Had the Big 12 expanded with Cincinnati, BYU, Houston, and one of the U_Fs, it could have called itself the Big 8 as it would have been in exactly 8 states.

From Wikipedia and the B1G web site:

"On February 8, 1896, one faculty member from each of those seven universities met at the same Palmer House and officially established the mechanics of the conference, which was officially incorporated as the “Intercollegiate Conference Athletic Association” in 1905."

Talk about a generic name, that one is awful.

Keep in mind this was the very first official conference and there was no NCAA at the time. The conference actually formed in 1896 (at least scheduled games and standing did then). In a lot of ways, this was a mini-NCAA with just a handful of schools agreeing to centralized rules and a scheduling agreement. In that light, the name makes more sense.

Practically though, the conference was called The Western Conference originally. The name might sound odd today, but makes sense in light of a) the Great Lake states were called the West for a long time and only slowly became the Middle West (as opposed to Far West) and finally Midwest, and b) the original football powers were the eastern schools, mainly in what we now call the Ivy League.

The name Big Ten (Big Nine in the years after Chicago left) developed over time and eventually became the primary name.

Edit: The only name change I would even consider as acceptable would be to go back to The Western Conference which people would laugh even more about given we now have teams in New Jersey and Maryland.

Bogg #20,

Well, we could just go by basic geographic names. The SEC is the closest, and formally the SoCon.

Big Ten could be "The Northern Conference".
ACC could be "The Atlantic Conference".
PAC could be "The Pacific Conference".

It'd be like division names for a future NFL type structure.

I like to call it "The Big N" because Big Ten schools usually have great math departments.

SEC could be "The Southern Conference"

B12 could be "The Mountain Conference" -- but that would conflict with the Mountain West. "The Rocky Conference"? Balboa could be the sponsor.

RE: Rename the Big Ten and Big 12
Seriously the Big 10 should have simply called themselves the Big 10 +. Then it would not matter how many were added. Conversely the Big 12 should have simply become the Big 12 -. That way it would not matter how many they lose. Both new names would stay accurate for the duration of both conferences.

The core of the SEC was part of the Southern Conference at one time. The problem is that it's too difficult and not very impactful to chant Southern Conference three times.
