game to win and secure a Bowl birth !! That would be huge !!

Huge game. A win puts us one win away from a bowl with 3 out of our final 4 games at home. Gotta like our chances.

A loss, well then the pressure mounts. Let's take care of business and show that we are the firm fifth best team in CUSA.

78 ran into #74 A.J. Addison's family at a local sports bar. He plays for Marshall and spent some time at Fork Union. Should be an interesting game there family will be in Section 118. I think we could win this game. His family even thinks it will be a tough game for them.

At home, I fully believe we will handle Marshall this year.

Listen to Harry Mininum's podcast. He outlines several legitimate reasons as to why ODU couldlose. I feel like its possible, unless they were scared of WKU...

There is no way we will give up 55 points to them. We may lose, but we aren't giving up that many points.

The team can't look past anyone, but man, if we can beat the Miners that Marshall game in Norfolk will be CRAZY exciting. Can you imagine finally having a chance against them AND it being for a bowl bid?!? Thats goalpost removal worthy. Gotta win this weekend first!
