Hurricane Matthew
Anybody else flood out?

We ended up with 4" of water in the house over here in Kempsville/Acredale. Thankfully we saw the inevitable and were able to move some furniture, picture albums, desktop etc that had been low up to the second floor. All the flooring and some furniture will be lost. No more helpless feeling than watching water rise like that. in 14 years here, it's never been higher than 1/4 of what it was Saturday.

Ins is supposed to be out today, but I have low hopes of them being helpful. Took today off to tear out the carpet and try and clear out the garage.

Regardless, no one was hurt, no trees on the house and the cars all were spared, so it'll all be fine in the end.

No one? My name is Grommet, and I am a statistical anomaly.

Got the carpet and flooring out. Have yet to tackle the garage.

Sorry to hear that grommet. We live in Colonial Place. Had some slight leakage through the chimney that I fixed yesterday with some caulk and flashing. But thanks to the lift of our first floor, we ended up on an island surrounded by water and only got water in the crawl. Flooding is pretty normal in CPRV, so we have a sump pump and a dehumidifier.

Hey, there's some luck! Good for you all that there wasn't much to repair!

This was very unusual for over here in K'ville. We're on a slab, so no crawl. From my backyard, through the house, across the cul-de-sac, around the corner etc etc was all one lake. We spent a good chunk of the day yesterday sucking water out of the carpet to make it easier to tear out today. It was already mildewing. Tear-out went pretty quickly. The tougher part (mentally) was the flooring as I did that myself. Went over to help the in-laws today and never got to the garage...hopefully tomorrow after a short day at work.

I've seen Ashville Park in VB is still under water, as are other parts of K'ville and King's Grant was cut off when the only road in/out was washed out by the storm.

Got a moisture meter and tested the drywall. Now I'm ripping out drywall and insulation to 16" throughout the entire first floor.

Carpeting, wood flooring, baseboard & moulding, drywall, insulation, doors & casings, painting/wainscoting/paneling, leather sleeper sofa and countless personal possessions...

No flood insurance here (no flood zone and no reason to ever think there'd be a problem) and other insurance(s) denied. Waiting to see what's going on with FEMA.

Did you report your damage to the city?

Follow-up:

Filed with FEMA after that was approved on a Thursday, had an inspector out the next Tuesday, had money to help repair the damage wired into my account that Wednesday. Not enough to hire someone to do it outright, so I'm doing what I can after work, etc.

Hurricane Mathew was way worse than forecasted. 10+ inches of rain and 70+ MPH gusts.

Sorry to hear they didn't supply you with enough to cover the expense, but not surprising either. Hope the repairs go smoothly.04-cheers
